    All these tests should be done at lowest apertures. F4.4 or f5 means nothing at all to me. Try it at f1.8 and do not keep the subject at the same distance to the lens. The movement should be direct to the lens so the focus distance changes and we will see if Fuji is capable of following the change. I can get more or less the same results here with a manual focus too since the focus distance is same and F.5 :))

      When X-H2/H2s was released it was so hyped as "finally as good as Canon/Sony" AF. As a long time Fuji fan since X-T1 I was excited, gave it a whirl but wasn't impressed. My retired parent always had trouble getting shallow dof shots of kids with their Fuji. Was hoping this would be the holy grail. Nope.
      They later tested a friend's Sony and fell in loved the AF abilities. They are casual photographer, not that techie and even they knew it was much better. Figured Fuji would have solved all this by now not get worst... Guess we just have to accept it as is. Maybe X-T6 will hit the mark?

    Jumping sideways frenetically doesn’t require the lens focus motor to move. As we can see, as soon as the subject moves closer towards the camera, those are the misfocused shots. And the focal length and aperture values aren’t even challenging. Just walk towards the camera in a straight line at normal speed until the head fills the frame. Use a 33mm f1.4 lens.

    • @stumagoo2395
      @stumagoo2395 4 дня назад +7

      It's obvious to me why he's not walked in a straight line at a moderate pace towards and away from the camera with a fast prime. The test was deliberately conducted to avoid showing the flaws Fuji's AF has with maintaining and refocusing on a subject which moves forwards and backwards.

    Over a year ago I had a terrible time with lots of out of focus photos at an event I covered with my X-T5, at the time no one on you tube was saying anything about the issue. I ended up selling my fuji gear and switched to Sony, it was a hard call and I felt like I was being too picky, in the end I was pleased with my decision. Your videos really helped reinforce that I wasn't crazy and from what I can see the focus issues seems to have gotten worse. I really hope Fuji fixes this soon, but I'm enjoying a system that nails focus 98% of the time because in the end it's the photos that matter most to me, not the gear that takes it.

      HII I’m in a similar dilemma but don’t know what to do. I’m a music artist and bought the X-T4 for the aesthetic and cinematic feel of the camera for my branding. But the focus issues are really tough for me to navigate considering I’m still newer to photography and video. I also film my self so manual focus is kinda annoying. But I’m worried that I can’t get the vibe and feel I want with Sony. What do you think? Which Sony did you get? Do you find you can produce similar images?

      If it helps when I had fuji I would get tons of "is that a real camera? is it film?" comments. Now I get "wow that is a fancy pro camera!" and "you must take great photos with that thing"

    I appreciate your hard work, but I think you incorrectly interpretted the autofocus results on this video and the mailin Xm5 review.
    Just because the focus square is on the face, it didnt mean it was actaully focussing there (the videos indoors test in the purple room) shows the focus square on eyes, but both cameras are focussed on the background.
    This us my biggest issue with Fujifilm! I can live with poor focus if the square can be reliable about what it was focussing on. Why is it lying about what it was focussed on?!

    • @gijspeters5866
      @gijspeters5866 4 дня назад +5

      Its not really lying about what’s in focus because thats not what the green box is actually showing, the box is merely the algorithm recognising and tracking the eye, its not a representation of where the AF motors are at that exact moment (although in an ideal world they would be the same obviously). I think this is where the problem lies for Fuji, for some reason the communication between the camera and the AF motors is off and its not making accurate or fast enough adjustments.

    The auto focus of this camera is not on par with any of the major cameras. I have two GFX Cameras and I don’t expect these cameras to capture fast action photo. @@LashahVideo I've used Fuji X-Series from their first one and what I've learned over the years is that there is a fundamental problem in their AF system (both hardware and software) that no firmware update can really fix. There's always a disconnect between their lenses and bodies and the software that runs both. Every time there's a new supposedly fast body, the lenses always get blamed as too slow, lacking LM motors or whatever. Then if there's a supposedly quick lens, it's the body that's suddenly lacking again and might need some magic firmware. All the firmware updates have ever done when it comes to firmware is make the AF interface seem stickier, faster, quicker to respond and yet on the actual images, you just find surprising misses. So yeah, I've given up. Fantastic cameras, really fun to use. But I'd never consider the X-Series for serious work like what I do in weddings anymore.
      The GFX though, fantastic. I'm also curious about the Panasonics. Their real time LUT's is so interesting.

