Lol you are not really supposed to carry it around. Unless you have a small bluetooth keyboard. The idea is you leave the peripherals at the office/home and just plug and play when you get there.
+Rick James i think over the next 10 years microsoft are gonna make some real surprising moves, they are already heading in the right direction with their hardware and some of the investments they are making in software are also pretty interesting. competition is good man!
+qqqqhuz you wouldn't need to. If you're using it at an office, mice and keyboards are abundant plus a lot of mobile people carry a mouse and mobile keyboard.
Wow that Surface book is a beautiful machine... but those prices are insane. But design wise Microsoft is definitely getting on top of the market, if they keep putting out beautiful products like these Apple is going to have a very hard contender in the near future. Also the specs from the Lumia 950's are very good... good job Microsoft.
+Rowie Balilo one of the reasons why Microsoft priced their Surface line up as such because they don't want to eat up the sales of their OEM. consider this as a proof of concept from Microsoft and to give a kick to OEM to start producing something better or cheaper
I'm just waiting for Microsoft to team up with Wacom so I can have a truly portable art computer. Give me a powerful Surface with customisable hotkeys and a pen with multiple levels of pressure sensitivity with the ability to turn the touch off to stop interference when you draw.
+DavijoMan I'd rather wacom felt competition from microsoft and would start releasing and developing cheaper cintiqs like they did with regular tablets when the chinese caught up with those. The prices are outrages currently, i'd pick one up immediatly if they had a version without those useless buttons on the sides, if the manufacturing costs would be reduced that is.
+DavijoMan The Surface Pro 1 and 2 had a Wacom digitizer. They switched for the Surface Pro 3. The N-trig tech is supposedly superior to the previous Wacom tech.
DavijoMan I guess a personal preference to a degree, but i can't see myself using them when regular wacom intuos pro tablets buttons are not only ergonomicly poorly designed ( atleast 4 ones are absolutely atrocious), but most importantly offers a slower and significantly inferior workflow than using a simple keyboard. To me thats uselless. I'd rather have an extra button on the pen. Cant have too many of those.
One thing that people seem to miss is that on the Surface Book, there is a PCI-E out pins on the tablet. Essentially, if MSFT releases pinouts for the keyboard dock pins, there can be third party docks for this tablet-laptop with different GPUs. Personally U series 2C/4T processors are bit underpowered compared to desktop processors, but with an option for higher spec GPUs, this thing can have humongous computing power for the size.
Discrete graphics AND pen functionality? Wow, that's groundbreaking at this point. It feels like most laptops these days, even up to the $800+ range, are almost solely using integrated graphics. Very few, if any, slim build laptops or convertibles have discrete graphics. Basically you either get a monster machine with no need for a touchscreen, or you get something nice, thin and portable but weak. I've been begging for this combo (pen and touch with discrete graphics) forever, and finally someone's doing it. This may be a major competitor for my money over the Cintiq Companion 2 if Wacom doesn't get off their butts and find a way to get discrete graphics in there. Interesting that the discrete graphics are an add-on, and it sounds like the price point already puts it squarely in the middle of what I'd have to pay for the Cintiq Companion 2. That makes it a hard sell, but we'll see how it performs. My biggest gripe at this point would be N-Trig pen instead of Wacom, but the software I use now might not make that distinction an issue.
+homopunk84 maybe, but they don't have an Environment where it would sense for now. IOS is just laughable compared to Windows and i dont think their a10x will come up to i7 power and OS X is just shitty for touch.
+Bitcoon i had the same problem as you until i bought my 2013 sony vaio flip 15. depending on how much these go for with the nvidea graphics and what type they are, i might upgrade but i would check ebay and see if your money might be better spent on something like the sony laptop i have now.
I just have to say I really like how they made clear display models to show the layout of their internals. That's a really slick way of showing off their new product line!
Wait, does this mean that you can't fully close the Surface Book? There seems to be a gap between the keyboard and the screen when it is closed. I wonder what's going to happen when one applies pressure to it... like how the laptop would normally would be pressured when it's in the bag.
