    We always mowed around the outside of the field the direction of travel and came back and got the second round the opposite way. Interesting how different farmers do things.

    Growing up a neighbor who ran a dairy farm would ask for help, he had Oliver’s my favorite the 1655, a 1755 and his big horse a 1850. I absolutely loved that 1655 it was just the right size to pull forage boxes, cut hay and bale and it was so simple to drive.

      Thanks! I used to grow tofu soybeans that were sent to Japan. They really liked our tree lined fields because they all but eliminate the chance of contamination from a neighboring field. They also suck a lot of water and nutrients out of the soil near them, so they have their downside as well.

    Must be second cut? Up here we are still working on first cut. 🤣. But there aren’t many years we take a second, usually into grain harvest by then. Lots of times once the hay gets a few good frosts we’ll let the cows graze off the regrowth.

    64, grew up on a dairy farm in my teenage years and was a heavy equipment operator in my career. I will buy that tractor if i ever win the lottery. 😊 I remember riding the school bus in the late 60s and a dairy farm up on a hill had a yellow one and green one ... at the time i didn't know tractors but knew that those 2 tractors had big front tires and were bad looking. What a lucky farm to have owned 2 of these at the same time way back then.

    Having watched you and oliver66farmboy for a few years now. I have a question about you guys in MI. Why don't you clean the trees like totally out of the old boarders of the fields? Here in NC Indiana they have been disappearing for several years now. We don't even have fences or tree lines between owners much anymore. We still have woods spotted around but there are getting to be less and less trees in old fence rows as well as no fences.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  3 месяца назад

      It happens somewhat here. We did a lot of hedgerow removal in the 80s before some of the conservation rules kicked in with the farm programs. They way I understand it now, I could cut all the trees down because lumber is an agricultural product, but the moment I start pulling stumps I better get permission from the FSA and NRCS, or I'll be in trouble. I got some grief from them over taking out a few trees that were under a power line near a wetland. "You're getting close to that wetland" I paid them to come out and mark the boundaries to keep the peace. Another issue is that nearly every line of trees that is there grew up out of an old fence line that wasn't maintained. We also dumped our rocks in those fence lines, so when you take them out your best bet is to dig a big hole and push the fences and stones in. That can get expensive and buries a lot of top soil. I will say, trees make great neighbors. The guys that farm to the edge of the road always seem to have some idiot that decides to see how much corn they can run down on a Friday night.

    • @dalecoffing8655
      @dalecoffing8655 3 месяца назад +1

      @@ThatOliverGuyChris As a former FSA/CED I did think about that. (Retired in 2011) As a farmer it's tough to make cense of it all. Thanks for the explanation kiddo. I just know on our own farm it can get to be a lot of work keeping them trimmed back and they can sure scratch up your combine. We even built a "man cage" to fit on the front of brother's backhoe to run chain saw from. Be safe out there. Hang on to that combine ladder!

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  3 месяца назад

      @@dalecoffing8655 back when I grew tofu soybeans for export to Japan, they loved my hedgerows. They said in Ohio it was common for the neighbors to use your field as a headland, so there was the chance of contamination. I have only one 10 acre field that borders crop to crop, so I could harvest edge to edge on almost every acre I have. The Ohio guys had to harvest the outside couple of passes separately.
      One other detail about wetlands.... They are everywhere up here. About 15 years ago we bought an 80 that adjoined our home farm, no trees there, just fence posts. A few years after buying it they reassessed it and the taxes went way up. The township said it was less than 50% tillable, so that made it swamp/hunting land and all the Detroit/Chicago hunters have drove the price of that kind of ground higher than ag land. I told him the FSA siad it was 43 tillable out of the 80, which is more than 50%. They switched it back to ag and saved me a bunch of money.

      @@ThatOliverGuyChris I understand,. We are Non GMO corn. (Waxy) It has worked well for us except when all the neighbor's corn pollinates the same time as ours. It there is a line of trees between the fields it does help. 2 years ago was especially bad. We lost our premium on about 40% of the crop. I try to plant corn next to the neighbor plants beans. Not always possible. But that typically takes care of the problem.

    Gee, too bad you couldn't get through a video without a deer(e) making an appearance. I expect it from Ross' videos, but you usually avoid it! 😅
    I assume this was the 4th's parade unit!

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 месяцев назад +3

      The opening scene flying over the beans, there was a deer out there. I stopped and sent the drone up and figured I'd buzz the deer. By the time I launched, the deer was nowhere to be seen.
      The 1655 has made quite a few appearances in the 4th of July parade. It's always a crowd pleaser, but still doesn't get the attention that Herman does.
