The Straight Line and the Curve - A First Grade Form Drawing

- This is a form drawing lesson often done on the first day of first grade in a Waldorf School. In this education we often say "writing before reading" and this is the very beginning of writing, drawing being an artistic way to approach handwriting. Looking at the world you will see that everything has straight lines and curves, and all the combinations in between. After we have practiced many variations on this theme, making beautiful careful pictures, then we will be ready to introduce writing, and it will be an artistic expression instead of a chore. I hope you enjoy this video and subscribe to my channel to receive new lessons. Thanks for watching!
Love all of your videos! I’m going to share this with all my homeschool friends! What a wonderful resource!
Thank you! I appreciate your support!
Thanks for your great sharing! Do you have any suggestions or videos guide children which learnt by their body the form drawing before drawing in the paper? Much hope your feedback.
I will see about making some videos with exercises to do before drawing g. Thank you for the suggestion!
This was a great video! Thank you!
Thank you Ivan! It was fun to make.
Hi, can you tell me what crayons you recommend for first grade please? Loving your videos, I’m home educating my two children and I’m so happy to have found these so thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience 😊
Hi. The crayons I use are Stockmar beeswax crayons, you can buy them on Art Makes Sense the US Mercurius store. Filana are also a good brand that is even more natural than the Stockmar ones. Hope this helps. Hope your homeschooling journey is going well!
Is there any particular reason why you used blue for the straight line and red for the curved one? I also feel that blue is right for the straight line, for it inspires calm and stillness, while red suits the curved line for its movement and liveness. Thank you so much for your video!
I have often seen blue for straight lines and red for ones with more movement so I agree with how you put it, that blue is calming and red more active. Happy drawing!
@@RippleWaldorf Thank you! Hope you have beautiful days!
i love your videos... for first grade, is colored pencil preferred over crayons?
Hi. Usually crayons are used in first grade. I just used pencils as it was lockdown and that is what I had. Thanks for liking my videos!
you are so great that I want you to be my teacher who teaches me how to teach!
So glad you are finding my videos helpful! I am just starting to offer mentoring and would be happy to work with you if you are interested. You can find me on Patreon www.patreon.com/RippleWaldorf?fan_landing=true
This is great but I have a hard time imagining my children staying focused while doing this any advice?
It depends how old the children are. You can also practice the same video or form once a day for a week. Children love repetition, especially in this fast paced world we live in.
I find doing it with them and guiding them or showing them keeps them really focused and they enjoy it more
Do you tell any stories about straight line and curve to children when teach them these form?
Hello. Often the first lesson of first grade is the introduction of the straight line and the curve. The children find things around the classroom and out in nature and discover that everything is made up of the two, either in combination or individually. It can be brought in a story but is not necessary. Hope this is helpful.
Thankyou

Hi. So glad you are finding my videos useful on your homeschooling journey. I’m using Stockmar block and stick crayons. Filana is another company that makes crayons I like to use. 🙂