+Corvaire Wind Sarcasm? Sorry I can't tell. That was a terrible camera angle, you couldn't even tell the size differences between the devices and the focus was terrible.
Suchir Kavi no, not sarcasm. How ever I did notice that portion and didn't really care. Seeing as there is probably another 20 people behind him waiting to do reviews, some shots you just have to live with.
+KidSavesTheWorld -Again to upgrade my i7 SP3 to the equivalent model would cost around $1000. Looks like im going to have to settle for the new type cover in the mean time
+Ex EddieB Camera assistant for live events. Cable bashing is a pretty important job, you don't want your steadicam operator tripping over the cable or it snagging on something and losing signal.
So i'm confused as to why you'd get a Surface Pro 4 at all now? If the Surface Book works at full laptop performance when you're just turning it 180 degrees and connecting it so you're basically in tablet mode but whilst connected to the gpu, why would anyone want a Surface Pro 4 instead of a Surface Book? (Not considering people who are after super lightweight and tiny tablets) am I missing something?
This "I dont want to pay for the work and quality I get, because everything is cheap as hell and destroys the market/job wages, but hey its just competition and I like it cheap" makes me sick. If you want it, safe money and buy it when you can affort it, like in good old times.
I wouldn't mind if they had kept the surface the same thickness maybe even half a mm thicker. also the old pen magnets to the side of the pro 3, it works pretty well if you use the shirt clip part
Excited that the new keyboards and pen are backwards compatible with the SP 3, and envious that the Skylark processor means it won't have the same overheating issues. In fact, no fan at all, which no doubt helped slim it down. Envious of the Surface Book - the GPU in particular for 2D/3D graphics software, the 12 hour operational time (with GPU/keyboard/battery attached), and the larger size, of course. Wonder how well that fancy hinge serves as an easel?
So a lot of the pen functions have returned from Surface Pro 1, which has the best stylus-pen up until the Pro 4. However, the thickness of the pen looks too wide. The pen that comes with the Pro 1 is near perfect.
Can you use a external graphic card on surfaces? or you really need a thunderbolt on ? can you have usb connected to a thunderbolt and use a external graphic card?
Like the super quality of the Surface Book. Also the pen, fitness band and 950 XL. Some talk of software in the pipeline for using the pen to write on the screen of 950XL?
I only got to use it for a few minutes, but the the new glass trackpad feels really nice and is larger than the one on previous type covers. These new ones will work with SP3
Great job Norm, thanks much...one question though, I saw what looked like cutaways that exposed the guts of the Surface, is this common (perhaps it is, but I've not viewed many review videos) ?
Does the screen bounce around when you tap on stuff on the surface book? That was the one thing I hated most about touch screen laptops. The surface line fixed that with the kickstand.
Absolutely love this book and will probably be buying one next month as soon as some user reviews come out. My question is if apple was pushing out this sort of creative product that the seem to be pushing toward with the iPad pro and touch force which one would you pick up? And will apple realistically venture in the direction ever considering iOS and OS X. I'm just wondering if as in jumping ship now back to windows (probably) will I be coming back in a few years???
The Surface Book is a game changer. My criticism of tablets has always been that they are only really good for web browsing. If you want to do real work, you need a proper keyboard, and decent hardware. The fact that the Surface Book is foremost a laptop, but also doubles as a tablet is the way of the future. I cannot tell you how excited I am at getting one of these as it will help me enormously in my day job. The 13" size will fit nicely in my backpack as I cycle around Cambridge and make it great for meetings. The tablet mode will be fantastic for meetings also. The decent hardware specs of the Surface Book means I will be able to use it for everything. Really just cannot wait to get one.
I'm a Mac user and Graphic Designer and I have to say Microsoft came out with some really useful products. I think Apple will have to take notice and consider some similar offerings.
