One obvious hint about Westone’s involvement is that the physics and patterns during combat are very close to Monster World III, which would release just a year later on the Mega Drive.
I guess 1990 really is the peak magic year when a non-Nintendo, rather small developer manages to put out a Famicom game with no flaws that leads to "this is a garbage game."
In my book Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru Gaiden is a pretty cool game. It's rewarding, simple, fun and much more refined than the other "3 words + Gaiden" ARPG. The main real downside is almost no point in replayability :) P.S. The village theme (4:01) is such an earworm!
@@romannikonenko7325 oh, isn’t that the spin off of a SNES RPG that is better than the the original game? And people say that the Super Nintendo had the best RPGs. I think I misread what you said and thought you meant three games with 3 words + Gaiden.
It's actually very much the same idea. They're magical robots, so they write the name with the characters that mean "magic" and "god" or "spirit", but pronounce it so sounds like the English word "machine"
I believe there's also an action RPG on PSX based on the late 90s entry in this series. This one's okay, my only gripe is that the dungeons aren't super interesting. Everything else is pretty good.
The engine for the battle system has that wonderboy 3 the dragon's trap feeling. So I might try playing this game someday and hopefully there's an english translation for this.
@@RndStranger You remembered correctly. "Mashin Hero Wataru Gaiden (Japan) [T-En by Hubz v1.0] [n].nes" in my Everdrive xlation directory. I look up all the interesting games I see on this channel to find out if they have fan-translations. Many do! There's over 400 on RHDN flagged as "fully playable".
Okay, I playthrough'd the game with save states and beat it. What disappoints me is the cutscenes are pretty boring and quick. One example is when I was at the near end of the game where my mashins fuse each other to turn into ryuou-maru, my expectation of having a special scene of them fusing does not happen. And heck, even the final boss sequences (both start battle and defeat dialogue) are all awkward and no variety for the final boss theme. I love the battle system, but the rest aren't really polished and not much of variety other than the enemies, i'm referring to all the weapons and shields that don't really have specials.

I happened to like that music myself. The whole sound track is pretty good for such an obscure title.
@@RndStranger have a nice time playing this little gem :)
@@romannikonenko7325what are the other Gaiden RPGs you mentioned?
@@thomasffrench3639 it is only the one I've talked about - Kouryuu Densetsu Villgust Gaiden. It's from 1993, we're pretty close to it on Famidaily 😁

When I saw the word Mashin in the title, my brain immediately went into thinking about Magic Knight Rayearth which also have Mashin.

I'll have to check that one out. I've been eyeing expanding my Japanese PS1 collection lately (I just got Raystorm which is a great port).
Finally an episode where the man has no issues with the game at all. Does this suggest a solid recommendation?
Maybe I was in a good mood. 😁

If I remember correctly, there is a translation patch available for this one.

The difference between 1989 and 1990 is already very stark. I wonder why those years turned out so differently for the Famicom's output?
This is kinda like Zelda 2. Seems interesting
This game looks fun and beautiful!
I really want to check out Wataru sometime
huh westone doing an RPG? I did just find a bunch of translated ROMs and this was in the set, so may have to look into it!
