I just want to tell you how much I appreciate that you don't edit out your mistakes or your process. I think alot of us often find ourselves in the trap of looking at well edited seamless videos of people composing with minimal error and compare it to our own process of bungling every phrase 10 times over till it's right and feel inferior but seeing someone consistently screw things up until a piece sounds excellent gives us hope.

You have such an amazing and humorous personality on camera, it makes watching you in this video seem like me embarking on a musical safari trip with you as the guide rather than watching a tutorial/review! Thank you for making 40 minutes of my usually boring day feel like an adventure.
Honestly this I discovered this channel by accident looking for some reviews for some Spitfire Audio stuff. It is literally like... A safari adventure for making music it's brilliant Like when he was doing game of thrones and he was in the forest and stuff 😂
I love how you added in bathrobe man! You're video is great just with the writing but you make it a joy to watch start to finish with your added extras!
Guy, I found your videos about a month ago and can't stop watching them. I'm learning music/music theory in general and I'm just beginning compositions/orchestrations of my own. You're a great inspiration!
I got Abbey Road One last weekend and it is absolutely amazing. The sound & Mic positions are amazing. I would tell new users of Spitfire products to probably start with this if they are not going with Albion One first. This Fits in nicely with my other Spitfire products. I have to take my hat off to Spitfire for this one.....Cheers. I do hope there will be updates or some additions to the library. Also thanks for the review of this product. I was on the fence but after watching your walk through I started to get the Spitfire shakes and brought it right after watching. Worth every penny especially getting it on sale.
What a gorgeous sound out of the box! Always so good to watch you work. I have BBCSO Core and was blown away with that, so it's good to know that this is the perfect compliment. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I have zero money at the moment so this kid-in-a-sweet-shop will have to wait, but it's definitely my next addition. Well done, Spitfire Audio!
The infectious enthusiasm of the sheer excitement in creating a score is worth the watching alone. I am not a composer, but do play the horn as a hobby, have a keen taste for music, love the gesture movie soundtracks and always wondered how it was done. Now I know. I'm captivated. thank you.
The room acoustics are a big part of it. Studio 1 has a distinctive sound. You can hear it if you compare the soundtracks of Return of the Jedi and Raiders of the Lost Ark. They were clearly recorded in the same space, and it sounds fantastic.
goddamn guy I LOVE you. seriously, you would think this is just a random comment passing by, but I am really inspired by you and your content and i could watch you make music all day.
Having worked in the studio for years I can appreciate the ambiance of these samples. Since I’m just beginning to study music again after a few decades away from it, my only confusion is which symphonic sample libraries to get, since you’ve previously stated that Albion One is a great general purpose library. Yet, from this video it would seem that Abbey Road One and BBC SO are an equally good combination. Also... how about reviewing Omnisphere for use in composition, or at least commenting on it in a video. Thanks again, Guy... a stellar and spot on video.
Guy, you are awesome. What I really like in your teachings, is how you always emphasize feeling. A lot of musicians today concentrate on robot like accuracy. Many producers today take all life out of a performance, by correcting everything to the point of destroying all of the human performance. You are such an inspiration. Thank you. I have learned a lot from you.
I look forward to Guy's videos more so than the Spitfire videos. I love your reviews and you haven't steered me wrong yet. I am getting the Spitfire sweats. This seems to be Spitfires new instant Orchestra. I need to get the BBCSO upgrade first before jumping on this.
One thing that constantly amazes me in Guy's videos: his (nearly) complete mastery of Cubase shortcuts. This forty minute musical arrangement would take me an entire day to do.
Dear GUY! I am a seasoned Composer with 27+ years of experience and I have to admit: You are the most entertaining figure on You tube for me and I tell you what: I also talk to my instruments when I load them up😏. I sometimes just watch a random video of yours to get into an inspiring mood to compose. Keep up the amazing work my friend. Greetings from Vancouver Canada
it seems to have that little je-ne-sais-quoi, that Albion had, a magical patina that inspires as you play. One for the collection I suspect. ... and great content as always Guy, love your spirit, all the best!
Just pre-ordered mine this morning but glad to see a run through from your point of view. Have a lot of trust in spitfire as I've been using them as my main libaries professionally now for 2 years. This is my first big purchase (above the €29 range) and it was a tie between this and Albion one or BBC but I believe I've made the right choice. The others can wait! Exciting stuff
Let us know how this compares. I’m just about to invest in the £29 packs, but was thinking whether it was worth waiting for a sale and jumping direct to Albion One, or now, this...
