Milou - Papa Doc attended the University of Haiti - and graduated from the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor - on a scholarship that was meant to train Black doctors from the Caribbean to take care of African American servicemen during World War II.

I had a cuban teacher for spanish in high school. She told us of her harrowing and narrow escape from Castro. Later, I moved to Miami and I had Haitian employees. They were kind, helpful, and the best America has to offer. Yes, I know it could be worse, because they have told me. But we are on the path to that. Make no mistake. Be vigilant and do your duty to prevent it, please. At least vote intelligently. Or just vote!

When I listened to your story I remembered when Eisenhower was in power, I know Charlemagne the God was not around. Trump wants to take us back in history far worse than when Eisenhower was there. Thank you, Milou, for what you’re doing. My first husband was from Colombia, and during the 70s he was in the guerrillas, against the government. He was able to escape to the US when he decided to leave, because they saw that as desertion and he would have been killed on sight. He often spoke about similar things that you are sharing and we need to hear them. We don’t want to live in a country where everyone is in fear. He passed in 2013, and I often think his story should have been told more. Thank you again for telling yours.

Thank you for concern for our democracy. The black community is extremely fragmented. Young vs old, educated vs less educated and the biggest divider: wealth. Although there are other contributing factors, I think the above are at the top. Charlemagne has an agenda and it isn’t in the best interest of our community. His platform and others like his that address politics usually give republicans a pass and bash democrats. They are responsible for their actions. I pray that their listeners ignore the political position being advocated.
Milou, thank you for telling your fascinating and harrowing story. Most of my great-grandparents and grandparents fled the pogroms in Russia/Ukraine; and my grandfather's parents escaped Hungary and, subsequently, Amsterdam right before the rise of the 3rd Reich. Your story and those of so many who emigrated here because of brutal dictatorships in their native countries need to be told over and over again. We, as subscribers, need to share your story with as many people as possible.
In 1975 I traveled to the former USSR with my grandfather. I was 18 and, admittedly, knew nothing. My grandfather had childhood friends in the Ukraine. There was so much fear of the KGB (yes, the same KGB that formed Putin) that the only way you could have a conversation with anyone was to speak only outdoors while walking and hope no one could hear you. After a month of that, I, literally, kissed the tarmac at O'Hare when we came back home. It's been over 40 years and I will never forget those experiences.
As for Charlamagne tha God (aka Lenard Larry McKelvy), he is ignorant to the truth because he has failed to do his own research and make his own decisions; and obviously has limited life experiences.
