if you've never seen this movie, watch it this halloween. its really fun! oh do a double feature of this movie and 1988's "the blob". it makes for a perfect remake of a "Drive in movie" type of feel.
the movie is an obvious nod to 1950s alien movies which is what the writers and directors of the movie grew up watching. its sad today that we dont have movies inspired by 80s movies ya know? like i grew up on 80s movies, if i was a movie maker id def be basing my movies off of the movies i watched as a kid. we just dont have that today at all. perfect example, if you ask me, is "the thing" movies. in the 50s we had "the thing from another planet" it was this robot like man thing or whatever, ok cool. fast forward to the 80s where carpenter was like "ya know what? the thing movie was a fav of mine as a kid, i wanna make my version of it!" and he DID and it was AMAZING and one of the best horror movies of all time. it was the same concept but different enough and again, it was amazing.
