- Everybody needs a door stop. Everybody needs practice. Here's a good exercise I occasionally do. Purposefully inserted lots of visual tips in this one.
If you are looking to learn to dovetail I have two techniques videos and one large instructional on the subject:
- Precise Hand Cut Dovetails: • Precise Hand Cut Dovet...
- No Measure Dovetails: • No Measure Dovetails
- Dovetails Demystified: • Dovetails Demystified ...
Oh, and if you think 2x12's and cinder blocks are perfectly acceptable bookshelves, you don't want to watch this simple build. (Sarcasm people, I'm Texan after all.)

Reminds me of one of my grandfather's old sayings that "a good carpenter (or woodworker!) knows how to cover his mistakes"... Nice project.
Shhhhh....
Knowing this channel I think we can all agree the " simple " part was tongue in cheeks. This is probably the most elaborate door stop design I have ever seen lol . I think the take way is supposed to be this type of project is a great way to cut your teeth on these type of techniques before attempting them on a " real project " because at the end of the day it is a door stop not a hi boy. I am defiantly making one of these my dove tails could sure use the practice as always thank you for the wonderful content you provide !
Ya, “simple” did draw some ire.
But " worth the effort "none the less there is a lot of lessons here for those paying attention thanks again
A simple door stop, it is. Skill level not so much. A great project for me to learn from! Thanks so much!
That's all it is, an exercise to learn with.
I liked it, seems like a stress-free way of practicing dovetails by hand
yep
Love the light-hearted approach!
Thanks
That's a fancy door stop with a nice makeover
So it needs some blue eyeshadow?
love this..love the humor and the teachings..great..thanks
Thanks
Nice to see some traditional woodworking techniques. Nice trick using the speed square on the bandsaw. Cheers, Huw
Thanks
Like it mate and a good tip for filling 👍👍👍
Thanks
I love that you showed your mistake and how you fixed it
what mistake? i don't make mystakes.
wortheffort lol just ways to teach us mere mortals
Haha, nice! Can't wait to see what table saw you bought. Hurry up with that video!!
editing, editing, editing... but I will give you a hint. My video involves a knife fight.
A nice video Shawn. Lighthearted and a skill builder all in one.
Thanks
Awesome!
I though you thought a simple doorstop was mentioned in the beginning. Simple is definitely in the eye (and skill) of the beholder. Very nice doorstop anyway.
Thanks
I found this yesterday after subscribing ( I have been searching hand cut dovetails and found nobody and I mean no body does it the same) and after putting my Harbor freight 50 lb anvil against the shop door this morning to keep it open I remember seeing this door stop. I have a few practice dovetail joints that I figure why waste them.. TA DA door stop. 49.9 lbs lighter than the anvil. thanks
Different colored sawdust and you get to call it an inlaid dovetail 😉
Brilliant
Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed the video.
Thanks
Thanks for sharing that
Dovetails over morning coffee, it's gonna be a good day! Thanks!
"Best part of waking up..."
Great job 👍 looks to good to be outside
thanks
Great video!
Thanks
Thanks for showing how to fix a loose dovetail. I did the same thing recently, the scrambling to find some shavings to fill the gap. It am starting out on hand cut dovetails.
I have links to some more serious DT video's in the description.
Nice job!
Thanks
Now, it's officially a Woodshop worth the effort to learn techniques, create woodworking and share ideas. Good job dude.
Thanks
Sorry , I couldn't think of any
Dad jokes. I think you secretly like them.
The doorstop reminds me of my grandparents place a wedge for every door.
Back when AC was the breeze passing through.
Loved it, good entertainment, great project. I like seeing how people come up with different ideas and designs for the small detailed projects.
'twas just stupid fun.
I have been trying to learn to make your mushroom projects and undercutting the top is killing me, many catches.
Tommy Devine think of it as a bowl.
Use a sharp tool and take light cuts. Using a small but sturdy scraping tool ( 1/4 inch with rounded point )( similar to the Ellsworth scraping tool) and taking light cutting passes helps get material removed and creates nice rounded shape under the mushroom cap. If the sides of scraping tool are also sharp, then you can slightly rotate the tool as you make the pass and get a sort of shearing cut.
Can initially use a sturdy parting tool to remove material by just going in straight. After first insertion then take 1/2 cuts removing only about 1/8 inch of material. Review my mushroom video to see what I mean. Shawn's Dad.
@@TheWesttexasboy ya, what he said.
I love that would don't know why just love it
it'll darken to a deep burgundy in a few weeks in the sun.
From the raw piece to the finished product, with the simplest of tools. Great principles that can be applied to many jobs in the workshop. Who hasn’t nearly finished a project and a small cosmetic error creeps in under your guard? One way of turning dismay into a workable result and it is a door stop after all!
Thanks
Good job. How about some plans?
That my friend was not simple. I'm sending you a flat rock that my cow used to pee on, now that's simple . Nice job. I especially enjoyed the gap repair trick.
Thanks
I can learn!
I have to admit, it is a touch more simple, than your previous door stop :) Nice video, thanks, for the lesson 👍🏻
Can You please Tell me what kind ofe wood U used? 10q
It's all relative. Bodark
You made a meal of that.
num num
Cool
Thanks
brilliant! I've tried to think of a simpler way to make a door stop, but can't....