@@andyr3802 for sure go for the €29 packs. The latest, Intimate strings is truly a steal at the price. I love the sound of them and the commissions I get and use them on have the clients chuffed so you can do wonders with them. I used Albion a few times via friends and it's a step up so big hopes here. Will let you know. It's just on such a good price deal now I can't say no
As a German, my English is not that good. So I clicked on your previous videos relatively quickly. Since I had already pre-ordered Abbey Road One, I watched your video again yesterday and today. Abbey Road is probably ideal for me, as it will allow me to get results relatively quickly through the instrument groups and not have to record every single part. I was even more fascinated by your looseness and your humor. Still you are very efficient and I noticed some workflows. In any case, I'll watch your other videos now too! Many Thanks.
That giant horn swell heres what I'd do. Bounce it to a track, then *reverse it*, throw a really heavy reverb on it, bounce it again, and then re-reverse it. That'll give you a super dramatic and trippy swell, but also saw off a bit of the nastynesss at the peak.
I would imagine, Guy, that there are several types of folks that watch your videos. The ones that spend hours watching cat videos will most likely click the 35 minute mark to start watching anyway. They are like window shoppers, they look in the shop window, lick their lips peering at the assortment of cakes and confections, and then hurry away to go look at the puppy in the pet store window. They are mostly interested in the end product. There are many other types, I assume, but then there are those of us who are the creative types. We watch the entire video (especially) with all the "faffing about" because it's the creative process that interests us the most. For me, the most helpful parts of your videos is watching (and listening to) you working your way through a stumbling block. If all your videos were cut and dry, add part B to part A, here's part C and part D goes precisely here, and BOOM there's your piece in under three minutes, ... well I never would have subscribed to your channel. So ... *Faff on, Guy. It's why we enjoy spending time with you.*
Is it worth getting this and bbc core when bbc core only has 3 layers and it’s most likely we will get a new 5 layer abbey road individual instrument option?
These videos are just incredible Guy. Very inspiring... your enthusiasm is infectious and makes me want to get up and write some music!!! Thanks so much for the great vids!
I'm having so much fun listening to this. I've now got 2 fantastic ideas for how to get more inspiration for composing. ONE: watching videos of other people's composing sessions! TWO: Whoever said you literally need a video or film to compose to? We can just READ fairy stories etc over the top! Thanks ever so much! 😀
Keep up the good work Guy. Your recommendations on libraries that fit well together could maybe become a new thing when reviewing new libraries? All the best!
Have you ever considered releasing the files for some of the short bits you make on this channel? It could be really helpful for people learning, even if they have to use substitute plugins!
high quality samples - what more can one ask for? Great sounding samples. Quite realistic without having to add any reverb. Sampling as really come a long way. Spitfire - congratulations.
Guy you're the coolest guy on RUclips seriously... You are a great entertainer, musician, person... and you are hilarious man... This is my first video and I'm hooked....please make more.... Cheers
I like this sound better than the bbc orchestra ensembles. Was this live - I wonder why I'm not getting notifications. Love this. I always learn something from your videos. Thanks, Guy!
This is great! After got kids to bed, stayed myself at bed and started your stream, after you start playing the woods in about 5min I was inspired enough so left the bed, grabbed a beer, and played some woods for an hour (and did not spend time looking for new library haha) Lovely, thanks for inspiration
Curious what people think of ensemble vs. individual instrument samples? I feel like individual instruments give you the ability to build your own voice. The most interesting thing about abbey road one is the 5 dynamic layers, but I feel like using them ensemble as opposed to individual instruments makes everyone who uses it sound the same. Any one else think like this? I'm new to VO
I'll go as far as to say that I hate the fact Spitfire made this ensemble based. When you have this room and Spitfire's level of quality it's such a waste. It removes a vital part of orchestration, which (duh) is knowing the orchestra to the exacts.