Was about to pull the trigger on purchasing a Surface Book to use as an almost exclusive Wacom tablet, but then after reading that it would probably last for 3-4hrs on battery I hesitated D: I'm gonna probably wait it out and see what the review say :O
I'm still a bit puzzled by these surface devices. I keep seeing them promoted as if they and their form factor is the next big mainstream evolution in the pc, and I'm sat here watching these reviews on my 27" monitor a bit confused as to why I would want a 13" screen for anything productivity or mission critical. Mebbe I'm getting old, but when I need to really get stuff done or sit down and pump out work, I need a standard-fare PC with big screen, non-attached keyboard and mouse. Can I use this for AutoCAD? PhotoShop?ArcGIS?? InDesign??? All at the same time???? I'm guessing I'm totally misinterpreting the intent of the marketing mantra, because I'm really feeling like this is presented as my next main/primary PC, and is priced accordingly. Or is the mistake mine, and this is truly just the next step after the tablet.
was I trippin or are the keys lighting up in different areas as the shadows of his hand cover them? 10:10 if so that's badass if not still a beautiful machine I need one!
Here's something to think about for the next gen Surface Book. Would you guys mind if Microsoft replace the Mini Displayport with a Thunderbolt 3 Type C but keep the USB 3.0 or should they just replace both the USB 3.0 and Mini Displayport with USB 3.1 Type C and Thunderbolt 3, respectively, in order the make the base thinner and also include an adapter for USB Type C to USB Type B?
I was there, what a day! That was awesome, the phones were the coolest i think, much better in person than the online pictures. And those removable cases...omg Mozo!
I know specs are important, but I would've liked to see Norm showcase the use of the pen. Nevertheless, I think Microsoft new products are very interesting.
I think the pen is not really useful because I don't think you'll have enough time to take notes by handwriting, except for artists who usually draws a lot. Also, I'm not quite sure with the fan performance. If you do heavier tasks like playing games such as Dota 2, will the fan sounded louder? It's better to afford a laptop because it has a better performance right? Can somebody tell me reasons to buy the SP4 for college students because I don't find anything special about it. Thanks
Hey (everyone) - - mind answering my question? I am planning on buying either the $1,899 model or the $2,099 - but I'm not sure which one would fit my needs. I will be doing digital art so i'll be using photoshop. I'll be editing videos and would want to be able to use a second external monitor with ease as well. My main use would be for music. I currently use a mac with logic pro x but with switching to windows 10 i'll probably use pro tools or Ableton. Which model would be better? The i5 or i7? Thanks. :)
Hello :) Want to buy this but need help! If I use inking to annotate a word document created on surface, if I open the word doc on my iMac, will the ink annotations disappear?
So i'm confused as to why you'd get a Surface Pro 4 at all now? If the Surface Book works at full laptop performance when you're just turning it 180 degrees and connecting it so you're basically in tablet mode but whilst connected to the gpu, why would anyone want a Surface Pro 4 instead of a Surface Book? (Not considering people who are after super lightweight and tiny tablets) I might have missed something, i don't exactly know much about pc's and shit but yea this is bugging me
As someone who grew up in the 90s, it is so weird to see microsoft become one of the most interesting companies in tech. If they could only figure out how to market their stuff properly.
Dekomori Sanae That's 3800 SGD for us where I live... It hurts... plus, you kinda need the workstation dock and pen if you want the premium experience... Time to save up hahas
+Bryan Lee That's INSANE. 4000AUD. Way too expensive for a portable ultrabook to me. Hopefully Apple would come up with a new Macbook Air replacement soon.
Really hard decision between SP4 and Surface book. I LOVE the book , but I thought the tablet part would've lasted more than 3 hours. I would've liked to take the tablet part to class to take notes and then come home and plug it into the laptop when I do graphic design. Seems like it wouldn't last long enough.
Well done Norm, thank god Will did not cover this. Lumias on tested? Wtf thought id never see that. W10M, astoria and ios bridge, continuum and Nokias pure view cameras... Worth a look tested. Onya guys
My only disappointment is the 3 hours battery from the Surface Book when detached. I really liked the idea of this being a tablet akin to a surface pro, just larger, and then slotted into the base it becomes a beast laptop.
