I grew up in St. Louis and have been to the Arch many times. I don't think people realize when they see it in pictures or videos just how massive and stunningly beautiful it is in real life.
@@Bee-lieve623 If you want to ride to the top and watch the documentary about the building of the Arch (which is fascinating) it's only $16 for adults and $11 for kids up to 15 years old. The museum is free.
I took that ride in 1974, when I was 16 years old. It was magnificent. There's nothing else like it in the world. The Gateway Arch is one of the grandest monuments in the USA. It's simultaneously classical and modern.
this is true and something to consider if someone's planning to visit. If prone to motion sickness, a visit to the arch on a windy day might not be a good thing to attempt.
On a windy day the top of the arch will sway 1in. In either direction and the elevators spin slightly to make sure you are level when you ascend and descend hence why they are small and round
the fact that someone said you can feel the building sway if its windy makes me so nauseas 😭 thank you on behalf of everyone terrified to go all the way up there
Okay, like everyone, no idea there was anything inside it. Kind of disappointed there is no slide down. (Disclaimer: I am joking, this needs no slide. Although...)
hi, stl native here, if you need cool slides from big architectural marvels, check out our city museum!! there’s around 30 of them throughout the museum, one of them spans 10 stories. super cool place!!
@@charahrah If I ever get there, I will check it out. Actually, if it's the one I'm thinking of I saw a video ages ago of it and fell in love. I may be quite jealous of it actually. Thank you so much!!!
I'm Dutch, but my English teacher in middle-school has mentioned this quite a lot ;) He had lived quite some time in America (which also showed in his English, which always had a clear accent.
I have a coworker that was a part of the United Steel Workers of America union and worked on the Arch here in Des Moines. He's in his mid-80's and retired a long time ago from working in steel manufacturing. He works part-time right now to keep himself busy, though.
When he was at the top going over the ramp, I realized that it wasn't a ramp and you were at the very top of the arch in the very thin top. It made me panic.
Hey. I went in this thing in 1975. And now once you are at the top, you can hear the traction motors run as the tram returns back to the bottom. The cab door in this video is not the original door. In 1966, it was declared to be a futuristic ride due to the way the capsules are shaped. Starting off, it is a rocky ride, then it goes up like a regular elevator. Then as it nears the top, some tilting action is noticed again. That is the leveling system you hear.
Indoor Disneyland 'Riverfront Square' was in talks during 1963-65 right as the construction for the Arch was being done and completed. Riverfront Square was spose to be 2 blocks north of the baseball stadium, right along the parks on Market St.
Now when Clark Griswold told his family on National Lampoon Vacation Movie, “there’s an elevator all the way to the top” I thought it was a joke for the movie but, I see that he was giving truth to that scene an I see there’s a claustrophobic Elevator all the way to the top. Nice video
I went here 9-10 years ago as a kid, should’ve taken pics. I hope my memories of this elevator and the view at the top never fades, it’s all I have of the arch.
This is a neat video to watch, but I could never do this in person. I'm super claustrophobic and I was getting anxiety attacks just looking at that elevator!
The doors didn't used to have those clear panels either. I'm not particularly claustrophobic, but it was pretty unsettling going up in that little pod when I was young.
The clear panels would definitely help. I’m very claustrophobic and don’t like elevators, but I seem to do better in clear ones where I can see out a little bit.
I grew up in Illinois. My dad was a car mechanic when he first came to the US, he would travel to St Louis every couple years to do his ASE training/certification. This was back in the late 80s/90s. He used to tell me every time he went, he would go on the tram to the top of the arch. He said it was a great view, but the ride to the top was slow/crammed/uncomfortable lol. I've been to St. Louis plenty of times but never went up the arch, would definitely like to experience that.
Was born and raised in St. Louis. Saw this Arch being built! My father and grandparents took me and my brothers up in it. Was so cool. It is claustrophobic though to ride up in that tiny elevator. Miss that city.

That moment at 2:30 when the camera adjusts for exposure and you see St. Louis ... made me a little nauseous haha Brought back memories I had forgotten about. A lot has changed since 1986.
The first shot from in the arch looking out to the courthouse was STUNNING! my fear of heights would prevent me from visiting, for sure, but I very much appreciated this video anyway! Oh, and the arch and the water....✔✔✔✔

Ride up not too bad. At least they had a window to look out of. I went on a holoday so it was PACKED! 5 of us crammed in there in every car. Glad it held. View was amazing!
I'm surprised at how many people didn't know you could go inside!! I was in St. Louis about 30 years ago. I could have gone up, but for some reason decided not to. Doubt I will ever be back, so thanks for the video. I got to see what I missed!!
I live in STL, and I've been up there once and only once. I'm not scared of heights, but apparently getting into a clothes dryer and then being that far up is a bit triggering.
This is so Amazing! And I had no idea it existed. I had to travel all the way to Europe to experience the "London Eye" and we have this Arch which is equally Grand right here! Even though I'm not a resident of St. Louis, it feels proud to have such a magnificent piece of architecture and Tourist attraction right here in the USA.🇺🇸
If I remember correctly: the guy who came up with the elevator dropped out of high school. When he told city leaders and those in charge of the arch's construction of the idea he had for said elevator, they were so skeptical they gave him two weeks to put his idea onto paper.
Boston-area native here, would love to check this out. I vote for a rule that if you are able to make it to the top and hold it together looking out the windows, you get to meet Ozzie Smith for an autograph when you get back down. Make it happen, St. Louis :)
It sways in the wind too. When I went the doors were not glass and there were 5 of us in that tiny egg. I was a liftle boy and I think this is how I became claustrophobic and afraid of heights.
The capsules are the same as when I went there in 1978. Then it was just plain white lights. But now they have the changing lighting. Fantastic views if it's a clear day.
I remember doing this several years ago and not only is it claustrophobic in those pods, they also sway a bit towards the top and it's really freaky but the views from the top of the Arch is worth it. The museum is also really great to visit.

That's by design, large structures need to be able to move, otherwise they will snap. That's why trees also are not static.
Yes! I felt it sway. Here in Chicago, the sears tower( now called Willis tower) sways too. The worker are used to it.
