This seems to be a lie. As a Harvard graduate, I can say that Harvard didn't ask me any math problems for admission other than the standardized tests such as SATs and APs. Maybe, they did 100 years ago.
With the time it took to show the solution, anyone with 6th grade education could have worked it out "long hand", with time to spare. SO if the question was to find an answer, this is a waste. BUT if the purpose is to see if one knows how to manipulate exponents, that's a different thing.
