"Done is better than perfect" What a great quote. One I always tell my students is .."You have a million bad drawings in you...get them out" Thanks brother...great video.
Its a paraphrase of the famous phrase "Do not allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good." When it comes to art I think the paraphrased version works better.
bonjour...merci pour cette magnifique vidéo....mais svp comment puis savoir l emplacement du cercle ....de face j ai bien compris......autres positions je n arrive pas
In the block-in stage you are at each step providing the solution to problems you would otherwise encounter in the next step. This is not just to say that you are thinking ahead, but rather that you are letting yourself solve as few problems as possible that are amassed over time by your past self.
A wonderful comment, thanks. It's different than saying: "I didn't cause it, I can't control it and I can't cure it", as stated by many for a variety of problems in life!
I won't say I'm an expert artist, more on the lines of a hobby artist.. I've always wanted to do portraits - it's a strange fascination for me.. but I'm terrified of it.. I don't wish to spoil someone's face 😂 so I joined your class on Udemy - that's ongoing.. and now here on RUclips... Must say, these techniques and tips and tricks is what has brought me a little out of the cave of "I'm scared of portraits" will continue to learn!! Thank you so much!!
I’ve looked at many videos like this showing the different methods. What I find difficult to grasp is how random you take a slice from the sides of the ball and how the other lines seem to be just guesswork without any reference to the model. To me the head could be any head, male or female. So maybe I am missing an important part of the method. I am also no looking to copy a picture but apply this to live sitters.
"No, no, no...put a knife through the model for the sake of art." Puaaahahaha! I am struggling with the Loomis method right now! Will try your tutorial!
Loomis and Reilly methods are really hard to get a likeness for me. I just end up with a generic head. For anyone who has the same problem, try out Chris legaspi’s method. Worked better for me. Might help you too. But not to discredit the other methods, they are still essential. Any tips for likeness with them mr juice?
i have had the same issue as you with loomis, my mind just seems to not be able to comprehend it but the reilly method and the asaro head are what i was able to relate to
How am I going to do it with charcoal, these many lines and then erasing them is going to spoil the paper. Also would cause problems with coloring and it is not going to work with ink pen at all which I use for daily drawings.
For charcoal you can begin the sketch with vine charcoal which is easily erased, changed, moved around and so on. OR, sketch in very lightly with a B HB graphite pencil-just don't dig into the paper very much or it will score the paper and/or cause a sheen. After the rough is laid in you can go to your darker charcoals in steps such as B, 2B, 4B , 6B etc. gradually getting darker. These techniques work with ANY medium including ink. Cheers
Im going to try these. Ive done basic lines forever. But my proportions/placement are dogshit and Inconsistent. So... this was a good place to see techniques. Thanks man! *follow
You should be a big youtuber, I started drawing daily with a mindset of becoming a decent artist a week ago and I've been reading the Loomis book. But when I got to the Loomis planes of the head nothing seemed to work and I always messed up the proportions, so I searched for some tutorials about the planes and here I am. You are great! With the Loomis book and your channel I'll be drawing people with ease in no time!
All jokes aside, the problem I have with the Loomis method is that it takes a fair amount of understanding proportions before you even start. And, while it may just be the various tutorials I watched, it didn't tell you where the various markers for those proportions are. Chop off the sides of the head. Okay...but how much of it? Where does it start and end? I kept chopping off too much or too little, which led to the face looking wrong but not knowing why. It was years later that I watched some random person doing free drawing and they used a guideline at the end of the eyebrows that coincided with the start of the side plane of the head. And then it all clicked for me. Why didn't the 100+ Loomis videos I've watched ever show this guideline? I now use the Loomis method. But with different guidelines that make more sense in my opinion.
Love so much this video. Like the video is the best. As we develop day by day, Always follow your luck. I sincerely hope that your channel will be very big.
Hey Chris, that´s a great instructional video! Thank you!! And I would like to say that I felt happy cause you talked about Glen Orbik. I bought some recorded lessons of him - from Zarolla... And he was already gone... And I watched those lessons more then hundred times... LoL! And I feel a kind of connection that I can´t explain, I fell as I´m one of his real students... Anyway, glad to talk to you. Cheers from Brazil!!
I totally get you! I watched that one too years ago, and I refer back to it all the time. Such a great teacher and was privileged to meet him. Thanks for your comment and for supporting my channel!
@@ChrisPetrocchi My pleasure Chris!! He seems to be a bold and funny Guy - Nice to hear from you. So, keep rocking with your Art and inspiring us! Hugs brother!!
This video presents the methods. It doesn't explain them well at all. So, it's not really a tutorial. But I've never heard of three of these methods, and I'm interested in the Reilly, Hu, and Asaro methods as I'm familiar with Loomis. I struggle with likenesses and am self-taught. I can draw likenesses if they are already drawn by an artist, but, drawing from the photo or model is very hard for me.
Yeah loomis and Reilly are usually taught as fundamentals. It’s amazing how he was able to go from a generic head to a likeness here. I can never get that right. But I think it’s also because the model here is very close to the idealised male head the loomis method leads to.
Wonderful and informative, I am interested. I will like to go to art school; there are many things to learn there. I understand we do not need to study art before becoming artist but it will help to do a little studying before hand. I see art as a means to send positive messages...
@DRAW JUICE I always see people start drawing with a sphere first. But can you start off with a cube first? Then I suppose the sphere would be inside the cube? Would be great if u could explain it or even make a video
Thanks for skipping the most important steps at 6:25. You just showed how to draw a generic head from 3/4 view, and then placed his characteristics without explaining how we can do it and make it look like the person pictured. I kinda hate these videos. It's like the maker is trying to show off his drawing skills but also doesn't actually want to help people learn
Your description of the Loomis method is too exaggerated and gross ‘bro’. Many artists use that method to good effect ‘bro’. Anyone who ignores so many very good artists should.not be teaching art! Bro!
Apparently everyone that made previous comments is just much faster than I am, 'cause the pace you move at is much too fast for me. I'd have to spend the entire day watching this over an over and over to get it. I was just going to ask if you could just go a bit faster, but I know some folks don't much care for sarcasm. Yeah, I'm getting nowhere fast on my courses.
It doesn't make any sense. Lumis and Hu's methods is the same. As an artist, these are basic blocking methods. you can disregard the steps but you cannot forget the principles.

Why do so many people say the midline is the brow when it’s really the bottom or even middle,of the eye?

Asaro is great but is ideas about how limbs should be drawn results in a wacky-waving-inflatable arm man. Or a water Willy from the 80’s.
Who else is drying trying to make these nice soft smooth lines
