    Why does the portrayal of mental health in movies matter?

    • @mPOWword
      @mPOWword Год назад +3

      It hugely matters as movies have the power to educate, bring awareness, influence and change attitudes in people. Also there are more watchers than readers in the world. Maintaining a healthy mind is key for a happy life.

      Ved is like a just a normal Millennials and he connects hard to our struggles. Yes, I am way too dramatic around few peoples. But then, the whole civilized society pushes us to be responsible and accepts other's authority which we can't. Come on, a whole new generation is here who is more informed and aware than the authorities around us. So, there will be more Ved unless we are set free and being trusted to take our own responsibilities rathan than pushing from elder' bad influences 17:26

      I am compelled to state that some of his statements are deeply problematic especially absorption within traditional (well, he draws a binary of urban and rural) familial systems. There are inherent violence of those systems especially assimilation does not enhance appreciation or even recognition of plural ways of being😢

    The way he was so careful about not using 'bipolar' term shows how much mature he is as a director. Otherwise directors nowadays glorify a shitty and morally ill character and then they are not even ready to take responsibility and accept that films do have influence on people

    • @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar
      @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 4 месяца назад +1

      I may be way off, but I have a feeling that after the movie’s release, Imtiaz may have been urged (wisely) not to use the term “bipolar” in anything but a clinical context. I say this because the word is used multiple times in the actual movie, just not directly about Ved. Instead, it’s said in unusual contexts, as if deliberately planted, like clues. I’m wondering if Imtiaz meant it colloquially, almost as a shorthand to help viewers understand Ved’s erratic behavior, but then was later counseled against calling the character as bipolar, since Ved is never professionally diagnosed as such, he doesn’t appear to meet the clinical criteria, etc. Otherwise, it’s weird that the word would appear in the script at all, much less more than once.

    I am a clinical psychology graduate. I can't disagree with Imtiaz Ali responses. It is impressive that he is accountable of his stories and how he accepts that he is not technically sound to make diagnosis of mental health condition. Diagnosis of mental health problems can/should only be done from the professionals who are trained and authorized for assessment. I am against making mental health condition fancy and self diagnosis, because I have seen many people with little information labelling themselves and others, also many people (especially adolescents/young adults) catostrophizing instead of taking support and doing self-care.
    I see film making as a team work, every person from audio engineer, light person, producer, actors, cinematographer, musician and many faces we don't see make it and a good director possess qualities of a good leader/facilitator who can can bring all the team together to tell his story/stories. I think Imtiaz Ali did brilliant job in some of his movies, especially Tamasha. Whilst I see Tamasha now from different perspective from before, as I want to see the after story of Ved and other sides of Tara as how she became the person as seen in the movie. Tamasha has flaws like we all have but it is a beautiful story.

    Before Jab we met, there was a fixed pattern of writing romcoms. From. 2007 the scenario completely changed. Aditya and Geet are two of my most fav characters of all time. We can't even imagine then to make a love story with protagonist as female and supporting actor as male. He broke it. And with Rockstar, highway & Tamasha he set new boundaries. Though some of the traits of jordon can be defined as toxic still that film is an emotion for me when i was in college in 2011, Rahman & Mohit classics. And Highway & Tamasha are two of his best films according to me. Ved is me, I am ved. Imtiaz Sir, waiting for your next. Please don't make films like Jab harry met sejal or love aaj kaal 2. Regards, A huge fan of yours ❤
