It definitely seems more like a reflexive response that may be linked to eating. If it has gills, it definitely doesn't breathe through its mouth at all but it does cover its prey like it's gripping the hand.
@BRO-chet Well, they DO intake through their mouths. They can still breathe while the gills are wet. I can't remember but I think the air is too much O2 and it's not good for them, and then as their gills start to dry they suffocate.
@@ltlredhen4177 I'm just making an educated guess, I don't actually know for sure. It only *appears* to be a predatory reflex to me. There's definitely more that I don't know about these animals than I do.
@@teck1756 let's just settle the argument by stating that like humans, the require oxygen to live, however when we as humans breathe, we filter oxygen out from nitrogen, carbon, and many other gasses, whereas sea creatures, filter oxygen out from mostly hydrogen (obviously there are other elements due to pollution in both cases, but the point is the same). water, though it is dense, actually has more oxygen at ~84% compared to 'air' which has 21%. many consider oxygen to be air, and ignore other elements which is where the miscommunication can occur. if this comes up as false information, a quick search on google will validate my words. Sorry for the long paragraph, i just love science-esc topics
@@some_kiddd5137 Doesn't matter. "Air" implies "gas." Humans inhale gas. Fish filter liquid. I am not incorrect in saying that fish do no breathe air. Someone who claims fish do breathe air, though, is completely incorrect.
The gills (or whatever is inside of them) stick together when outside of the water, which means that the animal can’t filter out the oxygen out of the water. They still breathe air, just in a different way A simple google would’ve told you this
Projecting human emotions and behaviors onto animals is one of our species' worst features. It comes from an innocent place. But it's one of the most common causes for negative interactions with wild animals.
@@MichaelSplatkinsbasically a natural human thing to do and cannot be helped. I wouldn't call people dumb over it just ignorant and don't know any better.
It's more of an established phrase. Saying that he was gasping for water would sound weird. And they still breathe oxygen, like we do - it's just dissolved in water, and not in other gases. And I apologize if you were just joking and I just told you something you already know, lol.
fun fact: stingrays may not be ticklish, manta rays are and will sometimes go above divers so they can get tickled by the bubbles emitted from their oxygen tank. Sadly, manta rays are so big that it means the diver might get stuck under the manta ray, not being able to surface until they either chase the ray away or run out of oxygen.
Interesting enough, this is not a stingray. It actually doesn't have a stinger like you'd expect. It's called a Clearnose Skate, which has small sharp spines that run along its back and down its tail. They don't get more than about 20 lbs from my experience where rays get up to 60-200lbs depending on species and age.
@randomjunk3987 Neat to know, I'll have to pay more attention before spinning it back into the water. Actually, I wasn't fully aware of the differences between them, talking from personal experience on the water. And looking it up there's actually quite a few different kinds of Skate that I didn't know about. 🤔
It's not 'fair' at all. You arn't actualy about to suffocate and de. Do you really think this is a joke? Fishing for food is one thing, but this is just cruelty for klicks.
It's hard to tell by never seen a stingray like that that's usually skate which is a relative of this thing right. Pretty much the reason I'm saying this is because a stingray's mouth extends out and has rubbery lips to suck up Crustaceans out of the ground.
He never explained why it curls up though. The answer he gave doesn't really seem like it relates to its reaction to being touched. It was already suffocating before it was even touched.
It’s not just gasping for air. Because it would be writing in such a manner before being touched. It’s having a sensory overload. The underneath of a stingray is where it’s highly sensitive skin is; it’s ampullae of Lorinzini. It’s so sensitive it can detect electrical impulses from the small movements of small crustaceans and such while the stingray is sifting through the sand looking for prey. The stingrays underside is much the same as the tip of a shark’s nose.
@ec157 this is exactly it. It's not a sting ray, it's a sea skate and this one is trying to bite its perceived predator touching it. They will give you a few stitches if it latches on.
@@SerangelROM thank you, finally someone! This whole thread has it just about all figured out. I know the guy in the video does a lot of research but he really botched the accuracy of this one. Good work guys, minus you sniiper.
If the mouth opening is gasping for air why does it happen only when their touched? It's obviously a defense mechanism to something touching their underside. When you live on the bottom of the ocean it has to be quite alarming having something touch your belly.
stingrays are genuinely one of the sweetest animals in the sea, I was at discovery cove in florida a few years ago and there was a pool where you could swim with a bunch of exotic sea life, one of them being stingrays there was one stingray at the corner of the pool that looked lonely, so I waited there with him, petting him, when I had to go back to the hotel I was staying at the stingray followed me out of the pool, I had no idea stingrays could form a bond like that and it made me appreciate them a whole lot more
@@arstulex steve irwin and his family knew that it was a freak accident, there's only been around 20 recorded human deaths caused by stingrays and considering that the irwins have an entire wildlife sanctuary I'm sure that they've forgiven the stingrays
People who are mocking him for saying “gasping for air” should learn how gills work. The short version is that they suck in water into the gills, the oxygen goes through to blood vessels inside then the rest of the hydrogen and water comes out of the gills. That’s super simplified and not entirely accurate but for the purpose of this post, it’s good enough. They literally do BREATHE air but they just get it a different way. Same way how someone with a cannula breathing tube would breathe differently from someone with perfectly functioning lungs or someone with a trachea breathing tube breathes from the middle of their throat instead of through the nose or mouth. All living creatures need some sort of oxygen whether that be by way of carbon dioxide or water or “air” which is a mixture of gases. We use “air” and oxygen interchangeably but the correct thing to say is that aquatic animals cannot breathe oxygen via air and need to get it through the water passing through their gills. Either way, the poor ray is suffocating and cannot breathe.
No, we breathe air to get oxygen and fish breathe water to get oxygen. There are other things in air other then oxygen that our body exhalez back out just like there are other things in water besides oxygen that the fish also doesn't keep other then the oxygen.
unless its been out for an absurd ammount of time its fine. They can live an hr or more out of water which clearly its not been out that long. This would do nothing to them as long as you get them back in the water in a decent time frame.
Air and oxygen are not synonymous. Air is a mixture of gasses in our atmosphere. There is oxygen in both air and water. Humans breathe air, fish breathe water.
Yes, stingrays can be ticklish. When tickled, stingrays may curl up their wings, open their mouths, and form a shape that resembles a human smile. Some say that this reaction indicates that the stingray is having fun, while others say it's actually a sign of suffocation. just look it up
As a vet tech, it's amazing the amount of cute animal videos people watch are actually abusive or an animal in distress. Animals don't smile, and if they do it's usually a distress signal or warning 99% of the time.

