We make tea from our 100 year old birds mouth cast iron kettle. Minerals collect on the inside but no rust. Trick is to empty the water then dry the kettle right away, ready for next use.
Can't see why it wouldn't; you just need to season the inside as well as the outside. I've got a similar one, works fine for coffee/tea. If you can boil water in a cast iron pan or roaster for making coffee, this is exactly the same.

inhave the same kettle and there was a tag on it when we bought it that said that it contains lead - i think this is why its not safe to drink