WOW! Amazed at how my instincts of what to write next, parralelled yours (not same notes but general feel of what to write next). You are right, this library inspires composition. This library sounds great even on my internal speakers on my IMAC 27. If I wasn't broke from the Covid crap, I'd buy it immediately. Love your vids. Thanks for sharing your talent and experience with the libraries.
i very rarely actually use any of the plugins or libraries reviewed in these videos because i have a cheap pc that can't handle them, i just watch because I find Guy hilarious tbh
Fantastic to see so many positive comments about this library - there are some really nasty negative ones elsewhere. Looking forward to working with this and BBC SO Core together.
thank you so much. what this has taught me more than anything is that the instruments have to be used in the way they are in the orchestra - it might seem obvious to some - but I just remade this peice, pretty much note for note, and it's the most realistic thing i've ever done, which means it's not the software it's me. I can' t fix the software, but i can learn to fix my approach. thank you again! also i'm on a 6 year old macbook pro with 16 gig of ram and there's no glitching.
Love it, goofing around making music, nice to get a sense of it, much better way to preview a library than boring pre-recorded stuff. Magic of the moment is much batter
Thanks ever so much for the review Guy! Another great piece of music in just 40 minutes, my goodness. But here's a little hint: The stereo image of your RUclips videos is flipped 180°, we have the 1st Violins to the right, Basses to the left etc... not exactly bad, but it needs getting used to. 😁 Cheers Guy! 👏
Wonderful review Guy. Yes I have to agree that this will tie in nicely with the BBC SO. Best of both worlds really :-) The Abbey Road One sound is just stunning !!
Indeed a nice Library and always tempting because of your usual way of demonstrating and exploring libraries. But this time I'm in doubt to buy this or Audio Imperia Nucleus Full Version. I bought AI Nucleus Lite only a few days after I watched your video on it for a few times. Today I received a mail from Audio Imperia and they offer the crossgrade to the full version for only 179 $ (150 €). Halve the price of Road One. Would you recommend the Full Nucleus or wait and save up for Road One?
"Somewhere in the forest the princess is walking alone" - and here I am sitting in my bedroom, bobbing my head to the beat thinking - this princess is really walking for a long time. Oh! The sheer anticipation of what will happen next almost killed me in that moment 🤣🤣🤣
The review I was waiting for when I saw that Spitfire had dropped this >_> I'm so torn on this one. If it had the ensembles and the individual elements I'd be sold. Sketch out an idea and then go in and really set it all out with the same library/etc. But even the stuff coming for 2021 are just more ensembles. Brushes, pens, and pencils to add to your sketchpad, I suppose.
Guy Michelmore - Thanks for this fine video. I bought said software today - great stuff. Same problem I had two years ago in replacing less powerful symphony software. You see, using Ableton's 'entry' level (is it??) symphonic software I'd carefully worked out volumes, etc., and created quite a nice little piece. Abbey Road One is MUCH louder! So I have to redo all the volume cues but also the timbres are different on Woodwinds, Trumpets, etc. So what sounds like a coherent nice piece with fairly realistic instruments, correct velocities, timbres etc., in Ableton, is now quite bombastic in Abbey Road One. Not that this can't be adjusted. For example, the Ableton symphony being LESS capable, and far less realistic then the Spitfire ('Foundation') Orchestra, sits nicely. The Spitfire Symphony is Goldfinger on every piece. But, I'll hang in there and get that volume worked out. Any tips or suggestions - from anyone- appreciated! And bear in mind, if you've worked out something really nice using other symphonic software, it's not a give ,that you can just replace the 'Woodwinds' for example, you're using in your current software, with Spitfire Woodwinds and away you go.
It’s such a pleasure watching you work on this. I am currently building my own little home studio. I really REALLY need to start taking keyboard lessons. I feel dumb because this probably should have been the first thing I should have done many years ago. :P
I had just about decided on A1, but after seeing this review, I think I’ll be switching to AR1. Thanks, as always, for a great, information packed video!
Christian and Paul did announced that this Abby Road project will expand to a full all individual instruments project in the future so as beautiful as it sounds I would rather wait for that and just get the BBC
could you actually explain the mic positions of an orchestra please, i'm just starting to get into this kind of stuff but mostly i'm a rock guy... so... what does tree mean? and where is it positioned in a orchestral recording?
The decca tree are three microphones (one left, one center and one right) placed roughly above the conductor, they give you a precise sound and also the room. With the tree in samples libraries you already have every instrument panned as it would be in an orchestra so you dont have to do it manually. Cheers
Tree refers to the Decca Tree mic. It's basically three mics placed in a triangular position on a mic frame positioned just in front of where the conductor is. To keep it short, it's a good "in-between" between close mics and hall mics, providing a good amount of detail of the former while still capturing plenty of room sound. Basically if there's only one mic you're able to use, the tree will be your best option. You can read more here if you want more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decca_tree Hope that helps!
