Well a warm/"Green" Greenland being settled by Denmark would likely result in a comparability stronger Denmark and being more open to empire building early on. We might see Danish settlements in the St. Lawrence river valley, the Hudson bay and possibly further south in North America. Along with more sugar colonies in the Caribbean like the Danish west indies. Along side a possibly world spanning trade networks similar to Portugal and the Netherlands. On the European side, Denmark was one of the richest per captia states in Europe with a high percentage of land available for cultivation and one of the most literate states in Europe during the middle ages. In this timeline with so much food coming in from Greenland and Denmark proper. Copenhagen would likely be a major center of trade for Northern Europe on the scale of Amsterdam or London. While a more relevant Denmark would flip the power balance in Europe. Favoring France (Denmark would not want a strong German state on it's border like France), Spain (A trade counter to the Dutch,Portuguese and the British) and Poland (Same reasons as France and Denmark would not want Russia dominating the Baltic Sea) and hurting Prussia,Austria,Russia,Great Britain's ambitions (Personally Sweden is on the fence on my take as both would want the Baltic and North sea but would despise Russia and Prussia) and Denmark would be a more significant player in major conflicts like the 30 years war,The great Northern war, The seven years war and the Napoleonic wars. But they would decline after Prussia began to unite the German states and Russia takes more of the Baltic states and by the 20th century. Things are starting to be more like our timeline again with Denmark only being a regional power in Europe and possibility losing Greenland to an independence movement.
Marylandbrony Great read, good job! However, why do you assume all of these European wars that happened on our timeline, would happen on this one? Accourding to your description, Denmark would have a huge empire way even before Spain. And why would Spain have an empire at all? If Denmark would be such a great power, then Europe would already know of the existance of America, and Spain would probably not be the first one to get there.
Spain's empire started in the Caribbean and later on in South and Central America. So there would little competition between the two. It would start later on with France and Great Britain similar to other colonial empires like the Dutch and Swedes. Besides the population of Denmark in 1500 was 600,000. Smaller than even the kingdom of Aragon (The secondary kingdom in Spain, Spain's population was 8.5 Million in 1500) Also the settlement of Greenland as a full colonial possession would require open-ocean navigation that would only become available when the new world was being discovered. So the Spanish colonization of the New World and the Danish colonization of Greenland beyond what the Vikings did would happen roughly the same time. Also even with colonies other small European states with colonial empires like the Netherlands,Portugal and Sweden still tended to either lose wars to their larger neighbors at home or abroad or avoid them entirety. For the wars in general there just names of conflicts and some of them would happen eventually regardless of how strong or relevant Denmark is. It would just be more likely they would be involved or be in it more deeply.
What if the Fukushima nuclear disaster escalated, causing a cloud of fallout to drift over Tokyo. The city would need to be evacuated, creating 50 million refuges and the largest humanitarian crisis in history.
I am thinking to this scenario. If Greenland is green, it could atract more people to settle. At the same time the viking raid would decrease, because some of the vikings will settle in Greenland. Fewer vikings in england. Perheaps england could unite faster. I think, that in our timeline, people go for land, so a free land with no big battles could be a better alternative.
The common enemy in the pagan Norsemen helped unite the Christian Anglo-Saxons, which where at that time split into four kingdoms unite against the common enemy and be united under Wessex rule. But I agree that some of the Danes and Norwegians that went to England eoukd have went for the less defended pastures in Greenland instead.
Yes, it is the land of the Angles. Learn some history, the originally british were driven out to somewhere in Wales and or Scotland, so the people that came in were germanic Angles and Saxons (yes, from Saxony). So it's "Angleland", or "England" for short.
Greenland is actually vividly green for four months when seen from the near sea, the coasts are covered with grass up to about sixty miles inland and during the medieval optimum temperatures never dropped dangerously on the coasts. Canada was much colder. Greenland had a cool maritime climate.
Actually, Erik the Red had another reason for naming greenland greenland. You see, before the little ice age that started in the 14th or the 15th century, the climate was a lot warmer than it is now. So warm it was, that parts of Greenland and it''s eastern coast was actually not icy, but green. Yes, he wanted more people to come, but when he first came, he came to a land that though a little colder, was still very much like Iceland. And here he spent his three years in exile.
basically if Greenland wasn't ice there would be dragons, pointy ear people, talking cats, and weird spiritual entities killing shit for fun. Oh and knockoff Romans would have found it too.
I’m really looking forward into reading your book, Cody! You’ve introduced me to the genre of alternative history and I never took the time to mention how I really appreciate the content you create... so yeah! Thanks a lot for showing me all this great stuff and teaching me history :)
2 things. 1) What if Lewis and Clark found a Northwest Passage? 2) What if Lewis and Clark found what Thomas Jefferson predicted they'd find? That is: mountains of salt, a race of Welsh-speaking Indians and herds of woolly mammoths, giant ground sloths, and other megafauna.
"What If Greenland Was Actually Green?" The Vikings probably would've called it something stupid like "Bowl Island" or "Erik's Totally Rad Secret Base Keep Out (Unless You're A Viking Then We Cool)"
There's always the other option that instead of dying off, the vikings decided that they had enough of freezing to death and went native with the people who were already living there. I have no historical basis for this theory, but it's good as any for why there's only remnants of them now.
If Greenland was one large farmable valley I feel like it would have been of far greater importance and thus attract many more settlers, maybe it could have led to a whole new Greenlandic kingdom or even lead to more Vikings attempting - and succeeding - to settle Vinland.
This was briefly mentioned by CGP Grey. I'll summarize it, give the New World Old World animals, and the New World becomes a dominant power. Also Europe gets the Americapox.
That Bad BLU Spy Maybe if you switched between the animals of the old world and the new world, but the scenario suggested here is what if the old world and the new world had the same animals.
There can be multiple dominant powers. Up until the formation of the European Economic Community, stability in Europe was based on a balance of power between dominant powers like the UK, Russia, Germany, and Spain.
what if every attempt of colonization was met with diseases they invaders had no defense against, and were met with complete hostility from a people fearful of Invaders from the East that tried to destroy them the last time they sailed in. Europe would have stopped sending people and just kept to round the horn to get to India, perhaps a canal would have happened a lot sooner to cut through Suez. so then the people already living in the ''americas'' could continue to live their 'peace with the land', instead of having to conquer it.
I have 5 scenarios I want you Cody make a video about. 1) what if Native Americans and Africans were advanced people like the Europeans? 2) what if the dark ages never happened? 3) what if Mexico and Canada joined the U.S? 4) what if Jurassic Park was real? 5) what if the polish won The Warsaw Uprising?
Around 900 AC, Vikings had large agriculture settlement in Greenland. Later around 1100-1200, the climate got really cold. Eventually settlements disappeared around 1300 AC.

