My husband and I stayed at The Brick a few years back without realizing it was on Hotel Hell. It was spooky as hell. Glad the chesterfield hotel is still going. They truly seemed like a sweet couple who was trying their best, but stuck in a sour spot and couldn't get out without help.
I miss this show a lot, I wish he would produce it again. as someone who is about to get their masters in hospitality it was always interesting to me to watch what caused the hotels struggles
I don't know why so many people think that managing a hotel is easy. I went to a hospitality/tourism high school and it was hard! There is so much nuance in the way of running hotels and even more in tourism in general. We had to go through a certain amount of hours working in a hotel as maids, servers and receptionists and none of it is easy to do, let alone to manage. I hated it, and instead of continuing my education in hospitality, I now have a masters in publishing and information science, because I knew that I would be bad at whatever work I would do in a hotel lol
When I first watched Hotel Chester, I nearly cried for those owners. They were genuinely good people struck by tragedy. And my heart almost dropped when you said that only 9/20 of the hotels were still running- I was relieved to see Hotel Chester being one of them.
i work for hilton as a receptionist and i’m telling you now that you absolutely should bring your own pillow and blanket no matter how nice the hotel is
just wanna add that, at least in Canada, a lot of Colleges group Hotel & Restaurant Management into one course and you learn about both because there is a big cross over in the industries. Adding onto that, I took one of these courses and people actually in the industry value experience far more than schooling when you look to work in these places. I think his experiences from working and traveling would be a huge benefit to him being able to help, sure he's light on some things but would probably know more than people who went to school for this stuff.
2 of the standouts from this series imo were the four seasons hotel and hotel Chester (the one with the Asian lady cooking sushi). Both of those owners were good people who took Gordon's suggestions to heart and both hotels are still open til those day which is awesome
Actually, I hate to say it but unfortunately layla's riverside lodge was recently sold after the owner suffered a heart attack and reasonably wants a more chill life. Still, surviving 8 years after the show is great
@@tinytimtam damn, that sucks but understandable. Least he was able to turn it around and make a profit and was able to sell when he didn't want to continue operating it instead of the place being foreclosed on
One of the biggest reasons the Hotel Chester story gets to me is because the hotel is located in the state I was born and raised in. Not a lot of people think good things when the state is mentioned, so I appreciate and celebrate every little win I find that happens to people who are from or live in that state.
Honestly, most of the hotels on Hotel Hell are just a hair below the quality of your average hotel that's never been on the show. I swear, most properties out there are held together by chewing gum and tape.
hi gabi, I live in the area of the harpers ferry episode and went to middle and high school with a kid who worked at the hotel . He was on the show so i can confirm they are somewhat real but he was the type of dude to play up a situation and make it worse, perfect for reality tv. he can be seen chasing after gordon and shouting his name, when gordon is storming off in the episode. anyways great video, ily girl stay beautiful
I worked during the off season for a 5 star motel in the Colorado Mountains one winter. It was small and we had no restaurant. Even when there weren't guests there was still daily cleaning to be done, maintenance to be done, and every week a deep cleaning was done in every space and room. Then when we did have any guests a lot had to be done, even with just one room being rented out. These people trusted me access to their private space to do daily cleaning and turn overs without messing with their things. This lady hired me for the job and I'm amazed she trusted me to do it for her. I couldn't imagine the amount of trust I'd have to muster up just to have employees when managing a large hotel or motel and the coordinating that would need to be done. And then throw a restaurant into it... yeah, nope.
I remember the episode with the couple living in the hotel, it really showed who Gordan really is. He wasn't mean about anything, he didn't yell, he understood what the reality of the situation was and helped as much as he could.
I am by no means a professional(only basics of food and beverage management and was servsafe certified which doesn’t say much in the restaurant business anymore) but most things Gordon is seeking in the hotels are the basics that you are to keep an eye on in your dining rooms along with many a few other things that can be just passed off as common knowledge. Like you said these things can easily go unnoticed to the people who are in there often when there isn’t enough hands on deck or enough properly trained staff. It’s a very vague line it seems so yes he does help but definitely more in the way a friend who has own a plant for more then six months can help. They’ll be able to tell you basic care and needs of that plant but may not be able to tell you the knowledge of an person who has actually went to school for botany/herbalism. As you can tell my passion for food turned into plants, that’s why I haven’t care to renew my certification because I’m focused on learning plants so I can sell them as my job instead of working food again.
@@NagaokakyonoKatsumichi having knowledge and not real credibility that is on paper are two different things. He can give advice that goes wrong and can use the excuse “I’m not officially an advisor so you don’t have to take the advice I give.” That would be like saying I have credentials to tell people how to keep up on their restaurant because at one time long ago I worked in restaurants and was servesafe certified. I can still be wrong about something because it’s not my actual current line of work.

