  • It was the first royal wedding of 2023. The celebration was simply magnificent and lasted the whole week! The daughter of the Sultan of Brunei, Princess Azemah, married in the most luxurious palace in the world. Everything was glittering in gold and diamonds. But this wedding has also become one of the most controversial in royal life. Why do many common people think that the princess chose the wrong man? And why are social media users outraged by this alliance?

My late maternal grandparents were first cousins. They lived in different countries and their fathers wanted to tie their families together as back then, siblings and cousins who lived in different countries become estranged as travelling overseas were very costly and risky. They met just a few days prior to their wedding and lived a peaceful life with 2 very healthy, very smart girls who are are very kind and loving people and also successful in their careers.

What is stated here is correct from the viewpoint of biology (genetics). Marriage is discouraged between first cousins due to the probability of increasing occurrence of genetic defects. Probabilities deal with possible occurrences so there is no guarantee that just because it did not surface among children of first cousins, it will not happen in other cases. But the possibility is greatly increased in offspring of first cousin marriages.

Apparently Egyptian King Tut and various family members inherited grave defects and illnesses from in-breeding. They married within family to keep strong family bonds and their wealth, etc

King Tut married his own family member. BRUNEI princess married her first cousin from diff father. That is not in breeding. Get your fact right.

In royal marriages it is common. They do look at the two families. If they are all in generally good health then marrying a first cousin is considered ok. As long as it doesn't happen in subsequent generations right before or right after.

Even in America it is not socially acceptable but what can you do. These days families are separated by years and miles, generations of not knowing each other, a chance meeting of cousins falling in love before actually knowledge of lineage. It happens as it did to my daughter having just divorced from a toxic marriage, found understanding and kindness from a work colleague in different states from where they were born. She became pregnant, before I had learned, oddly they found their blood connections before informing their parents. They have two Beautiful healthy daughters, both very bright and creatively talented. The Princess, at her age will need to take precautions and should re-consider having children, maybe leave it to her siblings.