+Tested so, if we don't count the bigger screen and the option for the discrete gpu, what is the difference between a 1k $ sp4 and a 1,5k $ book? I really thought this was an incredible piece of hardware, but if the gpu is optional and the battery life on the tablet only mode isn't that great, why should I spend the 500 bucks more?
+Smadonno There's not a direct comparison with the lowest end models for that price. The closest would be a 1300-ish SP4 w/cover and 1500 SB. That would definitely account for the screen size and keyboard quality IMO. Also the additional ports in the base, though not having any in the detached 'clipboard' is a trade-off there.
+Tested Wow Everything about this surface book seems so amazing... however I feel like the clipboard battery life may be a little low and they should charge eachother... What is your opinion on there not being a kickstand on the clipboard?
I knew MS was gonna go a long way since the Surface RT, which was a foundation for something like this. With the surface dock, I really do think the Surface Pro 4 will be the best tablet (if it has a number of good tablet apps)/laptop/pc with the surface dock, and this will be a taste of what all in one future computing will be like.
This is an awesome looking laptop with some cool tech, but I can't help wondering who this is for exactly. It is too cost prohibitive for students and to fringe for the majority of business professionals who from what I've seen get computers from their company. I just don't understand where the laptop fits into the market. I feel similarly about the surface pro 4.
The ipad pro is nowhere near a competitor to the surface pro line, once it starts running a full os instead of a mobile os, then it'll be a competitor.
Microsoft or Apple: Where do you fall?
For once I have to say MSFT did some good things with both the laptop and the full OS off the phone option. Very cool.
+Rick James the phone thing is cool as hell.
+neglectedurchin True, but who wants to always carry the adaptor + full size mice and keyboard around...?!

+Xrilex That's why they should lower their prices. They'll have better customer value proposition than Apple. It's all in the marketing though
+Hiluxtaco Like say, October 29 2015? is that close enough? :P
+Xrilex It seems more like a macbook pro competitor (and priced accordingly) with the surface pro being a macbook competitor.
+Rowie Balilo one of the reasons why Microsoft priced their Surface line up as such because they don't want to eat up the sales of their OEM. consider this as a proof of concept from Microsoft and to give a kick to OEM to start producing something better or cheaper
+Xrilex not unless they give discount for students on the books

+DavijoMan The Surface Pro 1 and 2 had a Wacom digitizer. They switched for the Surface Pro 3. The N-trig tech is supposedly superior to the previous Wacom tech.
Some Wacoms are too big and heavy

Most complete Hands on video by far, until now ! Thanks !
Norman Chan! The focus!
I just have to say I really like how they made clear display models to show the layout of their internals. That's a really slick way of showing off their new product line!
This is the most positive comment section I've ever seen on a tech video
+Daryn Brown Shit! I will try really hard to ruin that. Also, your name is stupid and you are stupid!
+- spazz - Try harder than that
Hands On starts Surface 4 at 5:44 & Surface Book at 8:06
Thanks :)
the only bad thing about them I can think of is the price...
Get that money
+Fabian Hansen Good products cost money. Who woulda thunk it.
Kael I know, it should cost more than a laptop with around the same specs, but not that much more....
+Fabian Hansen Yes, that much more, doing this is not a simple engineering task, else Apple would have done it first.
+Fabian Hansen And battery-life for the book's tablet mode - I know it might be a lot to ask, but I would definitely want more than 3 hours!
gotta say Norm is getting really good at making videos. Also I want a Surface 4 from Santa
Best hand on vid so far. Really cool to see the pen cutaway and opened up Surface Book too.
Wait, does this mean that you can't fully close the Surface Book? There seems to be a gap between the keyboard and the screen when it is closed. I wonder what's going to happen when one applies pressure to it... like how the laptop would normally would be pressured when it's in the bag.
Love this camera angle; review well done ;O)-
+Corvaire Wind Sarcasm? Sorry I can't tell. That was a terrible camera angle, you couldn't even tell the size differences between the devices and the focus was terrible.