Breathe O3, pure oxygen and see how long you live.
@@some_kiddd5137 Doesn't matter. "Air" implies "gas." Humans inhale gas. Fish filter liquid. I am not incorrect in saying that fish do no breathe air. Someone who claims fish do breathe air, though, is completely incorrect.

“The stingray is gasping for air”💀🤣
They still breathe oxygen but they can't get it outside of water, so technically both are true.
I said the same thing. In fact it was gasping air.😅
The gills (or whatever is inside of them) stick together when outside of the water, which means that the animal can’t filter out the oxygen out of the water. They still breathe air, just in a different way

“Stingrays can’t breathe air”
“This stingray is suffocating gasping for air”
They breathe air through gills. Their gills need to be covered in water or have water in their gills to do the air process
Science 🍷🗿
It's more of an established phrase. Saying that he was gasping for water would sound weird. And they still breathe oxygen, like we do - it's just dissolved in water, and not in other gases.
And I apologize if you were just joking and I just told you something you already know, lol.
"Oh ho ho, eh eh eh" ☠️☠️
Bro really was “Laughing to Death”
fun fact: stingrays may not be ticklish, manta rays are and will sometimes go above divers so they can get tickled by the bubbles emitted from their oxygen tank. Sadly, manta rays are so big that it means the diver might get stuck under the manta ray, not being able to surface until they either chase the ray away or run out of oxygen.
Then the diver will be gaspin for air; “eh eh eh.”
The diagram he pulls up looks like a clearnose skate but the animal in the video is a Little Skate

It's hard to tell by never seen a stingray like that that's usually skate which is a relative of this thing right. Pretty much the reason I'm saying this is because a stingray's mouth extends out and has rubbery lips to suck up Crustaceans out of the ground.

I wouldn’t say sensory overload since their underbelly is tough enough to take on full strength pinch’s from crabs and still be intact
@@sniiiper3d645Did you even read the comment you were replying to? Being tough doesn't mean it's not sensitive.
I’m also thinking that the stingray opens its mouth and curls itself in to bite whatever it is or catch them with their barb.
@ec157 this is exactly it. It's not a sting ray, it's a sea skate and this one is trying to bite its perceived predator touching it. They will give you a few stitches if it latches on.

If the mouth opening is gasping for air why does it happen only when their touched? It's obviously a defense mechanism to something touching their underside. When you live on the bottom of the ocean it has to be quite alarming having something touch your belly.
Funnily enough, tickling a stingray has never been on my to do list
stingrays are genuinely one of the sweetest animals in the sea, I was at discovery cove in florida a few years ago and there was a pool where you could swim with a bunch of exotic sea life, one of them being stingrays
there was one stingray at the corner of the pool that looked lonely, so I waited there with him, petting him, when I had to go back to the hotel I was staying at the stingray followed me out of the pool, I had no idea stingrays could form a bond like that and it made me appreciate them a whole lot more
I wonder if Steve Irwin's family feel the same way.
It’s very stressful petting those animals at Sea World and Discovery Cove. They get stressed out and they can get sick from our germs.
@@The13thGoddessAries that little guy literally followed me out of the pool idk why else it would do that

The stingray is gasping for water bro… not air, water has oxygen which they filter, and our air has oxygen which we inhale among loads of other gases
unless its been out for an absurd ammount of time its fine. They can live an hr or more out of water which clearly its not been out that long. This would do nothing to them as long as you get them back in the water in a decent time frame.
They ABSOLUTELY, LITERALLY DON'T BREATHE AIR. OXYGEN=/=AIR
