We won't lie; most of the work we do on renovating historic homes is drudgery. Truthfully, we can't think of any of it that is actually FUN while we are doing it. Most of it is just hard, sweaty, hot, and often dangerous. The project we are working on now is no exception, and it may in fact be the worst one ever. We are stripping this old girl of 200 years of paint. Yes, it's as bad as it sounds. Two HUNDRED years of paint have turned this sanded, textured, stucco finish into a smoothed out blur of the original. It's a lot like those weird filters people use on social media, and just like with those filters, this girl will look way better au natural.
Come along with us as we start this absolutely monumental task, as well as catch up with wonder carpenter John Cooper as he continues to amaze with his skills. We keep working on the Love Shack to get it's details finished, and get a peek of the first steps of the electrical work! Laine is going to take you through the "do's and don'ts" of dealing with historic exterior materials, and you'll see what this old gal is gonna look like when she's all gussied up again!
There is a lot going on in the world right now. Take some time and care for your fellow man, then escape into the world of historic home restoration with us for an hour. Trust us; the real world will still be there when this video is over!

I am in one of those communities in need, tho my need is far less than most others. Thanks for acknowledging our plight and the lack of... fairness in reporting of it. We here in WNC are doing what we can for our neighbors and are grateful for all the help we are getting from FEMA and all the private orgs. who are doing amazing work here.

Seeing the original color of the front-in-front-of-front-most-fronted façade really is like a tantalizingly colorful archeological find. The amount of staggering detail in knowledge, experience and subsequent expertise…and Southern charm and hospitality to boot is overwhelming to me! I know it sounds like I’m simping, but I also kind of am, but it’s too bad Laine and Kevin can’t restore ALL historic structures throughout the U.S. in need of love and care. But this a restoration…NATION, after all!! Restoring Hope really does bring hope to my own furniture restoration efforts…and overall life efforts. You know. It’s all a rich metaphoric tapestry as well.

I can tell you right now. I'm going down the rabbit hole of mimicking marble with a blush wash. That sounds beautiful. Can you imagine when the house was new and how it would look in early evening light. We have the Galvez Hotel down here in Galveston and it was originally pink also. Thank goodness the new owners researched the original colors and returned it to that wonderful pinky coral blush. At sunset it takes on a glow all it's own. So Hope must have been magnificent, riding up to the home for a dinner or Christmas celebration. Thank you for preserving her properly. I know it's so much painstaking work, but it's a treasure that will never come again. Thanks for a great video.

I've gone down 4 US jeans sizes, 25lbs & 22 total inches since Feb. I have a spinal disability that caused weight gain. Though I'm physically incapable of a lot of exercises, I have found a diet that works for me & has given me great results. I haven't felt this good & this comfortable in my own body in a long time! I commend you on your achievements! Nothing tastes as good as being healthy feels. The only downside is the amount of clothes I'm going through from Goodwill! Seems like every month I need smaller clothes!

My son was just like you. Cinnamon rolls were his life. I think he inherited the sugar gene from me so I gave him a pass on it. 12 months ago we discovered he was gluten intolerant. He's gone from a tight 34 to a comfortable 30. He is eating more protein, fruits, and vegetables. He feels SO much better. Of course not having the "good stuff" in the house hasn't hurt me either. Let it be known the gluten free products taste pretty good and he is not feeling deprived. We have GMOed ourselves into what we are today.

Laine, I had a wakeup call in 2021 and won 3 stents in my heart. I have lost 40lbs doing exactly what you said had helped you. Also dropped my Hemoglobin AIC. That level was borderline, and my cholesterol is really good. It is amazing how much more energy you have when you aren't vacillating up and down with sugar highs and lows. Hope you continue to regain your health and keep working on the projects that are your passion. Congrats!