Suchir Kavi no, not sarcasm. How ever I did notice that portion and didn't really care. Seeing as there is probably another 20 people behind him waiting to do reviews, some shots you just have to live with.
Nice. How long before the Pro 3 drops in price?
entry level surface pro 4 in Australia $1,349... Fuck my exchange rate
Yep, we get bent over every time, it's fucked!
+KidSavesTheWorld -Again to upgrade my i7 SP3 to the equivalent model would cost around $1000. Looks like im going to have to settle for the new type cover in the mean time
+KidSavesTheWorld -Again I've heard that it can be cheaper to fly to US and pick up hardware then it is to buy it in Aus.
+Simon Maslaveckas it definitely can be
+KidSavesTheWorld -Again i feel u bro in my country 1 us dollar = 3.9 lei
The surface book looks amazing!
How do you get the job "camera cable holder"? I need work...
+Ex EddieB You can't get job as camera cable holder. You have to born as camera cable holder.
+Ex EddieB Camera assistant for live events. Cable bashing is a pretty important job, you don't want your steadicam operator tripping over the cable or it snagging on something and losing signal.
did anyone else see the guy on the apple computer in the back😂😂😂
+Timo swims Media is always iWashed, there is nothing new in it?
Illuminati confirmed
+Timo swims Next year it'll be the Surface Book.
+Matthew Mills I agree, I had the same thought.
+Timo swims OOH MY GOD! Did you see the guy with the MacBook in the background. WOW! Apple is so awesome! :):(:)

At 5:45 begins the "Hands-On" for Surface pro 4 and 8:06 for Surface Book -.-
The irony of a Microsoft product presentation being run from a Macbook Pro is awesome.
I'm getting the Lumia 950 once it comes out. On the fence about the Surface Book. Main thing is can it handle streaming games onto Twitch/RUclips.
loved macbooks but this surface book is really a work of art. have to get one
good video. been using macs for about 5 years now. i think I'll finally revert back to windows next year.
0:06 A Macbook photobombing the Microsoft event
Damn that Surface Book for Photoshop work just might be my Christmas present!!
excellent video. Very informative
This "I dont want to pay for the work and quality I get, because everything is cheap as hell and destroys the market/job wages, but hey its just competition and I like it cheap" makes me sick. If you want it, safe money and buy it when you can affort it, like in good old times.
Which one would you think is better for illustrating, Adobe, and video editing
I wouldn't mind if they had kept the surface the same thickness maybe even half a mm thicker. also the old pen magnets to the side of the pro 3, it works pretty well if you use the shirt clip part

Great review! Very in-depth.
Best video/review of the surface book online
Pretty extensive for a media event hands on review. Good job!
Can you use a external graphic card on surfaces? or you really need a thunderbolt on ? can you have usb connected to a thunderbolt and use a external graphic card?
When you were using the pen in laptop mode it looked a bit flimsy. Any concerns there?
Like the super quality of the Surface Book. Also the pen, fitness band and 950 XL. Some talk of software in the pipeline for using the pen to write on the screen of 950XL?
Is the new Type Cover with an upgrade for the Pro 3? How much better is the track pad.?I find the Type Cover 3 trackpad almost unusable.
I only got to use it for a few minutes, but the the new glass trackpad feels really nice and is larger than the one on previous type covers. These new ones will work with SP3
+Tested Sounds like a huge improvement. Thats the only significant weakness on the SP3, IMO. Thanks.
+Tested Great! I plan on getting it for my SP3.
Great job Norm, thanks much...one question though, I saw what looked like cutaways that exposed the guts of the Surface, is this common (perhaps it is, but I've not viewed many review videos) ?

@Arnie Calang I've read it was there for comparison purposes.
are the cameras in the new Surface devices Pureview now (post-Nokia acquisition)?.
That Surface Book is freaking awesome! It'll be interesting to see how that hinge holds up after a couple years :)
+sinephase And what it evolves into when new models are released!
which is more high end the pro4 or the book? with both having core i7 I didn't understand which one was the more powerful one
+Eddie Amaya The book, but it's due to the gpu mostly. Processor/memory options are essentially the same.
