I have totally enjoyed these vlogs on the building of Silver Fox. THAT is how we would do it. I am an only child and my dad was a auto mechanic and later machinest extraordinaire. He taught me how to take care of my car, I watched him fix and repair things, and guess I inherited his genes to like doing that kind of things...even though I was/am a girly-girl!!!! I asked, and he taught me all about all of that stuff. Silver Fox is not only very pretty but you know her inside and out. That is fabulous! And, I have enjoyed and understood everything being done. Thank you for those vlogs.
Watched a few of your newer videos and like them and how you guys present and put them together and so I went back to the beginning of your 2nd narrow boat building adventure. I am absolutely loving it, learning loads and find it absolutely fascinating to see about right from the beginning. I fantasise about having a narrow boat but I think health and as a result finances would always stop me. You have providing me a with a laugh as well which living alone during Covid-19 lockdown is very valuable. Thank you so much, you've turned a dull and meaningless day into one with laughter and smile.
Very enjoyable series, it is great seeing your boat being built. I only discovered this channel a few weeks back, and just caught up to this video. The power audit table is very misleading when you talk about amp-hours for 230 volt appliances like the TV. Some may assume that relates to the amp-hours the batteries are rated at, which is far from the case. The 0.64Ah needs to be multiplied by 230V/12V to get a useful figure (12.3Ah). You will also need to account for the inverter efficiency which is harder to estimate, so you are better off doing a measurement through the inverter but lets assume it is 90% then your actual consumption would 13.6Ah. Another factor to consider with the inverter is there is some background consumption from it even when no 230V appliance is in use, unless of course you disconnect the inverter as well.
Hello! Thanks for the nice comment, I'm glad you're enjoying the series so far :) In regards to the power audit section, I'm sorry if you found the table misleading. As you can see from your own example above, working out exact figures is quite a complicated series of formulae, and in this particular vlog (as I mention at the end of that piece) all boats have different battery/inverter/power requirements and supplies. For that reason, and to keep things as simple as possible for this introduction to the power audit, the examples I gave were the basic calculations. One for working out a 230V amperage and watts from a 230V supply (I don't actually say that the 230V is being taken from a 12V battery - It could be from the 230V shore hook-up), and then a 12V example for use from a 12V supply (the fridge). The reason I didn't include provision for the inverter efficiency is, again, because our system hadn't been switched on at that time, and I wasn't going to guess because once we switch it all on I'll be doing an actual reading. Hence I said at the end of that part of the vlog that I would be following up with a more detailed power audit on our completed system, once the electrics were finished and all the appliances connected. I hope that all makes sense? I do tend to babble sometimes! And I hope you stay with us - The boat is almost finished! Colin xxxxx

However, I’ve just watched it the whole way through - and found it riveting! I already knew about power stations/transformers but the whole amp/hours thing had always confused me - but I loved your explanation. And the power audit - wow, fascinating! We’re caravaners and all I’d understood previously was that on a fair few campsites, boiling the kettle requires us to turn anything off and keep our fingers crossed! Brilliant! Thank you - I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Very well explained. I have explained the amp hour definition to people with good success but not in the short time you explained it...nicely done. This was a great video that many a boat manufacturer could use to explain the very basics for the new narrowboater...thanks for sharing...Vic

As an Aircraft Mechanic and total nerd Amateur Radio Operator, I find the topic of Electricity and Electronics quite fascinating. I think your idea of using a Jelly Bean battery to explain current draw in Amp/Hours was sheer genius. The power audit was easy to understand and I think many if not most grasped your explanation. Oh . . . and to see the two of you doing the Cha Cha . . . well that was the icing on the cake !

Hi Foxes. I found you from a recommendation from narrowboat girl. Good vlog, informative AND entertaining! I am impressed with your new battery bank. We have to manage with 300ah, so I’m rather jealous.
Hey Malcolm! Thank you for such a nice comment, and welcome to our channel! Our actual use is gonna be about 136Ah, so even using 50% we could manage with yours. Does that make you less jealous? (I'm trying here!) xxxxx
Foxes Afloat Lol. Maybe! No more space in the battery box anyway. The boat was built in 1988. It was all 12v until I upgraded the bank and added an inverter. Adding Solar has been the best upgrade yet and looking forward to seeing what you’ve done with yours’. We have 3*100w panels but suspect you have rather more than that...