I was worried about you two and your homes when I saw the Hurricane Helene footage on the news. Just awful damage, across so many states and communities. Glad you are ok, and able to gather support for others less fortunate. You do look great, Laine, though you are always beautiful; spunky and bright as well. You make me laugh. In Jr. High I was obsessed with King Tut, Vikings, and Stonehenge. Would have loved being archeology nerds with you. Between May of 2003 and Feb of 2004 we had two 1931 Spanish style houses, four mortgages, and a ton of restoration work besides our two full time jobs. We ate hot dogs and grocery store potato salad, take out hamburgers, Mexican food, Pad Thai, pizza, and lots of Kentucky Fried Chicken. KFC was the last fast food place to close at 11:30 pm on Sunday night, when we were too full of paint and other yuck to venture inside a Denny's. I don't think I could eat like that now, but I get how hard it is to contemplate actually cooking, or even shopping for food while doing what you do. Plus you still make time to film those great house tours for us. You are indeed blessed with your wonderful carpenter. So fascinating to see how those columns are made. Our first home was a 1925 bungalow with 2 Doric columns supporting the front porch. Love them. I used to wrap wide red ribbon around them like candy canes at Christmas. The stone walkway looks wonderful, and while you are subcontracting out certain jobs, everything you are doing makes sense. It's so easy to think you can do it all, but you don't want to burn out or suffer an injury. Always enjoy your porch chats. :)

In addition to your wonderful videos, I also like Les Jeromes, who are restoring a stone mansion in France, and Old Schoolhouse, who are restoring an old elementary school in Indiana into a modern home. These other channels also say some of what you do, at least in regards to cleaning and finishing brick and stone and mortar. One thing you all have in common is the need to moisten the brick, stone, or stucco before applying a wet coat on top of it. It makes sense, and I'm glad to have learned that. I also understand about your new diet, since I have similar issues. I do wish you had shown the entire finished driveway and cottage yard, but I'm sure you will in the next video! Thank you for the update. Looking forward to the next one!

You guys are so kind and great. We have friends living very near the most devastated areas, where they have family they finally found. They say the Gov. response has been great...Pres & VP have been several times to see it firsthand & give anything they need, but (the affected citizens) they say they'll need more water, food and shelter long term, for everyone, including people coming in to help. If you think about it, when treatment plants are damaged or destroyed, and wells possibly fouled, it's a dangerous situation. Then, in many areas, where they want to get power back, they're having to hand dig because of underground gas and utility lines that they can no longer locate. It's taking about 2 hours to hand dig and get a pole up! God bless all the people living through this horror and all the people going in to assist. People could use those solar generators of yours. I love the curved walk and the new driveway...it's only a little more cost and adds so much charm compared to just a straight sidewalk. You both look fantastic and I loved seeing all the stages of the exterior finish, especially the faux pink marble:)

Thanks you for what you did and that mean comments thatcomments aren’t helping. I would’ve helped, but I never got the message.

Good for you. I think you looked amazing before. The important thing is you are focusing on health. In my case I got diagnosed with breast cancer and had to go through chemo and radiation and surgeries and the chemo drugs rotted my teeth so bad I couldn't bite or chew so basically lived on liquid and puree diet and lost 75 pounds in about 14 months.

Gotta' say it. I know you said grilled chicken and grilled fish. I love your accent, but what i heard at first was girl chicken and girl fish. Before my brain translated that to grilled, I was thinking, Lane is the most feminine female I have ever known. She even has to eat girl meat. Lololol!

Hi guys, question: with the rails on the balcony, does the height have to be altered to bring it up to current code but still looking like the original or do they get made to historical height but access is prevented, so people don't go over? Or is it an illusion that they weren't as high as they would now be?

They are (and were) 36”, which is current code. However, had they not been, historic integrity trumps current code in these instances. Were it 33” originally it would have to go back to 33” now, and there would be no restrictions on access.

Drywall compound can't get wet. Hints the name - DRYwall. Probably not great for exterior walls. Got to wonder what people were thinking. I guess they weren't.
