Hey. I went in this thing in 1975. And now once you are at the top, you can hear the traction motors run as the tram returns back to the bottom. The cab door in this video is not the original door. In 1966, it was declared to be a futuristic ride due to the way the capsules are shaped. Starting off, it is a rocky ride, then it goes up like a regular elevator. Then as it nears the top, some tilting action is noticed again. That is the leveling system you hear.

I grew up in Illinois. My dad was a car mechanic when he first came to the US, he would travel to St Louis every couple years to do his ASE training/certification. This was back in the late 80s/90s. He used to tell me every time he went, he would go on the tram to the top of the arch. He said it was a great view, but the ride to the top was slow/crammed/uncomfortable lol. I've been to St. Louis plenty of times but never went up the arch, would definitely like to experience that.

I remember the shape reminded me of the inside of a clothes dryer. I thought they were going to toss a giant sheet of Bounce inside before the door closed.

That was a fun elevator to get stuck in. Won't be doing that again anytime soon.

I went there back in 2000 with my church youth group from Florida for a Youth Gathering event at what was the TWA Dome and went up into the arch! Try riding in that with 4-5 other people leaned over to look out!

I never knew you could ride up there to the top until just now while watching Aerial America S1 E61 Man-Made Marvels on the Smithsonian channel. 6-12-22. Definitely on my list of places to visit!
