We seem able to lose all of those during times of peace as well. Especially in this current age, where those who lord over us tell us how to think if we don't want to be mislabeled as "evil" just because we have the common sense opinions that there are only two genders, or that abortion is wrong. I see monsters like Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Hillary Clinton, or even Lindsey Graham and Kayleigh Mcenany. Monsters exist both inside and outside of War. I still consider "Mononoke Hime"/"The Princess Mononoke" the greatest theatrical anime of all time. It delves into things so thoughtfully. The violence in it, which at times was strong, actually proved a point. Ashitaka became extremely dangerous because of the curse. Everything he did basically became a killing blow, whether he intended such or not. Curses, hate, rage, pain...they make you lethal...but at a steep cost.

Cod WaW already taught me this. Depending on your actions in the Russian part of the campaign a certain character will have different opinions on you. Though like most horrible things that happened his words fade away into echoes. No matter what you do or how horrible you are in the end it’s gonna get covered up. This is probably one of the darker aspects of war. The forgotten stories, ones that don’t get to see the light of day because they will cause us to question whether or not our actions are justified. Things like the Laconia incident get forgotten because it makes the enemy less of an other. People like John Rabe aren’t talked about because they don’t fit the narrative of good vs evil. Every country is guilty of this. As a old Brit once said: “History is written by the victors. History is filled with liars.”

However, when the choice is between war and being dominated by an authoritarian and genocidal foreign government, I believe it is not only moral but imperative that those with the power to do so stand up against an attacker. And when Stephen Douglas said that he loved democracy so much that he didn’t care if individual states chose to allow slavery, Lincoln ridiculed the position with the phrase “if any one man were to enslave another, no third man should object” and Lincoln promised to repeal the Fugitive Slave Act. And he emphasized that his difference with the abolitionists was that he wanted slavery abolished within a Constitutional framework. When the Southern States seceded, while Lincoln was still on the train to Washington to be sworn in, each one explicitly named protection of the institution of slavery as a major reason for so doing. Which was why Lincoln eventually offered to live with slavery in exchange for the reintegration of the South into the Union but the South turned him down. I was talking to my mom about this, and she pointed out that while everybody understands to some degree or another that was is bad, few understand WHY it's bad. There's hate, yeah, and destruction of property and life of course, but the fundamental reason war is waged is for control -- particularly government control. Control over land, over resources, over people, etc. Garnering an emotional response from people is a big part of it -- weather it be against a person, a nation, a race, or even something non-human like drugs or disease -- if people singlemindedly view something as a threat, it makes them far easier to control. So the reason a libertarian like me or my mother is against war is not necessarily because of those bleeding heart things like destruction and loss of life -- that's just icing on the cake -- but because that's a major way government grows and oppresses and takes liberties, nationally or internationally.

The Imperial Japanese government and military were perhaps the greatest force of evil and cruelty the world has ever seen. Even the Nazis were horrified by what the Imperial Japanese army did in China. Mass rape, competitions to see who could decapitate the most people in an hour, using civilians for bayonet practice, throwing babies into the air to be impaled on bayonets or shot like they were clay pigeons, and countless more war crimes and crimes against humanity. For a mere 50 people killed and the Imperial palace being damaged in the Doolittle Raid, the Japanese killed a quarter of a million Chinese in retaliation.
War can be quite easily justified as there are truly evil people in the world, particularly those in power. But the lesson everyone should keep in their hearts is that while the cause may be noble, war is still a terrible thing even if waging it, is the right thing to do.

And the Terminal, the Clyne Faction, and the Three Ships Alliance themselves are all non governmental organizations dedicated to pacifism, freedom, justice, and self defense. I note you left out ww2 on your war analysis.
I love Miyazaki, but at the end of day 'war bad' isnt an adequate hypothisis when someone wants to do things to your people. I'm not saying its good- but I am saying occasionally the alternative is much worse. People will choose destruction over oblivion. And while, yes, recent wars may not have been so humanitarian in their vision, other wars were. Sometimes if you dont stop someone they dont stop themselves. Sometimes senseless destruction is *going* to happen and your only choice is how much it effects your people.
Are we at that point? On that I'm not so sure. I sure hope not. I dont *like* war, I dont think it should be pursued unnessisarily, and I dont think we need to be world cops (usa, I mean) because... well. Who are we to do that? But I do think its a mistake, to pretend the military is always the bad guy. In ww2, they saved a lot of lives. Military action, I belive, was what ended Japanese atrocities in China, for instance as well as more famous examples. And acting like that didnt happen is in no one's service.
Now, was that the intent of military action in that war? No. At least not at first. By all accounts, much of ww2 started with the intent of 'hurt the people who hurt us' but they still saved lives.
Nausica of the Valley of the Wind is a particularly interesting entry in the Ghibli library because its message is almoast the polar opposite of the book its supposedly based on. In the end, the book version of Nausicaa decides to comit what can only be described as an atrocity in the hope of protecting her people. Its not a very happy ending, and I understand why Ghibli cut off the story at the point where a different lesson could be learned. That said, Ghibli is, or should be, well known for what it does to source material. At the same time, until some alternative is available, is being a monster what enables others to survive in peace?
I dont know. I just dont pretend that fighting is never needful. And, in suggesting it shouldnt be done and providing no alternatives, I find your words here distasteful. Say perhaps "we should not get involved in overseas wars that dont involve us" if that is what you mean. I could get behind that. Or "war for purposes of economic growth or aquisition of resources is very bad" I could understand and back up.That would have a very solid point. How about "every ecanomic and social tool to avoid human death should be used before starting any conflict"? That seems ethically sound. But just 'war bad'? Historically, war is how you protect your people from monsters. Sometimes its the only tool to that end that works.
I generally expect something a bit more solid from you.

Miyazaki definitely formed my teen and early adulthood views on war and pacifism. Oddly enough it took going to actual war to break. I've seen that it is in all of us to become monsters without war and war is the only True answer to a monster. Yes, many will lie to you that this person/ people is/ are monster/s but that doesn't change the very true fact that humans are capable of becoming monster all their own. And for very little reason really. Self preservation is a human right. Miyazaki's thoughts that love would cure or that war is the source of these once human monster is as you've stated one drenched in the environment that would create those monsters blinding him to the fact that even if you could remove violence and war from humanity you'd still have monsters just no way of ever stopping them. You focus on the cost of wars but fail to understand that many of our modern wars aren't fought to deal with these monsters but support them. This I do object to but sadly many including yourself have demoralized any whom even have the faintest desire of striking the true beast for you make it distasteful. Choosing pacifism isn't choosing its forcing someone else to carry that burden for you. The world lacks in any real responsibility. To say war isn't likely to be justifiable because unjust wars happen is liken to saying that all tade is theft because some are scams. Small-minded and short-term assurance is all you get from it.
I wish I could return to the blissful ignorance you boldly hold.

Pacifism is an umbrella term that encapsulates a lot of views that are critical of violent conflict and war. It opposes war and violence as means to settle a dispute. It has nothing to do with being passive or submissive. And even if it raises several and complex ethical questions pacifism accommodates the idea of killing in certain scenarios, like self defense.
Like if you were in a heated argument with someone in the street a pacifist would seek every opportunity to deescalate and cool things off. A pacifist would not be the first to throw punches, but would defend himself and others if the need arises.