The Surface Book has the GPU on the keyboard dock so you'll not have the full capability without the keyboard
I'm still a bit puzzled by these surface devices. what do you think of the M3 processor of surface pro 4? Some people said that this processor is not suit for new surface.
Really good Hands-on!!!
Hope that latch system crosses generations
By the way 1080p is not a FULL SIZE DISPLAY any more.
As always a geat video, Norm.

Thanks
LOL 3:55 iPad pro is not even in the same level as the Surface 3/ Pro 3 to be considered competition
+Kevin Surjanto Yet I can't wait for the iPad Pro! November is just around the corner!
Exactly so idk what you would be waiting for other than an overpriced gigantic device
Kevin Surjanto because it works for me.
+Kevin Surjanto wow you're SO funny
Nothing holds up to Intel these days. iPads will never outperform the Surface, unless Apple starts putting Intel in their iPads.
Thanks. :)
+Brandon Mahoney macbook pro and a wacom
the guy with the macbook in the background is a legend
Hello :) Want to buy this but need help!
If I use inking to annotate a word document created on surface, if I open the word doc on my iMac, will the ink annotations disappear?
i don't get it. is it touchscreen available or you have to use the pen?
Is the surface 4 pro good enough to handle a lot of school work and web surfing. Also, is can it stream xbox games?
So i'm confused as to why you'd get a Surface Pro 4 at all now? If the Surface Book works at full laptop performance when you're just turning it 180 degrees and connecting it so you're basically in tablet mode but whilst connected to the gpu, why would anyone want a Surface Pro 4 instead of a Surface Book? (Not considering people who are after super lightweight and tiny tablets) I might have missed something, i don't exactly know much about pc's and shit but yea this is bugging me
The Surface Book is just a beast in a compact size.
As someone who grew up in the 90s, it is so weird to see microsoft become one of the most interesting companies in tech. If they could only figure out how to market their stuff properly.
BUT IT'S SO EXPENSIVE, THAT SEXY SURFACE BOOK. 2700USD FOR THE 16GB RAM VERSION?? WHY
+Bryan Lee That's about 4000 AUD for us. Our pain is far greater.
Dekomori Sanae 4000AUD is around 2900 USD FOR US YOU PAYING LESS LOL
***** The 16GB RAM version (I need the RAM for video editing) is 2700, 4000AUD is much more than the US price...
Onya guys
Does this means, for the first time ever, that the surface book can have a replacable gpus? Since the gpu is on the keyboard.
Did anyone else cringe when he slammed them together? :( Jesus Christ Norm be more careful with the technology.
the video actually starts at 5:45
was there any info on what GPU they're using on the surface book?
Could you connect a more powerful gpu to the surface book using the PCIe lanes in the keyboard connection?
My only disappointment is the 3 hours battery from the Surface Book when detached.
I really liked the idea of this being a tablet akin to a surface pro, just larger, and then slotted into the base it becomes a beast laptop.
This guy is really doing serious business.
Does the pen come with the surface book?
Is Norm coming to nycc????
Oh, what a coincidence the had an event while you were there.
Nice I am really liking the look of the Surface Book.
In a rush were you? LOL
is the 3 hours of the tablet only mode confirmed? I heard it was 6/6
Confirmed, and that's microsoft's claim. they also won't charge each other.
+Smadonno The $500 is for the keyboard with it's extra batteries and Laptop useability. Having that solid keyboard is a big deal.
I really wish they would come up with a better pen storage solution. I'm going to rely on a magnet when I throw my Surface into my bag?
This is an awesome looking laptop with some cool tech, but I can't help wondering who this is for exactly. It is too cost prohibitive for students and to fringe for the majority of business professionals who from what I've seen get computers from their company. I just don't understand where the laptop fits into the market. I feel similarly about the surface pro 4.
The ipad pro is nowhere near a competitor to the surface pro line, once it starts running a full os instead of a mobile os, then it'll be a competitor.