Gents top video, I’ll share with you the most important equation I learnt as a apprentice spark , chaos over confusion = overtime 😜 I’ve used that more times then ohms law.
Colin, you should have been wearing a superhero cape when you were doing all your running around at the beginning of the vlog! :-) this was just brilliant! and i LOVED the outtakes/bloopers at the end of the vlog!
You explain everything so well and make everything so entertaining! I love the music you use in your vlogs. You are both so funny. The outtakes made me cry laughing! Thank you x
Cheers guys. I'm a bit late watching the vlog. But once again it was very entertaining. Way to make a pretty boring subject fun to watch. To be honest not sure if i actually learned anything but i did enjoy it. Keep it up boys and until the next vlog. Rusty
An excellent vlog on electrical consumption. The one piece of electrical equipment I hate is the hair drier, the batteries and inverter hate it as much as I do 😡. We are moored at Crick Marina, if we catch up with you come and have a free cuppa, Ian and Chris nb Jenny.
Ooh! guys - really pedantic comment. Your computer - unless you've got something really unusual - doesn't run on 230/240v. OK - you do plug it in to the mains but that nasty little black box (other colours are available) halfway down the lead transforms it into something different eg mine transforms to 19.5v (??!). So, its halfway between your telly at 230 and your lights at 12. Otherwise love the vlogs and can't wait to see you get your bottom wet! Sailing!!!
the jelly bean battery made my day. can't stop laughing! my husband is an electrical engineer and never was able to explain it to me so appetizing. my twelve points go to you. looking forward to meet you once on a canal. (I have always cake on board ;) )
Hi guys. Yet another amazing video vlog. The amount of time and effort you put into this as well as editing. Well done a big pat on the back. You both do amazing vlog 👍😀😎🍻
Foxes Afloat not cold at all we use the wood burning stove and have that running through the night and then by the time morning has come if it has dropped temperature or run out we just click the diesel heater on for an hour. Not had any issues at all. We have I would burner/coal and we have been picking up wood and using that for the last weeks. FOC 👍
That was great. Really well explained and as always so entertaining. I find the boat electrics complicated ☹️ The AH always seem to go quicker than you expect. I’m not sure why but as well as the AH I have to check my battery monitor doesn’t drop below 14.5v! I’m loads better with the electrics now but it is a bit complicated. Thanks as always for a fantastic video.
Was waiting for you to mention which type of batteries you are using. I just bought some for my motorhome. 120ah AGM batteries. As no doubt you are aware, l can drain those down to 20% dod. Although, that would reduce the cycle life. My main reason for choosing AGM batteries is no need to vent. Which is more important on a boat. Lithium iron phosphate would be the best choice in any application. Sadly they are far too expensive for most guys. I can afford them, but l am a tight Scotsman 😁. So l have my batteries, l have my 100/50 victron smartsolar panel. Now l just need to source suitable panels. Monocrystaline, the type l can walk on like yours. I am fortunate to be qualified in electronics, so a big saving installing myself.
nice calculation, but you need to do it in kWh - you missed a factor of ~20 for the consumption of the TV :o) Amp hours are okay when everything runs on the same voltage, but with 2 kWh for each battery you have a number that everyone understands.
Oh boy 🙄 haha! Look back at the previous comments. The figures are based on flat formulas, ie, a standard voltage before inverters, battery voltages or any other calculation is taken into account. I do say that in the vlog and that an accurate power audit will follow once we're up and running 😉
The best part about a relationship with an electrician? He keeps you up to date on current events.

Regards Steve
Hey Steve 👋🏻
I’m sure you’ll get to meet us one day! Don’t be sorry about watching the outtakes first 😂
We have 5 x 120w panels - Hopefully enough!
Very informative and entertaining. A magic combination!
Thank you! 👍🏻
Gents top video, I’ll share with you the most important equation I learnt as a apprentice spark , chaos over confusion = overtime 😜 I’ve used that more times then ohms law.
👍🏻
you guys are so funny but at the same time very informative
Awwww, thank you! 💙
A Informative and enjoyable Video Colin and Sean.