In the hospitality/tourism high school I went to, we had so many different subjects, from general politics and culture, basics of serving and plating, economics like bookkeeping, different types of tourism, hotel management, marketing etc because exactly like you said, all of those things are interconnected
I had an acne problem too for a while. The cause ended up being micro perspiration while I was sleeping. Once I set my thermostat to like 68 degrees instead of 72 at night, my face cleared up fast. Also, not washing my face IMMEDIATELY after exercise caused break outs. If sweat dries, expect a zit.

I actually went to one of the hotels featured on here. I'm not sure if it was before or after the fixing. I think before. It was in San Diego. Had all this fancy modern stuff that Gordan said made it look like a race car?? And a lot of use of greys and red. They had a dog ,which I remember playing with in the upstairs area with a little Jake the dog toy. And I remember Gordan called him ugly in the episode. I only skimmed the episode . The hotel from what I remember was just ok. We slept on air beds because they didn't have enough beds in a room for me and my sibling. Just for my parents. Don't remember having an issue w that though. What I do remember is that there was some bar outside . Or club . And they were loud..LOUD loud. And no matter what we did we couldn't quiet the noise. I dont think that's the hotels fault tho . Overall it was an OK stay but I was a kid and don't remember a lot
Ok so I used to live in Southbridge, MA where the Vienna was located, and I lived there at the time of filming. First of all, a little background on Southbridge: it’s an old mill town, very blue collar that’s had a couple of decades worth of bad luck and bad publicity, but it’s still a sweet little town with strong community. It just so happens to be the brunt of a lot of local jokes. It’s also right next to a very touristy, quaint historic “New Englandy” town called Sturbridge. Think Pawnee vs Eagleton in Parks and Rec. Now, I remember watching the episode and cracking up laughing because in order to make Southbridge look good they filmed the B roll in Sturbridge. I’ve spoken to several folks that worked at the Vienna and they said that the Swingers rumors were absolutely true lol. It seems like they exaggerated some things for TV, but everything that happened was more or less true. The owners also had a French bistro in town where they were notorious for refusing to give you butter to go on your bread because they found it insulting that you would need it? Or something equally as dumb. Regardless, they were at least as difficult if not more so than they were portrayed on TV. I think I heard there were some rumors that the reason the Vienna burned down was for insurance reasons, and possibly to do with funding the other restaurant. I have no way of verifying that last part, although it wouldn’t shock me.
Fun video! We were able to participate in the filming of the Cambridge Hotel (Upstate NY) episode. We ate at the restaurant before renovations. I had found out that the daughter of the owner was good friends with someone I know so I actually arranged to stay in a renovated room after he left and proposed to my now wife. We had a nice dinner in the restaurant, also supposedly home of pie a la mode, and enjoyed a weekend in a small town not far from home. Fun memory!

