A trip out to Sequoia National Park is unforgettable. You should go out for sure. The idea for this climb came while visiting the park. This tree is south of Yosemite.
Richard's Favorite Places Hi, I am an arborist that has been climbing trees for almost 20 years. You could go with someone like myself with very little training. It is harder than it looks though. The tree is on forest land so no permits needed. It is very important that we use climbing techniques that do not injure the tree. It will be around long after we have left this earth. One of the coolest things I have ever done.
@@Jeffopar When I get ready to come out there, maybe you could help me climb one? Could you drop me an email and let me know how much you charge and that sort of thing? richardsfavoriteplaces@gmail.com
Hi Don, if you look at the beginning of the video I am using what is called a bigshot. It’s basically a giant slingshot on an eight foot pole. I shot a weighted throwline up first, then used that to pull my climbing line up and over a branch.
First I launch a small throw line up and over a limb from the ground. There is a picture in the beginning of me kneeling. I am pulling on a giant slingshot called a “big shot”. Once I was in the canopy I just continued by throwing either my climbing line or my smaller throw line and using that to pull up my climbing line. You can RUclips “arborist throw line” and you should see tons of techniques on how to get a rope up into a tree. By far my favorite is the “Big Shot”.
"Landowner"?! It's in a park (state or national, not sure). Probably have to 1) make a reservation, 2) pay an insane fee and 3) climb with a guide from a certain list of approved guides. Crazy expensive, I bet.
Dan Tyler Actually it was completely free. I am an arborist so I own all my gear. The tree is on forest land so no permission or fees either. One of the coolest things I have ever done. I climbed it alone and my wife flew the drone.
I launched a throwline up into the canopy with a “big shot” basically a giant slingshot. I then used that to pull my climbing line up and over a branch.
Thank you, it was an amazing climb. No wildlife, my wife got eaten alive by the mosquitoes on the ground though. She toughed it out to get that drone footage.
What would I give to climb this tree but my only problem is I'm a free soloist tree climber but aged 68, began just over two years ago. Having said that I would love you to tell me where I can go to find someone to climb this Sequia
Just a few questions regarding a tree that size. At that height how can you tell you've secured a decent tie-in with the big shot? Did you commit your line to choking that first branch before ascending. Did you find a lot of branches getting in the way advancing your line. I've worked on a few Wellingtonia's and struggled with the drooping branch structure (or is this a coast redwood?). Thanks.
I just chose the largest safest looking limb and choked my climbing off to it. It looked very good from the ground. I did commit my climbing line once I sent the tail up. It was pretty easy to advance my line up the tree as I went. The canopy was open enough that little branches were not a problem. This a Giant Sequoia, the limbs came pretty much straight out from the trunk.
I used something called a big shot, which is a large slingshot on the end of an 8 foot pole. It’s used in tree work to set a throw line that you then use to pull up your climbing line. I can accurately set a rope up to about 100 and 25 feet or so. There is a picture of me kneeling down pulling down the slingshot in one of the first frames of the video.

I'm an arborist/timber faller in the Sierra Nevada, I used to live near a few of the over 250 foot Giant Sequoia, climbed them a few times. You cannot climb the Giant Sequoia in Sequoia National Park or Yosemite National Park. And beware that in some of the larger groves on Forest Service lands the trees are off limits for various reasons, the fires were so extensive that entire areas are not safe for climbing. Thousands of Giant Sequoia are dead, it's very sad. The sight of dead standing Giant Sequoia is depressing. Entire areas are closed, or it's not advised you visit right now. I've done a lot arborist work in massive Sugar Pines over 180-200 ft, and a few really big Giant Sequoia next to cabins, over 200 ft. I love my job, sole proprietor. Taking the time to visit the General Sherman Sequoia is well worth it, it's stunning.
