    Brilliant that. When The Family Mahone played their version of Dirty Old Town in The Citadel a few years back I thought yeah, that could be St Helens. My dirty old town, and there's nothing wrong with that

    Really good seen Lowe street where my dad grew up with the rest of the Hunter family and i do have some vague memorys of it. Also seeing how much St Helens has changed but still love the town, despite what people say.

    Thanks for this... it was really interesting. My mum's family came from St Helens and there's still a branch of the family there. Tebb's furniture and upholsterers. My mum was a Tebb and her father and grandfather were in the Salvation Army there - both George Tebbs. Mum's mum was a Shepherd and her sister married a Robert Berry - the Berry Brothers fruit business in the market probably died with them. I remember going to stay with the one who married Bob Berry regularly as a child... but my Tebb grandparents moved to Blackpool and had a boarding house there. I wish I could remember more of it all.

    Well, the Dirty Old Town was Salford. I was taken to 'Sintelings' by my family many times as a child; I thought it just about the worst place on earth! Years later I met someone from the Royal Commisson of Historical Monuments ( who survey the country). I asked him which place he considered the ugliest in England: like a flash came back 'St Helens'!

    Under the roads the old tram lines are still there just buried under the tarmac like the old cobble stones. Pity really the roads are not like that anymore there would defo be no pot holes.

    @crispee78 No, from Prescot (pron: Preskit) down the road. As a teenager St H became OK for its pubs, cinemas etc and we could walk (stagger) home if we missed the last trolley bus.

    @andy4248 Well andy,to my knowledge woolybacks were the men that loaded wool onto the ships in liverpool docks.Therefore us being called wools by scousers is a complete head scratcher,for they are the wooleybacks in truth.Anyways lots of them head down the east lancs to live here so it least we can re-educate em.

    This town is, and probably forever will be a shit hole. I was born in 2003, and though I’ve not seen all its collapse, I’ve seen a fair chunk. The town centre has gone from booming, to being a ghost town at times, just in the 15 years I’ve been here. I’ve seen videos of it from 1988, and it was fucking beautiful. What happened to this town?

  • @systemanic
    @systemanic 10 лет назад +3

    Saw a programme the other week where they were making an allotment in St Helens, What annoyed me was the titles gave it as St Helens, Lancashire. No it is not, St Helens is not in Lancashire, it is part of Merseyside ie Liverpool. There's enough scouse people in St Helens so it should be part of either Knowsley or Liverpool, but certainly not Lancashire.

    • @urbanangel13
      @urbanangel13 8 лет назад +1

      +systemanic oh shush. St Helens will always be Lancashire, just cos boundaries get moved means f*ck all. i'm from Liverpool & i live in St Helens. ps Knowsley is not Liverpool either you do realise that don't you? being in Merseyside is not the same as being in Liverpool.