It could probably eliminate every plosive blowout in a video like this one in less than two minutes and alleviate the lack of pop filter.
I like Hotel Hell better than Kitchen Nightmares. There's less yelling and most of the owners aren't narcissists, they're just clueless and their stupidity is fun to watch. Like you said, I also have no idea what makes people think running a hotel is easy and that it can run itself when there's a degree in the field and a standard of cleanliness that needs to be met.
I feel like it’s kind of a skewed sample to begin with seeing as a prerequisite to even appearing on the show would presumably be that your hotel is already struggling… So similar to kitchen nightmares certain establishments might be too far gone to really recover or you might be dealing with stubborn proprietors who find themselves unable to commit to the changes and revert back to their old ways, etc etc etc, so without careful analysis it wouldn’t rly be fair to say that each failure carried the same weight or should count against the show in the same way… if that makes sense… So while I def get wanting to grade Gordon/the show on their efficacy/success rate, and while 45% would normally be considered a failing grade, in this instance I think it’s a lil more understandable…. But thas jus imo 🤷♀️ ** Ps- I haven’t made it thru the vid so I’m not even saying u didn’t take any of this into consideration, and I see already that you mentioned at least one of the closures was due to covid and another reverted back to their old ways, so perhaps my comment is totally unnecessary lol **
Its a show, they come in, get the job done and they are out. Its not their fault the owners keep digging their own hole and eventually close down. Is Gordon supposed to be responsible for all 40-50 hotels? Even he himself closed down one of his 5* restaurants which he mentions a few times in the show. Guy is not going to keep an eye out on owners after the episode is filmed.
your point about brining your own blanket and pillow angered me so much. Not because of anything you said but because I agree fully(partially because I have contamination OCD) and every time I try to actually bring my own blanket and pillows I get ridiculed by my family.
The Towns Inn survives because it isn’t a Hotel. It’s a communal inn type of place. It mostly caters to hikers coming into Harpers Ferry. They really only have 3 or so actual private rooms but they don’t include bathrooms. The restaurant is a separate business now
My wife and I love to watch all these types of shows, bar rescue, kitchen nightmares, etc. Not entirely sure why but we love em and love watching em together

at 6:19 there is a snippet if an episode that Gabi shows that was filmed inside of a rhode island restaurant. im from rhode island and while this may not seem like a big deal, it’s a very small state so everyone typically knows everyone and everything. before this episode even aired, I guess that woman was literally notorious for being extremely rude to customers and difficult to work with. I guess literally no one was surprised that she ended up on an episode of kitchen nightmares and her restaurant still didn’t make it. just an interesting little piece of info there
I'm addicted to Kitchen Nightmares and all that, and one thing that always gets me about the owners post-show interviews is like: *irish accent* what did you expect, darling? "Oh, the show portrayed the restaurant negativelly" have you not watched this show before? I mean, first season restaurants, sure, but from that point on, what did you expect fr? It's like going to Jeopardy and not expecting questions...
Hi! So, my childhood home is less than 5 minutes away from the Brick Hotel and while it IS still open, it's been under new management for many years. The original owner is still associated, but I think at this point she's nothing more than a landlord. The Brick Hotel is one of the best places to wine and dine in the area and you usually can only get in with a reservation. One of my good friends has worked there on and off for 3 years or so and she loves. The hotel aspect of it is sort of unknown because most of the people who go there are locals and right across the street there's another historic hotel where people would rather stay. I remember walking to high school and seeing Gordon's crew hanging out in front of the building and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. That's all!

One problem though. You know what else can be revealed by the same test? Soda. Dried up soda also shows up and it's not uncommon for cans to come out of the factory with traces of soda on the outside.
With the stain patterns it’s most likely other fluids, whitening agents and detergents look retry different under UV light
Unfortunately a lot of ppl don't realize but the hotel and the restaurant industry is actually VERY closely tight knit. In fact, in my state you need a Servsafe Manager certified person in each kitchen AND hotel
Many hotels mainly fancy historic hotels 🏨 have restaurants and/or bars
Who in the fuck doesn’t realise that hotels and restaurants are closely linked?
@@michaelgray4833 The most basic hotels don’t have restaurants like a comfort inn but the fancy historic hotels 🏨 do and yea honestly when I’ve traveled it was convenient having the restaurant at the hotel we stayed at