      @@enshongmiranda@enshongmiranda Most Fujifilm Lenses have linear motors (all of the Red Badge Lenses and the newer ones). Firmware 1.03 (I believe) worked much better. They are making their cameras for Amateurs and Semi-Pros because, for the price of their latest Pro-Level Cameras (APS-C), you can purchase a full-frame system that will outperform them. Because I switched from Full-Frame to Medium-Format, I bought their APS-C Line and my run-and-gun (everyday camera system). Medium-format cameras are not your everyday cameras.
      I switched to Mirrorless Cameras over 10 years ago, and the Lumix GH3 was my first mirrorless system. They are excellent; I purchased the Panasonic S1 a couple of years ago and got excellent results (and back then, it used contrast detection).

    These are decent tests. I wish you had done more natural motion right to left, up and down and vice-versa. The AI that drives these AF systems are predictive and I’m guessing they are a lot easier to confuse by unnatural or extremely erratic movement that we wouldn’t necessarily see in nature. For example, when I shoot birds, sure there are some birds that may exhibit erratic behavior but these are the exception. Most movements are predictable to a degree (flight, hunting, right-left movement, head movements). I can see how the camera could lose focus when the movement is unpredictable.

    I think we're focusing on a completely wrong thing here.
    What Fujifilm doing is like playing a game of chasing the eye using box, even though it shouldn't.
    Box should be just an information that eye is detected in frame and the focus is at that position.
    With this premises, I'm sure Fuji isn't in the correct path of nailing focus at all. At least achieving Sony level of stickiness.
    Predicting isn't chasing but intercepting with many confirmed variables. With good Intercept, 3-5 steps faster can be achieved. Chasing is always slower than target until the target stops.

    I notice when comparing the AF between X-T5 with X-M5, the X-T5 was on AF-S and X-M5 AF-C. If you're going to compare AF systems between 2 cameras, at least have identical AF settings on both. Also, why not test a fast prime wide open and walk towards the camera in a straight line, then retreat backwards and force the AF to actually adjust with subject distance? Side to side movements do not require AF adjustments and are completely pointless. If he'd used a wide open aperture he could've increased the shutter speed and nullified a lot of the motion blur in the sideway movement shots and then we could really see if it was in focus. I personally do not think the AF has improved and I don't care how good or bad the tracking is if the subject is out of focus. This test just reaffirms my view that Fuji's AF is ok for stills, but for anything that moves you're better off with a Canon, Nikon or Sony.

    I wonder if the methodology for AF testing is a little unrealistic. Perhaps not acting like a five year old, overdosed on sugar and acting like an adult may produce more favourable results like perhaps the designers intended it working. Please I DO NOT mean that to be an insult, it is just a metaphor.
    I think photographers forget just how far autofocus has come along. I'm old school and still use prefocus for the times that I don't want to trust autofocus to get the job done.

Chris, I know you built this channel on Fuji, but I genuinely hope you branch out into some of the other brands so you can put things (like AF) in context.

  • @canyonblue737-8
    @canyonblue737-8 4 дня назад +2

    The X-M5, like all recent Fuji's has deep, deep fundamental problems with its autofocus. Just simply use any lens at a wide open aperture and start filming a STATIC subject that fills lets say 25% of the frame, like a person standing 10 ft away... it will hunt back and forth from the person to the background. The eye tracking box will stay accurate but the box doesn't really match what is the focus point. I *LOVE* Fuji, I love my X-T5, I love my X-100VI and I really appreciate pal2tech all these years being here for Fuji fans like us... but I will NOT buy anymore Fuji cameras until they really, really solve the focus issues with their platform. It doesn't have to be Sony perfect, but it needs to not be laughable by 2024 standards, and no excuse of cost, "its still better than a decade ago", or "well there are still some keepers" is enough anymore. Out of focus shots should be the rare exception instead of 25% or higher of my shots.

Even here, everything is shot with a massive DOF, so that pretty much everything is in focus, OR the subject is mainly moving sideways. Put a 50mm+ f/1.4 on this camera and just walk towards it at normal speed, it is very simple, but you're actively trying to hide the issue.

    The obsession with autofocus systems, so many people display (your listeners, not you Chris) somewhat amuses me. Back when I learned to take photos (sometime during last century ;-0) no camera had autofocus at all, and believe it or not, you could take good photos with these anyways. My cameras ("old" APSC Canons, and, of course, a Fuji X-T4, X-S20, and since some months now even an X-M1) have autofocus systems which work well enough in many cases. If my business work would depend on it, I might be tempted to look at other systems, sure, but for my beloved hobby the autofocus is good enough most of the time. There are other pet peeves which I could argue about, of course.
    Regarding viewers attention spans: if we always shorten explanations, videos, etc. to "care" for the attention span challenged, we will end with zero second attention spans finally. Teach people to watch longer videos Chris. Chapter jump marks should be enough to skip over stuff not of interest to the next part.
    And last but not least, as someone else already said, don't be so apologetic Chris. You're doing a marvelous job and I learned numerous details about Fuji cameras from you.