Colin, you should have been wearing a superhero cape when you were doing all your running around at the beginning of the vlog! :-) this was just brilliant! and i LOVED the outtakes/bloopers at the end of the vlog!
My best mate has a cracking Captain America outfit I’d love to try on 😜
Great vlog guys loving the in depth how it’s made type stuff. Also I think some of the things you put as outtakes would be good left in the vlogs.
Thanks, Mark 👍🏻
Another brilliant vlog, very informative and funny
Thanks, Jill. Lovely of you to say that 💙
You explain everything so well and make everything so entertaining! I love the music you use in your vlogs. You are both so funny. The outtakes made me cry laughing! Thank you x
Hey, Mandy!
The prize for the nicest comment so far goes to........ You! 🥰
Excellent presentation team 👍👏👏👏
Cheers, Terry!
Really loved this video....I have been struggling to understand the electrics on my boat Pangono.
Glad it was of help x
That was so very helpful. I’ve struggled with the power usage calculations in the past. But now I get it!! Ta. C
Glad it helped 👍❤️
Your Vlogs are very useful, thank you guys.
Cheers, James 👍🏻
Your vlogs are so professional BTW guy's. Absolutely smashed this vid and great info too. Leg-ends!!!!!!
Glad you didn't say legends.... Cos Leg ends is true 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@FoxesAfloat 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Cheers guys. I'm a bit late watching the vlog. But once again it was very entertaining. Way to make a pretty boring subject fun to watch. To be honest not sure if i actually learned anything but i did enjoy it. Keep it up boys and until the next vlog. Rusty
Cheers for that, Rusty. 💙💙💙
Just love the jellybeans part fantastic
Hehe, please don't eat the insides of a real battery 😂
An excellent vlog on electrical consumption. The one piece of electrical equipment I hate is the hair drier, the batteries and inverter hate it as much as I do 😡. We are moored at Crick Marina, if we catch up with you come and have a free cuppa, Ian and Chris nb Jenny.
Hey guys! Thanks for the invite! We'll definitely call in for a cuppa next time we're down there :) xx
😮 Very well explained Colin. Great presentation. So informative. Even as a mare caravan owner as I am this was very interesting. Thanks. 👍
Excellent presentation sirs 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Much appreciated, Lawrence 👍🏻
Another interesting and well presented vlog.
Thank you, Sally 💙
Just keep doing what you're doing because it very informative and just love you guys thanks .
Awwww, thanks Christopher! 💜
Ooh! guys - really pedantic comment.
Sailing!!!
Until recently, I thought that pedantic was something to do with feet. That's pedacure isn't it! LMAO! Thanks Leonard! xxx
@@FoxesAfloat Well, your'e half right. When I get pedantic I tend to put my foot in it........
Keep up the great work boyz. Love watching
Thanks Steven 👍🏻
the jelly bean battery made my day. can't stop laughing! my husband is an electrical engineer and never was able to explain it to me so appetizing. my twelve points go to you. looking forward to meet you once on a canal. (I have always cake on board ;) )
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi guys. Yet another amazing video vlog. The amount of time and effort you put into this as well as editing. Well done a big pat on the back. You both do amazing vlog 👍😀😎🍻
Hey Mark & Bridgett!
Thank you! 💙 How’s off grid life going for you guys? Any regrets? Big love to you both and Marley, Buster & Poppy 🥰
Foxes Afloat One big regret!...............
We should’ve done this sooner. 😂😎
How are you coping with winter?
Thanks, Sylvia xxxx
Thank you very much! It is a very informative video
You are welcome!
Nice one. We have Vetus 175Ah AGMs 👍🏻
nice calculation, but you need to do it in kWh - you missed a factor of ~20 for the consumption of the TV :o)
Amp hours are okay when everything runs on the same voltage, but with 2 kWh for each battery you have a number that everyone understands.
Oh boy 🙄 haha! Look back at the previous comments. The figures are based on flat formulas, ie, a standard voltage before inverters, battery voltages or any other calculation is taken into account. I do say that in the vlog and that an accurate power audit will follow once we're up and running 😉
Colin you with the jelly beans is hysterical😂😂😂😂 and informative!
Mmmmm... Jellybeans 😂
