Met Derrick when I was a NYS Trooper directing traffic in Watkins Glen after the race in 1990. I congratulated him on the Daytona win and shortly afterwards a young boy came back to the intersection with an autographed photo of Derrick and the 10 car. He said Derrick wanted me to have it. Class act.

Dale Jr..great job of telling a story that many people needed to hear about Derrike. He was our first hire when we decided to put Purolator back in Nascar and rebuild our brand. We hired the driver first...not the way it is normally done. I wanted someone who would represent us..in the car and outside the car. He is genuine..a fierce competitor..and since 1987, when I was the president of Purolator, a lifelong friend. He has never forgotten who gave him the opportunity to live his dream..and in return, what he did for us and the Purolator brand can't be measured. As another comment stated..Derrike was a sponsor's dream!

As much as I enjoyed watching Dale Jr. race on the track, I enjoy him that much more as an interviewer. His history around the sport and upbringing really comes through when interviewing these older guys. Also, glad to see Derrick Cope doing well and I really enjoyed hearing what he is up to now. Like Jr, I enjoyed the old Purolator paint scheme.

So many Questions no body ever really ask Derrike about 1990 and what happen to that team. As an Earnhardt fan having watched that 90 Daytona 500, Never thought it was fluke, Just bad luck and right place at the right time. I remember I was shocked at what happen on that final lap, but That 10 car was there and fast all day long. That 10 car was fast all year in 90, and my mother being from Washington state really loved rooting for Derrike all year after that win. In fact she rooted for him just about every weekend from 1990 into the 2000's. Great Job Dale, Thank You for Sharing Derrike.

Derrike Cope is one of my favorites. Him winning the 1990 Daytona 500 when Dale Earnhardt had a flat tire. He was one hell of a competitor. He had an amazing career and he did a great job as a team owner. One of my favorite paint schemes from Derrike was the purple #74 for Ryan McGlynn when he was tried to qualify for the Daytona 500 in his duel in 2006. He did a lot in the Cup Series, the Xfinity and The Truck Series.

I didn't know anything about Derrick Cope up until the 1990 Daytona 500 Race when his name was drawn for one of the squares I purchased on our Moroso Daytona 500 Pool... I'll confess I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get Dale Earnhardt, Sterling Marlin, Bill Elliot, Lake Speed, etc or any of the likely hot contenders... I was pleasantly surprised when Derrick ran well all day and was completely content on maybe getting a 2nd or 3rd place win in the pool... Until that 'What The Hell Happened' on the last lap when Derrick Cope Won The Daytona 500...

Tightening himself up to the point of being uncomfortable actually makes a lot of sense since most drivers would lose 4-8 pounds back then.

Say what you want about this guy, but imo he has to be considered one of if the toughest drivers right up there with Ricky Rudd and Coo Coo Marlin. Im sure his crash at Richmond would have ended in a fatality for any one else

Derrike Cope needs to be a broadcaster in Nascar with that voice.
