I am 92. This is a wonderful example of the enjoyment a group of teens can enjoy when their energies are channeled properly. I enjoyed watching and listening to their presentation . Excellent presentation. You should be proud of yourselves.
Look, I have no idea what kind of Higher Power took over the feed on my RUclips channel and somehow had this video right alongside all the normal fishing, Patriotic, and heavy metal music stuff I normally have, BUT I sure am glad that it happened. These young ladies and gentlemen are really amazing and truly talented. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a steel drum HS band. It's really refreshing to see something like this and I feel a tiny bit better about this old, messed up world than I did before this happened. Y'all are crushing it, band members!! Greetings from the Mighty Razorback. 👍🇺🇸
I agree with your comment on the RUclips steel drum HS band video. I am sometimes pleasantly surprised at what RUclips offers up as suggestions for me to watch.
I'm living in the country where proudly Steel pan originated Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 and lived in USA and enjoyed Dueling Banjos in my childhood in Upstate New York. You high school guys and girls sound great and your having fun. Nice to see how music has no boundaries of age nor culture 🎉
Celtic Thunder made old Irish songs and storytelling very popular. I believe you too could embellish your talents and presentation even more with stories and song explaining the origins of Island music. This has the potential to create a permanent new wave and appeal to many. Watching you smiling and clearly having fun is like a magnet to your audience. There are so many songs although a few might be a little naughty sung as a chorus. I live in Canada and I’m sure there is room for a new sound. GO PETOSKEY HIGH. Make it so! 😄👏🎶🛢🥁 Good travels and creativity.
Do agree.ppl. Do Love 💕 our pan and go bunkers. When you listen. To the music I. Also played when I lived in New York Many moons Plus fla in The early 2000 Now I Am Back home in the island 🏝️🇹🇹 Listen to Pan is Like a magic It really hits Ur soul
These kids work very, very hard on their music and performances. In the summer, they take a couple of weeks off, and then they practice the rest of the summer. Also, band camp for a week. During school, the kids come in an hour early for practice and two nights a week working on their show. Our steel drum band and marching band have been state champions for years. Our school also has an awesome award winning jazz band. Our band has performed several times at Disney World, and the steel drum band has performed at Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Northern Michigan is perhaps not the most obvious place for steel drums to catch on, but as a Michigander I'm just tickled to death by the talent and polish these kids show. I've always had good feelings about Petoskey; this is one more reason to like the town.
Not only do these adolescent musicians deserve a ton of credit for their talent and hard work, but so does their director for putting this all together, perhaps even arranging this classic for steel drum band.
Member of the band here! Thank you so much. It means a lot because most of us put upwards of 7 years into this band! Our director deserves a bunch of credit. His name is Duane Wilson and without him we couldn’t do what we do
@@joygirladventures1015Thanks for posting this awesome bit of Midwest musicianship! (Too bad about some of the trolly comments, though! ¯\(°_o)/¯)
I came across the duelling banjos piece by chance after seeing two musicians play it on a train. The original composition seemed hard enough and yet to see it being played on steel drums is jaw dropping. Bravo to the children for playing and congratulations to the music director for arranging it. Fabulous
We saw this group in Petoskey several years ago. They really put on an amazing show. Hope we get a chance to see them this year when we are in Petoskey.
I've been fortunate enough to see these amazingly fun and talented kids four times over the last few years, and they just keep getting better and better and more fantastic. If you're in northern Michigan and have a chance to see the Petoskey Steel Drum Band, DO NOT miss it!👏🤓😃😊😺👍
Greetings from the UK, I'm British of Trinidad decent, steele band is part of my cultural heritage. I just wanted to say that these kids were absolutely amazing they really know how to make the old pan sing beautifully. Now if they can learn and master how to play cricket I would be beyond impressed.
Many objects can be turned into a musical instrument. But not everyone can play them with such joy, such entrhusiasm. These folks can Plaaaaaaay. Loved it...
Just great to listen too the kids enjoying there Gig. I don't play anymore lost heart in my music yars ago. As I live in a flat no noise Keep playing get better and make a disc I wuld buy one. bye for now.
Funny and Fun. Great skill and talent. I saw the movie when it came out (I was working at the theatre) I enjoyed it then and I enjoy it now , in every form. Deliverance meets the Caribbean.
it is sooo gratifying to see old style instruments bought about again,, steel drums, kalimbas, old artifacts from europe.. and the KIDS playing them holy moly!
A fellow North Carolinian, Mr Arthur Smith would be so amazed and proud that his composition is still being played & enjoyed by people of all ages!! When I was a child we always watched his show on Saturday afternoons. He was very talented & always ended his show with a gospel song. Sweet memories! Y’all did a great job!! ❤❤❤
These are our local Petoskey kids. The steel drum band and Petoskey marching band have been state champions for many years. They have also performed several times at Disney World. We here in Petoskey are so proud of our kids we could bust! My wife and I chaperoned many many band trips when our kids went though the program. The steel drum band have also performed at Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Our Marching band is also state champions. Better than many college bands. They have performed at Disney World several times. And the steel drum band have performed at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We are so proud of all these kids!
I cannot conceive of how many hours upon hours of teenage free time these dedicated musicians must have sacrificed to be able to put in all the practice this must have taken.
These kids practice pretty much all summer. They take three weeks off at the beginning of summer break, then they practice three days a week. Plus, a week of band camp, after which they do sectional practice two days a week and program practice two nights a week. When school starts, they come in an hour early for sectional practice and two nights practice until competition season is over. These kids kick butt!
This iconic piece of music must be very difficult to play in any instrument other than banjo, since it requires great coordination and good timing. I loved it!
GREAT JOB. Hope you all remember. ONCE Something goes on the Internet. YOU ARE THERE FOREVER to please everyone. Congrats from the East Coast...at the Va. Beach.
This is fantastic! It hits home with me; I grew up in the Caribbean and played in school and community bands, used to live in Petoskey, and now live where Deliverance was filmed. Almost too much coincidence.

I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains and this is considered our “anthem” and I’ve heard it in every way imaginable but I’m here to say I would have never thought of it being played on steel drums. Much less by a band of lovely ladies. Well done! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻😎
I am seriously impressed. ❤😅 🎉 the time and effort you put in learning plus your attention to the rhythm and your ability to discern when to jump in to follow the beat is in my opinion something to be proud of 😅❤🎉 very very well done. High-5 to you all.

I love the music of a steel band and am really impressed that a High School in the US would have a program for this. I hope they stay with it.

Big money in Petoskey, Michigan. Drums and lessons aren't cheep.
@@GottaWannaDance I have heard that each one of those drums costs a lot of money, well into the thousands.
