Been boating and fishing my whole life. Definitely have been in some sketchy seas, but this has too be one of the most dangerous bar crossings! The skill required to handle these type of vessels through that is AMAZING!

Very nice looking trawler! My cousin boat one from NZ in 2017! I wonder if this boat is still going well!I saw one like this a few years ago, lying on the beach and had to be wrecked, and that was sad for me
That was grand to see-Well done Captain. --Those who enjoyed this would also enjoy reading the book " Pacific Graveyard". It's about the Columbia river bar (Oregon-Washington- USA) conceded to be one of the worst in the world.
Ah yes, I remember coming across that bar and we turned over while I was painting the deck when we came up again the paint and the brush was still in my hand. and the skipper said you missed a bit.
I worked on this boat with skipper and owner Horny, Ganet, and Matt Fisher. We crossed the bar in these conditions usual taking or gumboots of so we wouldn't sink if we went over. I was surprised to learn 25 years later she ended up on Cobden beach with Matt and Hornblower still working on her.
These boats are similar build to a Snibby. They use to fish out in the North Sea.Very well build and they can take the weather.I think Snibby's are original a Scandinavian design vessel.I used to work on a pilot boat ex snibby we had a strong Gardner engine. She came from Scotland where she was build.
Shit happens..As a Cornish fisherman,I've been in bad situations..I was in the tuna war, when the Spanish attacked Newlyn boats. The Spanish were piss poor lol .
Great footage. Hey *+Nugget hunter* do you know the histories of the Cobden and Blaketown tipheads? I'd love to know just how they were engineered and built. Thanks for the upload.
i don't know a lot of the history but i think they were built for loading coal onto the ships in the earlier year,i think a railway line was put down to cart the rock out to build the road out there and then the wharves built alongside, all thats left of a lot of the wharves these day's are the piles. cheers.
Sad thing to see this fine vessel Kutere, now aground on Cobden beach, Greymouth. Very good to know the crew are safe and well. Surely she could be pulled off with a tug at high tide. Yesterday, Monday 29th May 2017.
I get my butt kicked just like that in my 42-foot Brisk about ten to fifteen times a summer crossing the middle tide rip in Cook Inlet. I have been crossing cook Inlet tendering salmon 56 years.
He was about 20 centimeters from sinking and drowning in that floating bathtub. Who designed the rail to be curved downwards in the middle like that? ^^
i don't know who designed it, but it is no longer on the sea , it run aground I have another video of the dismantling of it on the beach and loaded on a truck and taken away, never to go fishing again.
SWSimpson, that's what I thought, but people keep saying what a fabulous, great, well constructed boat it is!! To me, it looks as though it 'barely' has control....and certainly no speed!!
These boats are full displacement, and you know the formula... Flat out, maybe 9.5kn depending on her waterline length (square root of waterline in feet X 1.34 is pretty much as fast as they can go). IIRC, the current there can be over 6kn; then there's the speed of the waves in. Re. looking like it's about to sink: it wold have a draft around 2m, and will be loaded, so stable, and limited in speed by waterline length. Looked like good skippering to me. I just looked her up; she had a waterline length of about 50', so max speed of ~9.5kn.
@@pdevonport7266 Thanks. Sitting outside the bar and checking it out carefully, even a bar you know, sometimes you can't tell you what the water's really like once you're in it, and committed.
Now this is a beautiful little ship! This beauty is reminiscent of the North American Pacific halibut schooner. Wow!! What a sea boat!

That type of vessel will take a sea to the stern very well . Worked on them on and off for years
I saw no skill I saw a wave come up behind the boat and almost roll the boat over, ya don't to be washed onto the rocks,
@@jerryse81 So true, that boat was built for those conditions
Well done skipper....a relatively calm day on incoming tide....a good surf in....

Oh Just found it,sad to see the MV KUTERE being ship wrecked on the beach and destroyed!
@@malmotumotu5218 yes I took the video over 3 days of them packing it up and getting rid of it off the beach.
Brian Hunter yeah I eventually found a footage of it being destroyed after washed up on the beach. So sad,as I love the hull design of it!
Beautiful work.

Who was Greymouth and the idea to build a harbour there......
guess it was a bit different back in the sailing ship days. :)
In fact, if it doesn't rain after 5 days a drought is declared.