The episode about the Chester Hotel made me cry. I felt so bad for them, but especially Suki. She tried so hard to hold it together. I was so happy at the end and was even happier to hear they are doing so well.
Throwback to when I went to Iceland on a school trip and we saw Gordon Ramsey at a tomato greenhouse it was truly a pivotal moment in my life

When everyone else went to the museum or a pool for the end-of-the-year trip, they went to italy for 10 days. watching this show as a teenager made me so scared of hotels (in terms of germs, i'm already a huger germaphobe, for a while I wouldn't sleep under the covers or use the showers in ones I stayed in) but now my job is cleaning hotels and actually they're pretty okay. I don't really trust the kettle or spare blanket though. They barely get cleaned
Oh god ive seen the descaling processes of those kettles, also under the beds or behind if the beds are heavy are often disgusting.
I worked in a tourist complex that had hotel, motel, backpackers - maintenance Now whenever I stay in one I notice things that are done well or could be better. Things I wouldn't even care about before
Can we just mention that he’s carrying a briefcase as a representation of regular luggage that in no way, shape or form would fit his clothes? He did it for every single episode and that case wouldn’t even fit a shirt and a trouser. Also, look how he’s carrying the briefcase. Like if it was empty bending his wrist. HOW NO ONE NOTICED THIS?
Could you do an episode like this about Hotel Impossible? I loved that show and Anthony Melchiorri always replied my tweets so he deserves an episode.
I think I remember seeing him taking the bacteria measuring thing out of the briefcase
We do notice but we decided it's better to let him have his moment with it.
you can see when he opens it it's just the gadgets he's using to inspect the room this episode
it is possible to fold your clothes to a point where its small enough to fit in a small briefcase

My husband and I stayed at The Brick a few years back without realizing it was on Hotel Hell. It was spooky as hell. Also the owner had told us the resteraunt was closed so we ordered Dominos and waited outside, and she literally stood on the porch glaring at us the entire time we were out there?? Was just a really weird experience.
I’ll never forget the lady that shit all over the floors and everything. Her raw sewage made it so lethal on the monitor I thought Ramsay would break out a flame thrower

“He studied hotel management” “does that qualify him to tell others how to run a hotel”
Yes
I *loved* Hotel Hell! I wish they would bring it back or have done more episodes. There are PLENTY of hotels to “fix” for an hour lol
hi gabi, I live in the area of the harpers ferry episode and went to middle and high school with a kid who worked at the hotel . He was on the show so i can confirm they are somewhat real but he was the type of dude to play up a situation and make it worse, perfect for reality tv. he can be seen chasing after gordon and shouting his name, when gordon is storming off in the episode. anyways great video, ily girl stay beautiful
The kid the put himself in every room while they were filming?
@@xoluvp Yeah that kid. Came off as very disingenuous whenever he was on camera.
Bruh I thought he was a plant tbh
the original Gordon Ramsey video is what got me hooked to your channel...I'm glad I've come full circle on this channel. love u 🖤
Gordon is using knowledge he got from having a qualifications in this field of work.
He is helping in a professional way.
@@NagaokakyonoKatsumichi having knowledge and not real credibility that is on paper are two different things. He can give advice that goes wrong and can use the excuse “I’m not officially an advisor so you don’t have to take the advice I give.”
That would be like saying I have credentials to tell people how to keep up on their restaurant because at one time long ago I worked in restaurants and was servesafe certified. I can still be wrong about something because it’s not my actual current line of work.
@@mirasmiraculouscraftik this comment was from a while ago but gordon ramsey has a degree in hotel management so he does have the educational and practical experience
When my dad was in school for culinary arts, he and some of his classmates took up studies in hotel management at the suggestion of their instructors because a lot of the time those career skills can go hand in hand.
In the hospitality/tourism high school I went to, we had so many different subjects, from general politics and culture, basics of serving and plating, economics like bookkeeping, different types of tourism, hotel management, marketing etc because exactly like you said, all of those things are interconnected
Hotel Chester was one of the saddest episodes in the entire show. Some parts in that episode choke me up bad.
I never understand when they complain that they paint them in a bad light. They almost always make you look fantastic in the end. You've changed and now are super grateful and excited to run your business.
Binging your channel and then finding you just came out with a new video is a divine intervention
I went to college in Starkville, where Hotel Chester is. It’s honestly the coolest thing in town that Gordon put the words on the building
That Quaker lady who owned the hotel and would just shit herself randomly fucked me up bad because I knew someone like that