Hey Guy! You've been in Italy, in Umbria, where I'm living now and where the food quality is so high you can go anywhere, and it will probably be a surprise. It's the same with you, you can write anything, on any library, and you always surprise me! The typical effect is: Luca: "Oh... he's done this, then I would do that!" Guy: does something completly different and much better than what I've thought! Luca: "Oh crap..." I might propose you a cooking/music course exchange 😂😂😂
Guy, first, I have to say. I have been living at your channel here for the last few days. I can’t seem to pull myself away. Second, I have to ask. Does Abbey ONE have solo instruments? If not, how do you avoid that pipe organ effect when trying to play chords within a section? I’m sure you’ve addressed this, but as a newcomer to orchestral arranging, I’m still not getting it.
This really drives the point home. If you have great sample libraries or sounds in general, it’s far easier to get inspired quickly. Rather than spending time trying to find the perfect sounds.

Yes! And between this and Albion 1 because they are both ensemble libraries.
The difference is the amount of mics and some variations on the articulations given
Yes I'm interested too, although I already own BBCSO so I won't purchase this one ^^

That is what is exactly what is going on.
I agree, actual Spitfire demos are really boring
Thats really cool seeing what England is like. I had no idea you lived in England!
Great preview. Thanks.
Really inspired now to pick this up.
This library would be ideal for a bit of John Barry.... Love it!
Spitfire audio is awesome! It’s the best discovery of 2020 for me.
What a wonderful library.
Wonderful review Guy. Yes I have to agree that this will tie in nicely with the BBC SO. Best of both worlds really :-) The Abbey Road One sound is just stunning !!
You are an amazing teacher, great composer and inspiring personality. Please keep doing this :) Greetings from the Netherlands.
That's one of your best "off the top of your head" pieces. Also, love the shirt.
Thank you! rapanuiclothing.com/
Thanks for the run-through Guy very useful as always.
Excellent and Inspirational video, Guy. You are the most cheerful happiest composer I have ever witnessed during the compositional process.
DEFINITELY gonna get this! Absolutely nuts for a sample library
So love this library, its has a lovely warmth to it. Plus the tune you wrote is really epic,
I had just about decided on A1, but after seeing this review, I think I’ll be switching to AR1. Thanks, as always, for a great, information packed video!
When you accidentally write Batman music
Haha, I was thinking the same thing. Tim Burton in a can.
@@godisbollocks *Danny Elfman* in a can
very much makes me think of 2003 Hulk. (also Danny Elfman)
@@jamesdaniels8297 same!
it reminded me more of harry potter
Christian and Paul did announced that this Abby Road project will expand to a full all individual instruments project in the future so as beautiful as it sounds I would rather wait for that and just get the BBC
Wow! New to the channel, but loving your work. Love your passion and work. Thanks for sharing.
I may write a piece at 1 beat a minute now. I've got loads of time on my hands. Nice track. Good sound.
haha - the key to writing longer pieces - take the BPM way down! :)
when you played the first chord of the library. I got massive goose bumps omg so good
Here at 23:10 I'm totally lost in Protools. I don't know how you record automatically these little notes
Have I ever told you that you're a source of inspiration to amateurs like myself...? No? In that case, I just did. Stay awesome and keep inspiring!
Thank you

could you actually explain the mic positions of an orchestra please, i'm just starting to get into this kind of stuff but mostly i'm a rock guy... so... what does tree mean? and where is it positioned in a orchestral recording?
You can read more here if you want more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decca_tree
Hope that helps!
In the manual of BBC SO there's a map with some mics positions. These are particular to BBC SO, but in other libraries the positions are like that.
Hey Guy! You've been in Italy, in Umbria, where I'm living now and where the food quality is so high you can go anywhere, and it will probably be a surprise.
It's the same with you, you can write anything, on any library, and you always surprise me!
The typical effect is:
Luca: "Oh... he's done this, then I would do that!"
Guy: does something completly different and much better than what I've thought!
Luca: "Oh crap..."
I might propose you a cooking/music course exchange 😂😂😂
Also - I'd be interesting to know how Abby One blends with BBC SO library as well; thank you for doing this and sharing.
Got it pre-ordered. Thanks Guy!!
Thanks for the review Guy! :)

This really drives the point home. If you have great sample libraries or sounds in general, it’s far easier to get inspired quickly. Rather than spending time trying to find the perfect sounds.
