  • We're finally in Medan, aka Gotham City, Sumatra!!! In today's Indonesia Travel Vlog we take you on a walking tour all around Medan city - the capital of North Sumatra. We start the day walking from our hotel about 20 minutes to the Maimun Palace in Medan. When we arrived at the palace it was so busy!! We had to pay 10,000 Rp to enter the palace.....and then we decided to dress up! There were so many people wearing traditional royal costumes to take pictures in the palace, so we joined in too! It was 90,000 Rp each to rent the costumes. We got to choose which color we wanted (she said yellow and green are traditional, but the black is the most popular). Luckily they put the costumes on for us otherwise we would have no idea what we were doing! Carles's costume came complete with a sword while Natalie had a fan. After we were dressed we started taking pictures in and around Maimoon Palace and ended up taking soooo many pictures with everyone else who was visiting! 🤣 After taking lots of pictures, we decided to leave the palace and walk 2 minutes to the Grand Mosque of Medan (Masjid Raya Al-Mashun). The outside of this mosque is GORGEOUS! We were initially planning on trying to go inside of the mosque, but it was getting ready to pour rain and we needed to find clothes to wear so we decided to run away and find shelter! We crossed over the road to an interesting little mall which inititally we were hoping had food, but instead it had an amusement park in the mall as well as a (free?) gym?!? It was by far the strangest mall we went to in Medan! As they did not have any food options, we decided to run across the road again, in the rain, to an Indonesian food court area. There we were able to order Nasi Ayam and Mie Goreng which were SPICY!!!! But at least we avoided the rain. Once the rain stopped we checked out the Sri Deli Park to take pictures with the cute Medan sign! From there we continued walking through the streets of Medan to see the famous water tower - Tirtanadi Tower! It was built in 1908 by Dutch engineers who used strong steel pipes which have kept it standing until today! Apparently it still has pipes that supply water to all of Medan until today! Right next to the water tower is Jalan Selat Panjang - a popular place in Medan to eat street food (however it wasn't very busy when we were there, probably because we were early and it was raining a lot). We walked to Tjong A Fie Mansion - a historical mansion build in 1895 which has been turned into a museum. It was a great place to tour! After all the walking we needed a coffee stop which luckily led us to the coolest building in Medan (the black & white building that we know nothing about)! After coffee, we walked by the Medan City Hall to the post office (Pos Bloc Medan). The Post Office is another historical building turned into a little museum. It was a great and very busy day exploring all over the city of Medan!!!!

Enjoying taking pictures with foreigners is a characteristic of Indonesians, they are very interested in foreigners. They are not only interested in foreigners, but they are also interested in Indonesian artists and government staff and will try to ask for a group photo. Don't feel weird, because this is normal for them. Especially, for people living outside the capital. 😊

    Medan is unique.
It is actually a Melayu people region,
But, because Batak people is from North Sumatera, people think Medan is a Bataknese city.
But, actually the majority of Medan citizen is Javanese 😆
Not just them there is also Minangkabau, Nias, Karo, Mandailing, Aceh, Tamil, and Chinese people in Medan.
So actually it is very diverse.
And the Melayu costume is amazing on both of you 👍😄

yeah, indonesia spicy is just on another level, for example if you ask "just a bit spicy" for your food, it's mean its gonna be a REALLY2 spicy, and when you ask for the real "spicy" one, its gonna burn not just your mouth, but literally all of your body 🤣

    • @NataliesPassport

17:09 you can always ask them to "tidak pakai sambal (no chilli paste)" or "tidak pakai cabe (no chilli). replace "tidak" with "jangan" to tell them like an instruction (jangan means don't). keep in mind, "tidak pedas (not spicy)" for us indonesians mostly still mean somewhat spicy for many foreigners.

@@NataliesPassport Haha.. it's okay. As people who both like to travel, definitely like new things. And maybe walking around in areas of Indonesia where spicy food can increase your resistance to spicy food.
But if you need non-spicy food, you can request the spiciness level you want. Especially restaurants that don't display their food. This means that when you order, they have to cook it from scratch, and they can adjust the level of spiciness to your liking.
There are several common foods that can be adjusted for spiciness, such as fried rice or fried noodles.
And the good news, even if you are in Sulawesi or Sumatra,... you can still find food from other parts of Indonesia in that area that might be not that spicy. Even though it might not taste authentic, but maybe it could be an option for your consumption when traveling.
Whatever it is, I'm happy with your videos.. Please Enjoy our beautiful country with a lot of food.. But I hope you stay healthy on this trip... Thank you for trying new spicy foods, but hope you can still enjoy them without getting sick from spicy food...

trivia: what you call 'tuktuks' are actually different kinds of three-wheeled vehicle. In Jakarta we call it 'bajaj' - read as 'buh-jay' (the blue ones are natural gas / methane-powered instead of gasoline). In Medan they call it 'bentor' (with passenger seat besides the driver instead of behind him like in bajaj). Manual-powered tricycle (with driver sits behind passengers) is called 'becak' - read as 'bay-chuck'.

because you are in Sumatra, people there very love spicy ... you should try "Durian Ucok" (kingfruit), it tastes different with in Java ... also try noddle at Titi Bobrok ... and try Pempek (fish cake) ...
also you can ask the spicy level ...

Hi Natalie and Charles, i'm glad you both really enjoyed the trip, culinary to various regions in Indonesia. I report that on Mount Bromo in East Java area there is ice dew similar to snow that occurs in Summer. It's an absolute miracle and you two should be there. But don't forget to take care of your health and drink lots of mineral water including taking vitamins. If you have diarrhea, due to poisoning or eating too spicy drink green coconut water, which is smaller size than regular coconut. Okay enjoyed your next trip and take care 💪👍♥️♥️♥️♥️

Thanks for publishing my town, Medan. I was born n grow up in Medan, actually in Belawan.
Honestly, Medan has many mistakes for example the garbages. So many garbages in downtown. The river is dirry. Even so, the Major, still trying to handle this problem.
    Thank You Natalie and Charlie

If you have longer time, visit Nias Island by small plane. Nias is famous for its beautiful beaches, Sorake Beach in Nias is one of the best resorts in the world for surfing (please google for Nias).
