Growing up with I-94 literally in my backyard, I fucking LOVE the sound of jakes
Do you have the link of the last one?
SO THIS is what I’ve been hearing all of my life in the distance at night. Finally inner peace
It’s oddly comforting
😂😂😂
And mourning dove as the sun rises 🥺
Love that sound in the distance at 3am getting up to piss
it wasn't satan
Used it for about 6 miles coasting downhill in Pennsylvania the other day, smiling the whole time
You were on 7mile moutian!!! I know that trip to well
@@peteykunes7630 I drive in Michigan/Indiana/Ohio and it’s mostly flat so that was new to me
@@blauer2551 I have a old 7.3idi 5speed an I went down with the trailer one day an threw in it 3rd. Sounded just like the Jake's. Had people confused as all hell. But I love it.
So? You want a Nobel Prize?
Naw Im just playing thats cool.
@@kevindelgado7252 I’ll take it, doesn’t $500,000 go to the recipient as well? The category could be mechanical sound induced smile.
For those of you who are wondering how Jake brakes work, I'll try to explain in simplest form. When the Jake brakes are activated.. the exhaust valves are kept open. It turns the engine into a big loud air compressor. The force needed to compress the air out through the kept open exhaust valves is what slows the truck down.
not quite; activating the jake brake opens the exhaust valves but that just allows all the compression to escape and therefore it can't turn the crankshaft anymore, resulting in a slow-down
@@CB-el3sv i gotchu, but i think youre missing the key word in the name which is compression *release* brake.
The engine slows down because all the compression in the cylinders is vented (see: released) to the atmosphere. I think you have the spirit of the answer right but im fairly certain its just a bit off.
Sorry if im sounding condescending btw
It doesn’t keep the exhaust valves open through the whole compression cycle, just opens them right when the “bang” would normally happen. So the engine has to do the work of compressing the air but doesn’t get the push back on the cylinder from the compressed air, at least that’s my understanding of it.
I'm glad everyone here knows how they work. I tried to explain it in the simplest way possible so that people who had no idea how they work could understand it.
Normal Diesel engines don’t have a butterfly valve on the intake, like a gas engine does. So when you let off the accelerator, even with no fuel being supplied to the engine and causing a detonation, a Diesel engine still compresses the air in the cylinder which is transferred to the crankshaft as energy, which causes little to no engine braking. So a Jake brake causes the exhaust valves to open very near TDC, which releases the compressed air in the cylinder to the atmosphere(out the exhaust system). It turns a Diesel engine effectively into an air compressor.
I remember popping my Jakes going through a tunnel... was second greatest sound my truck made. First was when the flex pipe came off right at the turbo, but I had the music up and was cruising. Got to my exit, came off of cruise, and the Jakes kicked on, and my hood flexed with each pop... scared the shit out of me, I thought the engine was coming out!

Very important to release right before top dead center to avoid a run away 🤔😂
When I was a kid 50 years ago now my family would travel from Southern California to Northern California almost every summer to see family or to go to Yosemite. I loved walking through the truck stops listening to the sound of the engines idling, scared that one would come after me, I had seen the movie "Duel". I loved the smell of the diesel exhaust back then, it's not the same now. On one trip we stopped at the top of the Grapevine in the turnout. TO GET SOME SLEEP!? One jake brake after another. Loved it!!
Did the same trip many times. The grape vine back in the fifties. The state had water fountains so people could refill their radiators and also get a drink for themselves. The climb in various parts of THE VINE was brutal, same with the down grades going down. Lots of them were 6 degrees or more and many had run away truck ramps. The uphill pace was so slow back in the day that the drivers would often step out of the cab and ride the running board just to cool off especially in summer. Jake brakes were common as were the jimmy diesels with the blowers, what a sweet sound that made.
@@timmayer8723 For me it was the 60's.
I remember overheating and having to sit by the side of the road what seemed like days. One time we had to get water from a irrigation ditch in Dixie paper cups and towels because everything was full of food and drink since we were on our way.
That may have been the same trip all out suitcases that were tied on top of the station wagon came loose and all our and cousins clothes went flying all over the interstate. My Uncle Jack always carried a bag of water hanging in front of the grill of his truck. We always took route 99 back then and we always stopped at Lyle's Truck Stop in Tulare, CA.
Just recently I talk to my cousin that was the only thing to a brother I had. We are the age of the Grandparents back then and my kids are the age our parents were. One trip home I will never remember we listened to congress taking roll call vote to impeach Pres. Nixon. Later after we were home I saw him board Marine 1 for the last time. Really something the things that stick with us.
deisel exhaust and the fuel itself doesnt smell the same at all. these days it smells toxic, like as toxic as all the hippies want us to think it is, (they want it to be as toxic as plutonium, it is not.) all the good stuff is gone . we have only memories.
i love reading stories like these. thank youu
The DEF makes the exhaust smell bad now. Today's Cummins exhaust smells like vinegar and I hate it
3:47 I’m not sure which sound I like better…the turbo or the Jake’s. I’m leaning towards turbo.
Turbo hands down lol

