Being a Golden Retriever Owner I can tell that it's not as easy as it seems to raise a Goldie. Even though they are one of the most intelligent and gentle dogs, there are quite a few challenges that every new parent goes through. So I decided to share all the advice and tips for raising a Golden Retriever.

I currently have my 6th Golden and have always owned dogs in pairs or even 3 not just Goldens but other breeds as well. Right now with my new Golden pup I also have a Shih Tzu rescue. I have never had a problem leaving any of them. I start out with crate training, then a restricted area and by 18 months or so they have had the run of the house. If I am gone more than 5 or 6 hours, I have someone come in to let them out or walk them. I think having 2 dogs at once is the key to why I have never experienced separation anxiety along with making sure they have plenty of exercise.

I am so glad to have found this video. A golden is my dream dog, I have wanted one my entire adult life and will soon be in a realistic position to get a dog. But being single and working full time this is my number one biggest worry, even though my own parents did it with our dogs when I was growing up (2 cockers and then later a golden cross rescue). I will be living close enough to work to pop back on lunch breaks and also have the means to hire a dog sitter for puppy visits until bladder control gets better. I can also work from home a day or two each week. I don't do anything on evenings and weekends so I have all of that time outside of work to devote. I have so, so much love to give but I really want make sure I can do it right. This video is definitely reassuring that I can make it work. Thank you! Will definitely be watching all of your other golden videos :D

We are a family of eight. Our golden is 2 1/2 years old and never truly been alone. When we all went on vacation, he went with us. When everyone else is at work, school, out shopping, grandma is usually home, and our golden and grandma are always cuddling or sleeping. He is a very happy doggo, and loves the whole family.

Your golden will get bored and exhibit unwanted behavior if you leave them alone all day, but it can be fine. Just don't get upset if you find something chewed on. Take them out right before you go to work and first thing when you get home. Try to keep a consistent schedule so they know when to expect you. They will bark at anyone they see or hear outside, not so bad during the day but if you work night shift, your neighbors may not like you so much...

@@michaelthomas853 hi there! So sorry for the late response.
Yes, we got her several weeks ago and she is 16 weeks old today. As of right now, it’s going much better than we first started, but still pretty crazy lol. She’s got her potty training down so that’s good, but I remember at first when we got her, I honestly had the post puppy blues, as they call it. I still have it here and there, but it’s not as intense now. It’s HARD. I was expecting it to be hard but wow. Lol. If I were to go back in time I honestly would have waited until my son is at least 6-7 years old, but she’s here now and at least they’ll be able to grow up together. I just want to say, if you decide to get a pup soon, it’s hard, but not impossible. It did a number on my mental health though and the lack of sleep due to her needing to be out to potty 2-3 times a night drove me over the edge! She’s getting better but it’s still hard. I would’ve definitely waited to get her. Now since my husband is working long hours, I don’t have anyone else who can help me except him when he’s off, so taking care and training a pup has been exhausting, in addition to taking care of a toddler. Our pup however, is super sweet. She’s very hyper but sweet. But overall, we would’ve definitely waited a few years when our son would be older. A toddler and a puppy is very, very tiring!
      Good luck in your decision!!
Edit: I think with a toddler and an infant, I would definitely wait until they are older kids, but of course it’s up to you! I hope you have additional help so you can take time to recharge when you can :) it’s exhausting!

I tried to make sure someone took him out no more than 4-6 hours without issues and on the rare occasions 10 hours without incident but he wasn’t crated after 4 months old
I’ve got another Golden Retriever puppy coming on the 23rd of July but happily I’m now retired so Dillon will never need to be alone very long

(8am-2pm) My mother also stays at home, but she doesn't like dogs so much too say. My dad loves them but he is at office 2 days of a week (rest days r work from home.) I'll buy/adopt them in summer vacation so I can teach them b4 school starts again. I'll teach them these things you mentioned in the video. But again, should I buy 2 of them so it doesn't feel left out?

He loves and respect little kids. He loves his toy. When guests come he always brings his toy to the guests. He will shake hand and then show his tricks, roll over and loves to play etc. LUCK is the most handsome and loving boy. He is the most lovable in the community. ❤❤❤❤❤

Leaving them for 6-7 hours without a human is never a good idea as we have mentioned in the video but if your golden is well house trained and can be accompanied by your other two dogs well, Its something that you can try but yes always inform or give your neighbors your house key in case of emergency or atleast appoint a care taker to give them food and take them for potty breaks in between those 7 hours. • @jbnewman42
      @jbnewman42 2 года назад +1

Training starts the minute you take them home. It starts with CRATE training. I got my puppy during COVID when I was working from home. When I would "go" to work, I put him in a crate in the living room. This way he was learning to be "alone." I could hear him, but he could not see me. As he grew bigger, I set up an ex-pen around the crate so he would have some more room to walk around and play, but he still had is crate (den) if he wanted to sleep.
When I went out, I set up my ipad and put him 'live' on facebook so I can keep an eye on him via facebook on my phone. I left for shrot periods (run an errand etc.) and the time grew longer as he grew older and was OK with it.
Then, I'd leave him for short periods out of the crate (as in a few minutes) to see how he'd do. At first, he wasn;t thrilled, but he learned to be a champ.

Yes goldens can be mischievous when left alone but encouraging such a behavior could be dangerous for your dog and for you as well. Please firstly house train your dog right away and start dog proofing your apartment where your dog don't have access to cables, glass, toxic foods, etc.

If i have a garden, can i train him to just pee and poop in the garden while I'm away

Yes that works too, usually when dogs are left alone, they are trained to pee and poo in the bathroom because everyone don't have a private garden or terrace but yes since you have one it would be great ;)

Everything you just said Is not the way atleast 40% of all dogs live. Sooooo many Americans think it's fine to create there dogs for the whole work day!!!!

I think it very selfish if some people know they don’t have time for goldies but still gets one any way( or any other pet) these pets need attention and love.

leaving them alone for a couple of hours for you to work doesn't mean you don't love them
