Cost is the main reason but it's true, the covers would achieve a similar result. It still wouldn't protect the components in quite the same way though, especially from water. It'd be an interesting test to try one method against the other long term though.
They're decent. I say that because in comparison to my old Stasis Ohlins on the S4, they're obviously not as good. But for the price point of this ECS kit, it's hard to do better. I do think a slightly softer spring rate for the top end of the compression scale for these would be better but you can tune in some compliance using the damping control. And depending on the condition of the roads where you live, that tuning is either critical, or not much of a problem.
