    Congratulations bro! I hope to do that someday myself. Those trees are so majestic. May God protect them from greedy fools, the same sorts of fools who fell that 385 foot tall Sequoia in Northern California back in the 40’s.
    I used to live about 2 hours away from the giant sequoia trees when I was 7 years old. My parents managed a restaurant called Snowline Lodge. It was so precious living in that area. I live in Baldwin Illinois now. (Southern Illinois.)

    All those climbing these ancient trees are contributing to their demise. One or two scientists help us to understand what is taking place up there in the canopy. However - do you remember a teacher pointing out to you as a young student - if one person picks a flower, ok, but if everybody picks a flower, they will all be gone! And your teacher was right. If you truly revere these trees, admire them with your mind, and let them be here for your great, great grandchildren!

      Richard's Favorite Places Hi, I am an arborist that has been climbing trees for almost 20 years. You could go with someone like myself with very little training. It is harder than it looks though. The tree is on forest land so no permits needed. It is very important that we use climbing techniques that do not injure the tree. It will be around long after we have left this earth. One of the coolest things I have ever done.

      I used something called a big shot, which is a large slingshot on the end of an 8 foot pole. It’s used in tree work to set a throw line that you then use to pull up your climbing line. I can accurately set a rope up to about 100 and 25 feet or so. There is a picture of me kneeling down pulling down the slingshot in one of the first frames of the video.

      First I launch a small throw line up and over a limb from the ground. There is a picture in the beginning of me kneeling. I am pulling on a giant slingshot called a “big shot”. Once I was in the canopy I just continued by throwing either my climbing line or my smaller throw line and using that to pull up my climbing line. You can RUclips “arborist throw line” and you should see tons of techniques on how to get a rope up into a tree. By far my favorite is the “Big Shot”.

Over the last two years we’ve lost an estimated 10% Of giants. I assume you were in National Forest for this Climb. The National Parks are mighty strict. Last year 132 Square Miles of Sequoia/Kings Canyon burned. We were under a Mandatory Evacuation Order for over a month in September/October, but we chose not to leave. The Fire came within a half mile of our home. It’s good to have Wildland Firefighter friends. They kept us grounded and informed. The previous year there was another big fire to the South of us that affected a lot of Giants in the National Forest. Amazing Video. Just a few questions regarding a tree that size. At that height how can you tell you've secured a decent tie-in with the big shot? Did you commit your line to choking that first branch before ascending. Did you find a lot of branches getting in the way advancing your line. I've worked on a few Wellingtonia's and struggled with the drooping branch structure (or is this a coast redwood?). Thanks.

    • @Jeffopar
      @Jeffopar  3 года назад

      I just chose the largest safest looking limb and choked my climbing off to it. It looked very good from the ground. I did commit my climbing line once I sent the tail up. It was pretty easy to advance my line up the tree as I went. The canopy was open enough that little branches were not a problem. This a Giant Sequoia, the limbs came pretty much straight out from the trunk.

      I'm an arborist/timber faller in the Sierra Nevada, I used to live near a few of the over 250 foot Giant Sequoia, climbed them a few times. You cannot climb the Giant Sequoia in Sequoia National Park or Yosemite National Park. And beware that in some of the larger groves on Forest Service lands the trees are off limits for various reasons, the fires were so extensive that entire areas are not safe for climbing. Thousands of Giant Sequoia are dead, it's very sad. The sight of dead standing Giant Sequoia is depressing.
      Entire areas are closed, or it's not advised you visit right now.
      I've done a lot arborist work in massive Sugar Pines over 180-200 ft, and a few really big Giant Sequoia next to cabins,over 200 ft. I love my job, sole proprietor.
      Taking the time to visit the General Sherman Sequoia is well worth it, it's stunning. And then after a visit there it's amazing to think that the Lindsey Creek tree was close to twice the over all volume, blew over in a storm on 1905.
      Many of the Coastal Redwoods were over 425 +ft.

    Cool. I couldn't do it as don't like heights. Although it is majestic climbing a tree that old. Where those lines already in the tree before you started?

      Thanks for representing from arfcom! I set the initial climbing line from the ground with a "big shot" basically a giant sling shot. Then I had to advance my lines up in the canopy with a small throw line.

      Cool. I always represent the videos from arfcom. Funny you are the first that has said that. There is another guy that posts mainly motorcycle videos and some guns his channel on RUclips is nws and he is another poster on arfcom. Its all #'s for his username there 10 something never can remember the rest. Look up Bike won't start. Hard to look cool. on arfcom and you will find him.