Rich Blaker ......I just saw a 6” wedge from a scrap piece of 2 x 4 at about 30% width ways. Works just fine, how many people are going to notice your door stop in the first place?
If you need to you can cut a 100 - 1/4” cubes out of four different types and colors of wood, glue them together in wedge fashion, sand down to exact size door stop you want then seal, stain, sand fine and coat your wedge with the most expensive finish you can find and afford. Finish by carving a beautiful shape to your liking on the face and sides of your wedge, re-finish as before then display under your front door for everyone to see. Just sayin.......I just cut a wedge and use on doors that need to be open for a short time.
admit it, your book case is cinder blocks and 2x12's. Sarcasm and humor dude. Let me have a little fun. It's only woodworking.
wortheffort, I didn’t mean anything against you, I knew you were just having fun. What got me is that guy saying he was confused on how to make a door stop wedge from a piece of wood. Wasn’t so sure he wasn’t being catty.
However back in 67’ I was real poor and a hippie. I painted six concrete cinder blocks black that I stole from my dad including the spray paint and couldn’t afford but 1 - 2”x 6” 10’ long. I painted the boards black too. Me and my girlfriend spent many nights sitting on the floor (no couch) in our giant beanbag next to that beautiful bookshelf listening to ZZ Top and Rolling Stones while burning a fat doobie and staring at our cool posters bought at Spencer’s under a couple black lights. My cinder block 2 x 6 bookshelf lasted the 4 years will lived together. I tried making one several years later but it just didn’t have that special something, know what I mean Vern. I enjoy your channel and have been a sub for about a year now. Thanks for your comments friend.
p.s. if that guy couldn’t figure out how to make a simple door stop, fat chance he will attempt your creation mate.
thank you . what kind of wood was that please ?
bodark
@@wortheffort thank you
Shawn what finish did you use?
oil/wax
I keep thinking about making one too, but then I look at how well my brake rotor on the floor is doing and just go on to something else.
David Walling don’t ever get rid of the brake rotor.
How is this approach, in any shape or form, better or simpler than cutting a wedge from one piece of wood? Enlighten me, please. :)
Separates out the people who understand sarcasm/joke.
wortheffort ouch. :)
@@jeskasper Awe come on, ya had to expect that. :)
Did you make the joints sloppy intentionally so you could show how to fix them?
Hrmmmmm...
I never figured you for a lounge jazz fan.
'twas free music.
Enjoy your martini by the pool, dude.
So does this "simple" door stop actually work better, or supposed to look better than a 2x4 wedge I hacked off with my radial arm saw in 3 seconds? I guess anything for a video! Still enjoyed watching! Kevin
Your bookshelves, 2x12 and cinder blocks right? Just a little fun that let me demonstrate some different techniques.
wortheffort I know. Good job!
It's so simple, you should've called the video "Trivial door stop" 😀
Yep
"Simple door stop" - Yeah, right.
So... in exactly which universe would that be considered simple? :)
Same universe where I can sell floating sand in the Pacific as an island.
That's is a really cool project.
As an aspiring wood worker, simple-ish projects like this are great and what a great way to practice dovetails. I can make a bunch of "gifts" for my friends.
Thank You
Thanks
Bloody hell thats ruff 😵
Damn skippy it is.
Something not too far over my skill level...Thanks...rr
It's be a nice practice piece you could start/finish after dinner.
Those complaining it’s not simple... watched many videos of a man cutting a wedge from some 4x2 recently?
Yes. That angle is the one critical cut.
Ferndalien 😂
As the Germans use to say: "Why make something simple, when one may complicate it so nicely?". 🙄🇸🇪
Bertil Adania - contractors and consultants say: never make it simple and straightforward when you can make it grand and glorious. 🥴
sounds logical to me.
and charge more
😂
Simple Huh??? Tak a piece of 2 x 4 that is 8 inches long. Cut a diagonal line from corner to corner. WaLa you have 2 door stops. That is simple and only takes 5 minutes....
But that wouldn't separate out the people who understand sarcasm/joke.
You said “simple” door stop
It's not smart....
Dont get me wrong, looks nice, good project, but seems a little over engineered, simple wedge would have still worked, one cut too, much quicker.
But that would have been boring and we would not have seen the method to make dovetails look better.
I think you forget the fun to make something...you can also buy a door stop..but whats the fun...
and shelves can be made from stacking cinder blocks and 2x12's.... It's just woodworking, have a little fun. It's all sarcasm and humor.... I am after all, Texan.
U said simple😅😅😅
A SIMPLE Door Stop?????
And Pro it’s certainly not smart.
Nice try, but we all know you leave those big gaps on purpose, keep trying.
Not worth the effort.
burn.... if you didn't learn anything
Hi wortheffort, actually I did. I learned to make something only if I think I will be satisfied with the final result. Else, buy it.
Don’t get me wrong, I typically love your work. And you are a great instructor. That’s why I’m a subscriber. But if you wanted to make a point without saying a word, you overestimated my comprehension capabilities because I didn’t get it.
