It's extremely puzzling that Mashiyama can compete at the GS Baku despite being expelled from the national team.
He was unable to compete at the GS Tel Aviv in February due to overweight.
An athlete who were unable to participate in the tournament due to overweight are expelled from the national team in accordance with the regulations.
He had also been selected as a representative for this year's World Championships, but of course was deprived of that right.
However, he can return to the national team if he finishes within the top three places at the Kodokan Cup.
Uchishiba, a two-time consecutive Olympic champion, was once expelled from the national team for the same reason.
He moved up from 60 to 66 because of this.
The Japanese athletes who participated in this year's GS Astana were apparently sent by their company, Komatsu, rather than by the All Japan Judo Federation.
Unlike Mashiyama, however, they're also members of the national team.
I'm not sure if an athlete who ain't a member of the national team can participate in IJF tournaments.

So there is no chance for Maruyama to make to Olympics squad unless Abe gets injured? Such a talent, but can't step on Olympics stage... So sad

That is if he's confirmed as the backup for Abe. I don't think they've decided who are the backups yet.

Sasaki recently competed again in a domestic tournament and was spotted training in BJJ. I don't know of any estimated timeline for him to be competing internationally though.
The Zenjuren actually had a split vote between Nagase and Kohara. It seems like at least for 81 and 100+ it's still possibly up for grabs, since the vote for the latter was also split between Saito and Kageura. For those two categories, it seems it could be as late as the Tokyo Grand Slam to have a definitive option, compared to something like 66 and 73, where the former has a clear best option (but unfortunately has two options who could win) but the latter only has one.

    • @JudoHighlights2015

They already decided 81 and 100

Sasaki got second at the Jistugyoudan (実業団). Next competition probably the Kodokan (講道館杯). If he places well he gets sent to the Tokyo Grand Slam.

Please can somebody explain: *how many athletes per gender can a country take?*
At Rio Italy were only allowed three per gender, but maybe things changed. At Tokyo Japan basically brought two per category but that was because they were hosts. Somebody said maximum of three and somebody one per category. Anybody knows?

    • @raphaelgracia551
      @raphaelgracia551 10 месяцев назад

If Maruyama is healthy and willing to prepare for it, I think he deserves a chance to compete for Japan in the Paris Olympics. His matches with Abe have always been very close.
