- Travelling by steam train is now not done by necessity but by choice. This excursion travels from the furthest point east at Lyttelton to the furthest point west at Greymouth and back again.
Our journey from coast to coast, starts at Christchurch in New Zealands South Island, crosses a wide plain and wends its way through steep mountain valleys before reaching the river port of Greymouth.
This trip was made possible in 1923 with the opening of the Otira Tunnel and is now considered one of the great train journeys of the world.
Our Ab class of locomotive were once mainstays on this line and with our engine Ab663 having been based in both Christchurch and Greymouth, it’s a living link with the regions past.
This DVD relives some of the romance of steam rail travel as can now be undertaken on one of the superbly restored vintage steam locomotives.
