  • What is different about the Ottoman war? -- A comparative perspective on WWI. The experience of World War I in the Ottoman Empire was substantially different from that in other belligerent countries in Europe. This was true for the outbreak of war, the war years themselves, and the aftermath of the war.
    It is now 100 years since the onset of World War I. Our picture of this war has been shaped to a great extent by visions of the war enthusiasm of 1914, by the mud and trenches of Flanders and the Somme, and by the revolutions of 1917-18, all of them European phenomena. The argument of this lecture is that the experience of World War I in the Ottoman Empire was substantially different from that in other belligerent countries in Europe. This was true for the outbreak of war, the war years themselves, and the aftermath of the war.
    Open lecture by renowned historian Erik J. Zürcher, Affilated Professor at Stockholm University Institute for Turkish Studies (SUITS) and Professor of Turkish Studies, Leiden University.

    Why didnt they strike at the railroad system rather than trying to land on a terrain at gallipoli that is very difficult to navigate in. They could have potentially been able to prevent resources from germany coming in. Putting a blockade up also at where the narrow area of sea opens up into mediterranean sea.

    How can there be a period of 40 year peace in Europe when there were for example two Balkan wars in the years before 1914? Is the Balkan not part of Europe?

    • @bwda666
      @bwda666 5 лет назад +2

      because they class the "limited wars" as NOT COUNTING as wars i think? Balkan wars.crimea,franco-prussian, as not being wars!!! They're looking for "general engagements" like napoleonic,or the 3o years war,or either ww1 or ww2---anything else doesnt count as a war!! This talk at least counts the franco-prussian as a war!!! Many of these talks say europe hadnt been at war since Waterloo!!!! O KNOW---its incredible isn't it!!! Strange way to define war & peace if you ask me?!

    • @AlbertSchram
      @AlbertSchram 5 лет назад +5

      You are right. This is writing the Ottoman Empire out of European history. Moreover, the other wars outside Europe had apart from the local population, directly affected European states and diplomacy as well.
      Moreover, there was a charged atmosphere because of the successful terrorist attacks and political murders of the Austrian-Hungarian Empress, Russian Tsar, Italian King, American President around 1900, and several failed attempts. What era of peace and prosperity are we talking about?

    • @alioshax7797
      @alioshax7797 Год назад

      @@AlbertSchramI guess it was wrongly phrased, but you're also arguing for no reason.
      Yes, the Balkans are in Europe, but it doesn't take a PhD to understand that here, Europe refees to the largest belligerants of WW1, that is France, Germany, the UK, etc.
      Also, yes. In these regions, peace prevailed, at least on their territories. Terrorism did exist indeed, but as terrorism today, the actual number of victims of terrorism was irrelevant. Especially when compared with the mass graveyard of 1914-1918.

    11:47 "They (Balkans/Thrace) had been Ottoman for longer than most of Anatolia"
    That is because, prior to Mehmed II conquering Constantinople (1453),
    his father Murad II had conquered lands encircling Constantinople.
    At this time ~1450, most of Anatolia was not Ottoman.

    • @vinm300
      @vinm300 3 года назад

      What was the rest of Anatolia at that time ~1450 ?
      Good question.
      Well Timur (Tamerlane) died in 1405, and he left Anatolia with a semi-Seljuk Beylik arrangement. There was an Interregnum/civil war amongst the Ottoman contenders, from which Mehmed I emerged victorious.
      Armenia history :-
      "After Tamerlane's death, Anatolia becomes a battleground between the rival tribal confederations of the Ak Koyunlu and the Kara Koyunlu. "

    Even Tukish perception (our) of the events is far from truth & even conflicts within...
    This is the reason why Turks go "overreactive" when mainly Armenian issue is opened...
    Definitions of the speaker can be wrong but understantable...
    Eg/ Young Turks: Student revolt who sent to France, saw the environment, demanded same inside...
    Where invided to Palace; explained
    politely (they were sent by sultan for education in purpose helping reformations already on the way)
    simply not blamed even granted;
    but asked to be patient...
    Sultans program done by scholars local & import was not so different
    than those of Kemal Pashas, far more "logical"...
    ( Today by law we have to wear western hat, 7-25 yr imprisonment, law cannot be questioned)
    Well no one gives a crap... Practically doesnt exist...

    They never had a nationalistic doctrine...
    They were clowns in diplomacy...
    (Said-i Nur's followers & Freemasons
    same idea ?? But same party ?? Same cause ??)
    Cause was simple:
    * Serve "Devlet-i Âliyye" and the family on charge "Hanedan-ı Aali Osman" (if necessary dethorning)
    Turkish & Armenian issue cannot be understood by any means since its not a Turkish & Armenian issue anyway... (Name of State)
    When I first intr
    Devlet-i Aliyye" is called Osmanlı's by Turks... Turkey by west since 1300s...

    Well reason is history we had
    Turks Huns Gokturks %5
    Selcuks %2
    Ottomans %3
    ATATURK %10
    ATATURK HOW GREAT İS % 35
    STANDİNG & THANKİNG & SİNGİNG
    TO A STONE: % 50
    From age 5-16 (early finished)
    After UCONN 20-22 in military

    Blue barret i was (wife of Reds)
    100m run stop shoot 400 yard...
    if below 2/3...
    * Slap-Spit till Red barret sees red in spit...
    * Run & Salute His Majesty's Stone
    Apologize...
    * Run back salute officer
    * Red: He forgave you?
    * No
    * Go again...
    BTW: Same Army in PKK, Syria area orders read Koran together...
    Hipocrat mofos...
    When I hear
    "Founder Of Modern Turkey"
    "Father of Turks"
    I say; ok I was saying same...
    But I was brainfucked...
    That guy thinks Turks live on trees
    some came, teaching how to eat seat wear speedos instead what adam eve wore ??
    Even before Selcuks if asked to be called "Ataturk" whom asks would be behaded since its an insult to Khans ancestors...
    Im not a Ottomanist Or any Xxx-ist
    But Kemal was a sick man havin
    "Narsistic Personality Disorder"
    whom never to be blamed since he was sick and dead...
    His followers were my teachers...
    They are my enemies...
    You cannot do that to a 5 yr old...

    Turkey has to hang C.U.P at first in
    history books...
    Neo-Ottomans even love Enver....
    Armenian Diaspora just cares $$$
    since no else they have to eat...
    Turkish style only helps those hipocrats marching with PKK
    on NY streets...
    Excuse me but they also are double faced hipocrats...
    So no offence to anyone
    but those tear their asses to
    hear an apology...