That was.....lacking. No way for Greenland to be green without warming such as a meteor or something. Also no knock on effect to north America and colonisation by Vikings? Boh
My thoughts as well. A six minute video just to say "Some Vikings wouldn't have died trying to colonize it"? What about "how would it have impacted the rest of Scandinavian history? Napoleonic War? World war I and II? Today?" Very surface-level video, not worthy of AlternateHistory's usual content.
supernova582 its creator intended it to be an international language that didn't give any language group an advantage. It was proposed as an official language of the League of Nations but France and the Anglosphere stopped it
Greenland WAS somewhat green in Eric the Red's time. So was Northern England and they actually grew grapes for wine there. Then the earth cooled a bit as it does every 250 years or so and Greenland lost its green.

Greenland could be like Denmark or Norway if the Gulf Stream split in two and arrived in Greenland, but that would also change the climate of the east coast of Canada, maybe we would have a Canada colonized by Scandinavians and Greenland too.

Dude I've seen your entire channel and I love it, but I need to request the longest and best video, that you haven't made yet, What if WWII never happen? could you try to make a series about it? I love your stuff dude.
There's a good chance the Vikings would trade with inuits if they met on good terms. I don't think Vikings were very concerned about race or religious persecution, so if they met the inuits in a friendly manner, such as inuits bringing gifts to greet the Vikings, it's possible they could form a relationship with each other, and intermarriage may not be unlikely
Really, it ends with "they just don't starve" and cue the advertising? You could've gone way deeper into this, and it wouldn't require so much time as to take away from your personal writing.
