Earl Sweatshirt's Forgotten Masterpiece

  • What I like the most about Earl is the way that he intricately expresses his Trauma through his lyricism. Even without reading his backstory, we all know that he had a tough relationship with both of his parents, his grandmother has always been his rock and that he’s found himself in the abyss of soul searching in his journey of life.
Apart from his journey of soul searching produced an EP called Solace. The experimental hip hop EP was uploaded to his unofficial RUclips channel dar Qness on April 28, 2015.
Many of us didn’t expect it, nor knew what to make of it, especially the first listen around.
Solace brings us through the emotional rollercoaster of being at rock bottom. Earl uses the medium of creating music to get out of this abyss. Although this EP isn’t on streaming services nor his official channel, I think that it is an essential piece to his career.
Earl was able to bring his emotions to the table, once again. By translating this mental state into sound, he showed thousands of others that they are not alone.

I listened to Solace last year on the night I found out that my grandfather had passed away. I'm thankful for that EP, it was the only thing that comforted me that night.

I don't think solace is forgotten. I think it's just treated as sacred while also not exactly being a good conversation piece with your day to day people.
Could you imagine? Instead of an ocean of people dancing and shouting lyrics, an ocean of people silently brooding and disassociating. People staring down a dark highway driving home after losing a loved one, people on their 5th shift of the week making sandwiches and coffee filled with bitterness and apathy. People who haven't gotten out of bed in days. people parked in front of the liquor store, calculating how to get their fix and not have their partner or parents or nurses know.
Oddly enough I'm sure those are a lot of the same people who go to those festivals and bounce around, but there isn't a public forum for misery unless you want to go to an AA meeting.
Life is strange. Im hurting a lot these days, but I love all of you.

Solace is a scary piece of work. Earl is very talented at rendering thousand-yard-stare depression sonically. Solace? Peanut? Terrifying music really, it's not something I want to revisit often because, as a self destructive person, I lean into it.
"It's me and my nibbling conscious, nigga I'm fixing to give up." Probably some of the heaviest words every pieced together
Idlsidgo came out when I was going through a break up. I discovered solace right before my grandma passed away. And then SRS came out right after I got out of rehab. I feel a very strange, specific connection to earl and I hope the shake that man's hand one day

I remember listening to Solace with my best bud on new year’s eve 2020, the day that DOOM’s death was announced. Solace came on his recommendations so we watched it. This EP just hit harder within the context of everything that was happening. It’s tied with some rap songs as my favorite Earl project, but it’s definitely my favorite EP of all time.

this isnt forgotten lmao. this EP has rapidly grown in popularity more than any of Earl's other works (aside from Some Rap Songs). This analysis also was kind of bland and lacks any deep analysis, more just vague observations and pointing out the obvious in mental health and obsessive nature and the grief that he holds in his hands.

I always felt like I was in a prison stuck with drug abuse, family issues, losing family members. I got so numb to it
“it was like that whole time we’ll be alright” “staying up all night” where the drug abuse started then quitting felt like “I’m fixing to give up” there was a few people there for me “I’ve been alone for the longest” how I felt with myself. But solace made me feel like I wasn’t alone