You must be a weirdo! How can you not like a jake brake sound?
My granddad taught me how to drive all the way back in the 70s and 80s. He said “Son, you lay down on that Jake every god damn chance you get!” Damn right.
Mannn!! Everybody needs a grandfather like yours!👊🏻 i never got to see my grandfather, he was also a trucker, a big time trucker!! Love From INDIA my dude💪🏻❤
I don’t know which I like more, the Jake brakes or the Cabovers in the video…
At work a couple of the rigs are older freightliners with Detroit 60s. I enjoy driving those because they have that old school diesel sound, I like hearing the turbo slowly spool up. And the Jake brake sounds amazing of course. First time I flipped it on I was grinning like a child lol
We stopped at a pullout-overlook area on the way through the Black Hills going to Yellowstone a few years back. Lots of trees, lots of logging trucks running that mountain we were on. Stood there for over an hour just enjoying the sound of those big loads climbing and running Jakes on that grade. Just the sweetest truck music with a beautiful view to go with it.
My neighbor drives a Kenworth W900 and uses that jake brake coming in, I always look forward to hearing that at the end of the day.
It's cool and all fun for a minute. but after a few hundred miles I like my mufflers.
The Jakes are vented to the air. Hence the noise. It's done on purpose.......you also do not have to use the exhaust brake to slow down. Unless your preference is to buy new brake pads or use the ramps, to each his own I suppose.
@@DickShooter There's no reason why you wouldn't be able to use mufflers in the exhaust and still have the braking force of the Jake

@Saul_badman hahaha hilarious the yank tank at Rektumtaucher im ded
What's louder, my Jake's, or, me stopping the truck in your living room?

If you need jakes in a town/city, you’re driving too fast in the first place.
@@josephmcgahee7302 you should see Utah...major industrial sections, accessed, through neighborhoods. No joke...
If you see the sign and end up getting a ticket and most likely a full DOT inspection that's on you.
You guys, obviously, don't know about me and rules...
Gotta love sound of yourself taking a shit
That last POV one was the sweetest sounding turbo and jake you could want.
I could listen to this all day.
I like hearing the Jake in between acceleration shifts
I love the Jake. Screw the town's that prohibit Jakes. Can't take all the fun out of trucking. Sure isn't the same as the old days when you could talk on the radio miles away from home.
My friend sold his house cause the new neighbors complained about his truck weekly to local police. They had been there 15 years then moved cause of the neighbors. It was a shame
@mississippi revolt yup nice family to but he would come home few nights a week late and they always bitched he just drove it normal. Or when coming home from a long haul after a week or so.
Always a disgruntled neighbor no matter where you live. People are not neighborly anymore. I lived on 40 acres and had a bitch for a neighbor. Now I live in the hood, lol and nobody bothers me
@@stilltrucking3070 That's awesome. My neighbors here are cool we all get along but last place I lived they would leave notes on my truck cause I went to work 5am and my pickup truck I guess woke some people up I lived in a townhouse community with a buddy I hated it.
To me, my Jake is a safety feature of the truck. Some kid runs out or something at least when I let off the gas I'm already in motion to slow down.
Jake brakes are pure music to my ears.
The rev matching at 2:35 is next level, that sounds so good!
Probably an automatic transmission
I'd put my bet on it being a synchron-clutch manual. It doesn't need rev matching
Thats in South Africa
I love that when your Bob tail and you use the Jake that is so stupid makes me laugh LMAO
I do it, BUT don’t use the high setting.
Save the brakes for when they are really needed.
The less they are used, the longer they last. Extra couple of days of revenue, extra safety for motorists and me.
Maybe you should save the Jakes for when you really need them. They weren't designed for use in parking lots.
@@gregoryhodge9452 specifically the truck stop parking lots. Otherwise I say go ham!
They're designed to release compression creating an engine brake used to maintain or slow vehicle speed with minimal use of service brakes... how does that exclude parking lots or running bobtail?
Not saying to do it all the time no matter what.... buuut technically one's not incorrectly using it in a parking lot or runnin bobtail just because it's something you don't like or find stupid.
Boss had a 99 freightliner with the isx signature 600 & 7 inch straights, that fucker was LOUD!!!!
Isx has the loudest jakes. Sounds like shotguns firing out if the pipes
Jakes are loud, but they're infinitely more quite than the sound of my truck crashing through a bunch of cars and into your house.
Funny ?
@DucknCoverin read between the lines, champ. I drive in a mountainous area, and I ignore the "Engine Brakes Prohibited" sign all the time. Why? Because when I'm driving down a mountain, or really steep hill (both are surrounded by houses) and the truck weighs tens of thousands kilograms, the sound of a Jake is far more preferable.
I love the sound of jake brakes in the morning!
Yeah but maybe not too early

