This beautiful video made me nostalgic . . . . I had been to this place in 1987 when i was in 12th class . . . . Would come again with my family now . . . .
Nostalgic trip through you, thank you. Did this trekk more than 14 times, but still yarns for more. Twice I took my children when they were of 5 yrs each. My first visit was during the Gorkhaland agitation time, the agitators burned down a couple of tourist bungalows there. Those were difficult times and we were not disturbed by anyone but checking by locals were common. I have only once went to Sandakphu on Land Rover, that too in recent times. Before it was used only to carry goods or the sick. In my trekking life I have seen the infrastructures on the trek growing. Even the presence of the SSB is increasing day by day since at one time there were non. Yes, I can still smell the clean air and the sweet smells of the big pine trees. And only once enjoyed the pleasure of having a grand clear view of the mighty mountain Kanchenjunga.

This video reminds me of my trekking to Sandakpu...I studied in a college there...we trekked all the way from MANIBHANJAN to Sandakpu....we started early in the morning and reached by evening. It was very adventurous..I will never forget that trip... especially the beautiful scenery and hectic trekking.
@@samiersamier8889 yes...early in the morning at 4 a.m. we set off...reached around 6 pm...we were college students...and used to long walks in the hills for almost 4 years
Did the trek back in 1995 as a 15 year old studying in Darjeeling. It was a very different magical place back then. Motor cars were hardly visible on the trek. Land Rovers were still very pervasive in the entire hill district though being quickly replaced by the Mahindra Commander Jeeps. Borders were not as clearly demarcated on the trek route as today and the locals were largely confused as to which side of the border they were based. Locals in Meghma actually claimed that it was Nepal. Border guards were non existent.
sorry to say that lots of places in Sandakphu or Sandakpur have been captured by India using the forces and threatening the local people in Nepal. There were conflicts in the past too regarding the border issue. There is a hill in Nepal side where from the visuals of the entire area is visible most distinctly. In fact it is the only place where from Tourists can catch a glimpse of the surrounding Mountains including the peak of the Everest. Indian security force even tried to capture that portion of the territory of Nepal in the year 2002. But their attempt was not successful. We had to talk to the Central government of India and that is how Indians stopped claiming that those portions are Indian territory. Indian side don't want the best portion to fall under the control of Nepal as global tourists don't have other choices rather than visiting Nepal side. Similar problem is there in Panchtar district of Nepal bordering Darjeeling, Sikkim and Nepal. The name of the place is called TIN SIMANA meaning: Three Borders of three different countries Nepal, Sikkim and British India. (YOU MAY CHECK IT IN RUclips) Here too, Indian side tried to capture Nepal's territory because the best visual portion lies in Nepal side and Indian tourists enter Nepal side to catch the view of mountains which is more beautiful than you have in Sandakphu because here, the mountains come to the eye level. Whereas in Sandaphu, you see mountains bit lower to the eye level. So....... its bitter in taste but its True.
The best time to view Mt. Kanchenjungha and all the four other highest peaks including Mt. Everest from Sandakphu view point is from 5 am to 9 am, during the time of sunrise. The sunlight falls in the laps of Kanchenjungha reflecting golden snow is a treat to the eyes. After 10 am, the peaks starts to get covered with fog and clouds. Happy Adventure!
I saw these land rovers running in Darjeeling nearly 40 years ago when i was a kid. had a chance to ride these also. what a great joy to see these masterpieces running today also. immensely enjoyable episode.
We, the team of two champs, only did the treak from Manebhanjan to Sandakphu in 1998 and then to Rimbik via Srikhola. That was a mystic journey. Only a very house there. It was such a lovely journey mesmerizing me even today.
I trekked in the year 1994. There were only a few local residents who helped us for night stay. It was a nice memory. After seeing your blog feeling nostalgic.

I trekked to Sandakphu from Manebhanjan, total 32 km, 20 years ago ! At Sandakphu, the weather was extremely clear, and i could watch what i made me speechless! Kanchanjungha from its base with snow Covered all its sister peaks and Mt Everest farther away !

Roads look much better now. Our trek route - Maneybhanjan- Chitrey- Meghma- Tumling- kalpokhri- Sandakphu- Gurdum- Sirikhola- Rimbik. Most memorable. Thanks for the video & bringing back the nostalgia of my debut trek.
We first trekked to 'Sandakfu' from 'Manebhanjan' in the year 1984 (October), now it is beautiful jeepable road. Very very cold that time but we were fortunate enough to get beautiful weather. Sometimes it appeared that were trekking above the cloud. In 'Sandakfu' we stayed in PWD guest house for two days and ate whatever we carried with us. Mesmerizing Rhododendrons and all around the scenic beauties were simply awesome. The change of colors of mighty Kangchenjunga at the pre-dawn hours were magical.
