This was amazingly useful to me. I don't yet own an Alfa Romeo, and while I am very mechanical (22 year robotics technicican) I know little about car mechanics (grew up in Chicago with superb public transit -- my family didn't even own a car and we never missed having one really). But now that I want a) to ahve a convertible and b) to have a beauticful one and c) to learn to work on cars and d) to get good enough to do my own service and ultimately restoration of an Alfa, I've been reading and researching to gain a fundamental understanding of Spider mechanics (or prepare myself for finding out that it's not a realistic dream and that maybe I shouldn't get into it). But this video is SO clear and goes into such detail about not only how shifting works, but what works well and what works poorly and most importantly how that translates into how you need to drive (change gears slowly enough for the synchroniser to work without being damaged) and what to look for when things aren't right (oil leaks that might appear to be from elsewhere). I don't of course fully understand it from wahtching the video, but I DO know from watching that it is understandable and not intimidating if one applies oneself. this video was my "Rosetta Stone" for the Spider transmission. So THANKS for a tour of the Spider of really rare quality! I hope very much that you do more videos on the Spider. And of course good luck with your Spider!

Hi Simon. Thank you for the great video. Where are you located if I may ask? Next question is can you make 5th gear longer? The engine revs too high on the motorway.

Great great video ! Best video on the subject !
It is all very clear to me now.
I understand that my spider is due to a gearbox overhaul whenever I have the time to do it.
On top of lazy synchronization and a permanent grinding noise, gears are all whining under acceleration except 4th gear.
Do you think the gears are worn out and should be changed ? Or a thicker oil could help ? Thanks anyway for your nice video. Cheers.