I’ll never forget the moment while I was at work delivering packages for Amazon in Hialeah Florida. I was in a neighborhood on a bright hot sunny day and I hear the monstrous engine in a distant behind me, the crackling and loud noises from a man made machine, I turn around and there I see it, there she is, a white long nosed peterbuilt, all white even the rims, and the 32 foot tail behind it. Those were ok. The driver in the all black Pete and black trl definitely knew how to jake shift. But that poor guy in the green day cab, was trying but just couldnt get it right. Keep trying driver, you'll get it "eventually ". You know you got it when you chirp the jake, not let it actually go in.
Why would you put the J on for upshifting?
@@twointhepinkoneinthestink faster shifting
Freightliner
@@adderaala that is the most insane thing I've every heard.
@@adderaala wouldn't you need a specific setting like, JUST for that? I've driven many trucks, some the Jake comes on with the pedal, some have a delay off the throttle but very few have the Jake as soon as the pedal is off. And it's nearly impossible to drive in traffic, let off and the bitch is at idle, maybe skipping shifts would work. Idk.
I love that sound
Music to my ears!!
Sounds awesome in the mountains
You can shift faster that way thus going through the gears quicker and theoretically saving some fuel. But I have to admit it does sound cool
They’re called jakes because they were invented by a company called Jacobs Vehicle System inc
Jakes only slow down the engine and that braking power is only applied to the rest of the vehicle when the clutch is engaged (clutch pedal released) when your clutch is disengaged (clutch pedal depressed) only the engine is being slowed and that lets you rev match faster. Therefore shifting faster, losing less speed while shifting, and saving fuel.
Fun fact Jake brakes do not use any fuel at all.
Edit
Fun fact two, some modern trucks with automated transmissions also use engine braking to be able to shift quicker.
Also edited for clarity.
I can make a video explaining some of these things if people happen to be interested.
These guys are using the Jake to bring down the rpm of the motor quickly to shift quicker while floating through the gears (shifting without the clutch). The downside is it does slow the truck down a little between gears. If they were to just stay on the throttle slightly between gears it wouldn't engage but they would have to wait slightly longer to shift while maintaining their speed. 6 to one, half a dozen to the other.
@@bobwilliams3502 I'm a mechanic so not as good at it as our drivers but they go threw gears quicker all you hear is wruup, wruup, wruup, wruup no long pause inbetween when shifting just the engine pulling. I got the impression a lot of these guys were low hours showing off.....lots of room to improve.
U r rite on dom. Jake on upshifting is a rookie hot shot trick and shows stupidity. But that's normal now

I like N14 Jake brake sound the best and then c15 Cat . I’ve never heard a KTA600 Jake brake . I think Cummins should have kept making the N14 and adapted newer tech to it like they do the K series . I don’t think the ISX is as good as an N series .
Us mechanics don't much care for the ISX. The newerQSX 15 is a much better design. That old N-14 was a good engine but it had it's share of problems. And all the 855 based engines are a PITA to change an air compressor on.
@@michaelvrooman5681 I've been a diesel mechanic for 20 years N14 and 855 Cummins are my absolute favorite engines to work on . I learned in big cams and I love them .

Why would you put a exhaust beside a fuel tank 🤔
Diesel fuel requires a lot of heat so it won't catch on fire from the exhaust