Fun memory!
Lmao I just watched this episode! How was the pie?
@@K8_bman it was good. As Gordon mentioned in the episode, this area has a really healthy apple harvest, so highlighting that for the restaurant that supposedly invented putting ice cream on pie is a no brainer!
omg the amount of people who have told me I should open a restaurant because I can cook. Like I don't do the finances, create the menu, ect. There is so much more to owning a business than the service being provided. And I don't want to handle all that stress lol

“Idk do you expect me to fact check thi- I did and I was correct” absolutely took me out 🤣 Gordon really can do any show at this point it seems lmfao

Your microphone fascinates me. The audio is so clear but it obviously needs a pop filter. Like it is so good and bad at the same time. Wild.
I'm very impressed by the quality of this video. Your style of narration and the level of research you do is makes for an incredibly interesting story.
As someone with a whole month of front desk experience at a Hilton Garden Inn, I think I’m fully capable of running a high-end luxury hotel completely on my own with no help whatsoever.

I’m so happy to hear that hotel Chester is doing well.
Hey Gabi, long-time watcher here, and sound editor. You're a musician, I'm sure you know what plosives are in sound editing (you have a pop filter on your home mic after all).
I just wanna suggest a lightweight but powerful audio editor like RX Elements that'd let you fix audio quickly on the go. It could probably eliminate every plosive blowout in a video like this one in less than two minutes and alleviate the lack of pop filter.
How is 24hrs to Hell not the weirdest show
He has a truck that transforms into a kitchen and goes undercover with full on disguises
He came to the Hotel Chester in my town, they’re still open and ALWAYS busy. I pass it almost everyday on my way to the gym.
another great video gabi! I love how passionate you are about whatever topic you’re covering. thank you for sharing your work with us! :)
You should also do a Deep Dive into ‘Bar Rescue, I’ve watched all seasons of it and there is more than enough content for you to go through.
I feel like it’s kind of a skewed sample to begin with seeing as a prerequisite to even appearing on the show would presumably be that your hotel is already struggling… So similar to kitchen nightmares certain establishments might be too far gone to really recover or you might be dealing with stubborn proprietors who find themselves unable to commit to the changes and revert back to their old ways, etc etc etc, so without careful analysis it wouldn’t rly be fair to say that each failure carried the same weight or should count against the show in the same way… if that makes sense…
So while I def get wanting to grade Gordon/the show on their efficacy/success rate, and while 45% would normally be considered a failing grade, in this instance I think it’s a lil more understandable…. But thas jus imo 🤷♀️
** Ps- I haven’t made it thru the vid so I’m not even saying u didn’t take any of this into consideration, and I see already that you mentioned at least one of the closures was due to covid and another reverted back to their old ways, so perhaps my comment is totally unnecessary lol **
11:14 trilled "d" in the way she says "Gordon" (sounds exactly like the "rr" in Spanish "Perro").
0:40 that is LITERALLY one of the microphones of all time gabi..
your point about brining your own blanket and pillow angered me so much.

The restaurant is a separate business now
My hometown was featured in an episode….it’s an assisted living home now.

at 6:19 there is a snippet if an episode that Gabi shows that was filmed inside of a rhode island restaurant. im from rhode island and while this may not seem like a big deal, it’s a very small state so everyone typically knows everyone and everything. before this episode even aired, I guess that woman was literally notorious for being extremely rude to customers and difficult to work with. I guess literally no one was surprised that she ended up on an episode of kitchen nightmares and her restaurant still didn’t make it. just an interesting little piece of info there

That's all!
