The hunted suits aren't meant to look good at all. They are supposed to be worn down versions of the Sons of Garmadon suits. Like the "scales" on kai's armor is supposed to be the chainmail inside of his suit.
I differ on a lot of these, but Nia certainly had bad suits to start out, because they just kinda made up the water ninja thing after she was several seasons into backing her brother by wearing red, so they tried to just add blue, but Jay was already in blue, so they went lighter, and it just wasn't really working for her, and the designers didn't have forever to figure it out before it was time to apply the design to the digital characters, not to mention the Minifigures
I think the gun metal gray, (in some cases) dark blue and (in some cases) dark red works best for Nya, it differentiates her from the rest of the Ninja, and it still combines her own unique style while tying into Kai and Jay's colors as well.
