Another great video, I'm really glad you raised awareness of this as I didn't fully appreciate the cultural significance of bonfire night at Lewes. Also Dom's point about regulating after all of the chaos - too relatable!!
@@Sybl68 Thanks!! And it was fun to read about, it helped me understand it a lot more! Haha definitely needed to regulate after that, it was so loud and busy 😂
Fantastic, I’ve always wondered about this event! Thanks for giving such a great insight into it. Not sure it would be possible for me in a wheelchair/walker with all those people sadly. And those flashy light/noise makers. But it looks like a cool event, something I’d have seen at Burningman. Hehe
I was thinking of you as I was filming it, I thought ‘Chrisy would love this it’s so gothic’ 😂 the parade goes through the whole town and there’s definitely accessible places you could watch it from, but I’d definitely wear earplugs next time to enjoy the explosions 😅💖
Wow, holy heck that was intense! 😂 But really cool to see, I love learning about different traditions around the world. This one was really impressive, haha!
This was super interesting. I have to say thanks to you, I think I can afford a better vacation next year with that pet sitting app! So excited so many places on there to visit even some possible road trip weekends. Thank you for sharing!

Wow! I've never heard of this. Does anything accidentally get set on fire that's not supposed to be with all the fireworks and torches of fire people are carrying?
Dude. I have never heard of this but oh am i amazed😍😍😍 so cool especially the meaning and background where do i stay I'm coming lol this is the coolest thing ever and i MUST see it with my own eyes at some point👀👀👀 thanks for all the information it definitely wouldn't have hit the same without knowing all of it. It's amazing to me that they couldn't stop this and then just gave up😂
You have to!! It definitely makes much more sense knowing the background of it, it’s such an amazing event. Hahah yeah, I love that the town just kept going 😂
@@AlwaysAway I think I will, the sounds will be super intense, the headset really picks them up and the rain sounds felt real lol the chaotic sounds of "burn him! Kill him!" Should be super crazy🤣🤣🤣🤣
This looks insane!! I've never really been to a big bonfire event, we just used to buy a box of fireworks and light them in the garden, my Dad told me he took me to a local bonfire when I was a little kid and I was traumatised and kept asking why they were burning the man so he never took me again LOL 🤣
Hahaha oh god, that does sound traumatising 😂 I don’t remember ever seeing a proper bonfire when I was younger, only fireworks in the back garden. No wonder he never took you again 😂 even now i found it super eerie!
My town (lewes) is a weird place to live, they spend all year preparing and all the societies try sabotage each other and spy on each other. You will see an 80 year old man wondering the town with a stick and his family throughout the year then suddenly see him in war paint dressed as a native american marching with a torch and dancing around the bonfire. Very surreal
You forgot to mention this event also marks the execution of the 17 protestant Martyrs about 1556 by Mary I, which is symbolised by the burning crosses. The Authorities have tried for many years to stop this event.
Great video - it looked like the world’s biggest game of “Where’s Wally?” with added pyrotechnics! I really miss fireworks - they are banned for most of the year in Cyprus due to the dry climate and the inherent fire risk - nice to see that Health and Safety haven’t put a stop to all the fun in the UK!❤👍
Thanks Stephen! Hahaha so true, I wonder if this tradition is where Wally's outfit came from 😂 Ah that makes sense, the authorities would definitely stop it if it weren't for the societies - health and safety hate it 😂💖
It is not dangerous at all. I've taken my tiny children to it every year for their entire lives. The 'firecrackers' are agricultural rook scarers and are quite safe. There are not scores of injuries or anything to suggest otherwise. There is a constant tension between the town, its traditions and the authorities who would prefer to save themselves the expense of policing it and this kind of title is a little bit unhelpful..it's a shame because this is otherwise a great video that does capture the event nicely.
I tried to research them and couldn’t find anything about them, so thanks! It’s good to know they aren’t dangerous, it’s quite scary to be next to them. I think I’d need some ear plugs if I went back and I wouldn’t be so bothered by them 😅 I’ll think of a new title 🫶🏼
Did you spot Darth Vader?! Hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching 🫶
Lewes isn’t tiny it’s actually quite big for a town
Not tiny, but it’s definitely classed as a small town
@ yeah, I only mean the town centre
@@Straightupfacts-d9q lewes is a pretty small town, you can walk from one side to the other in about 20 minutes if you are a fast walker
@@comradetoad9464 no you can’t, if you can walk 7 miles in 20 minutes then you should hold the world record my friend
@@Straightupfacts-d9qwe get it bro it’s the biggest town ever 😂
There is 6 bonfire sites in Lewes and all of them have their own firework displays hard to say which is the best
We weren’t sure which to go to, the Lewes Borough site was great though, we could see the fireworks from the other societies up on the hill 😊
@@Ryangrenfall-f8m waterloo is my local one, i think its the best every year despite being the only free one
@@comradetoad9464 I disagree this year Waterloo wasn’t as good as it usually is. Southover was better by a long shot
Just gotta say, due to the lighting, the torches, and the nature of the event, the filming and cinematography in this video is amazing.
