The controversy over The Verve's song Bittersweet Symphony.
They should have gotten the rights back WAY sooner.
They used a copy of someone else's song and it got popular... They're supposed to make the money off someone else's beat ? Thats called copyright
@@1BigDaDo 🤓
The stones should have scoffed at the idea of taking a hit from a young band in the 90s. The stones were mega stars with more money then they could even count but was never enough
Agreed, the stones were greedy.
@@laurencedavey3121 it wasn’t the stones, it was their manager.
Damn that’s a bittersweet symphony
😆👍
Like the Stones needed the money.
The Stones and management are mammon dicks. Just give them their props and should feel good that they did good work with the track
Kind of beautifully ironic how this song that went on to be a massive global hit worth millions, written about being a slave to money and struggling to make ends meet, earned the band nothing. The sentiment is no less strong though all these years later, it's a genuine masterpiece.
Thanks Mick! After 20 years of taking their millions of dollars.
No shit 👍
As if the Stones actually needed the money !
@@jamesbarbour8400- Seriously. What do they do, wipe their asses with Benjamins? Give me a break.
@@Peekay9 yes they probably do ! You can go on your break now boy.
One if the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard
Try Sonet or Lucky man. ❤️
Nice Stones. You took 100% of the revenue for 20 years, and then when there was virtually no more revenue coming in, you gave it back to them? Classy move guys.
POS's!!!

Shakespeare has an apt phrase "It is excellent to have a giant's strength but tyrannous to use it as one". Keith Richards said the Verve stole bread out of the Rolling Stones mouth....staggering. Quite a lot of music has echoes of other tunes. Pity they should have re-arranged the song....6 seconds, not worth the pain
That whole thing ruined a great band that was somewhat ahead of it’s time in terms of revivalist rock
Anyway The Verve's bitter sweet symphony is better than any of the original ones.
Alan Klein was a real sleazeball
he's a jew. Stereotypes are true
@@tomasolsson6493 And you're a putz
@@tomasolsson6493 ouch😢😅
@@tomasolsson6493yep, thays how stereotypes come about, there's some truth in them.
He Kleined them out.
He said it was the best song the Stones didn’t write.
Bitter Sweet Symphony" is based on a sample from a 1965 version of the Rolling Stones song "The Last Time" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra. The Verve added strings, guitar, percussion and vocals. They obtained rights to use the "Last Time" sample from the copyright holder, Decca Records, but were denied permission from the Rolling Stones' former manager, Allen Klein. Following a lawsuit, the Verve relinquished all royalties and the Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were added to the songwriting credits. In 2019, after Klein's death, Jagger, Richards and Klein's son ceded the rights to the Verve songwriter Richard Ashcroft.
I heard a Keith Richards interview where he said he didnt want their money, he thought it was cool, he wasnt gonna sue em
But then he heard or read that Ashecroft was asked about it in the press, and said 'Fuck Keith Richards.'
Instead of some expression of gratitude or acknowledgement-
So Keith didnt bother to help them.
He said he remebered how it was at that stage in HIS career.
Something like that.
@@TheEDZEPPELINBAND I seriously doubt that Ashecroft EVER was that much of a douche to say 'Fuck Keith Richards' unless he was drunk or on drugs. But it's ALL history now. Keith is usually pretty cool about most things. That's just how Keith has always been. Yet regarding Jagger NOT so much. He's straightedge business.
@@GOLDENFLYWARRIOR well he was.
Yet another reason(there's a looong list) I hate the record industry. Publishers and labels are evil parasites.
Was an absolute travesty that the verve were robbed of this so many of our best bands were robbed this way 😢
Put this banger on full blast tonight 🦋
Yes indeed, I am at it right now🦋🙏🏼🪷
I remember hearing this when I was in summer school in '97. I read about this in the early 2020s and I hated discovering how The Verve got screwed. How did it take 21 years to get any publishing from its biggest hit?!
Well, it sounds horrible saying this, but when Allen Klein passed away, they renegotiated with his son, and they got the rights back
I'm sure the band could have used the money to support their families and group longevity for those 20 fuggin' years. I hope they got it all back with lost interest plus pain and suffering. That's the greatest track to come out of the whole 90's britpop movement.
So kind of them to give it back now that it’s not making any money. 🙄
I was thinking the exact same thing. How douche-y.
@@Jen-X333 Hey !!! They gave it back . Do you know how long they could have fought that . Really with the money they have . Richard's has been on record for longer then 2 decades saying that sampling is stealing . And it is not a very artistic thing to do . The song belong to the writer's Kieth and Mick and the band the Stones . You can't steal someone's beat . Period I will correct you . How kind of them . Your welcome .
For real. Greedy pricks. Like Jagger and Richards needed money AT ALL.
@@angelicbean7635 And I will correct you. *You're* not *Your*. You're welcome.
@@angelicbean7635 You are really condoning this? 6 seconds. 6 fing seconds.
Let the song be free plz this is MY FAVORITE SONG
It really is a bittersweet symphony
The song is mostly for the lyrics. But the song from the same album called “The Drugs don’t Work” (the live version is the best) is an amazing but depressing song about losing his dad to cancer and has a double meaning about being depressed after a failed relationship
The irony is that " The will be the last time" was a rip off of the staple singers song from the late 1950s. . . .
What song?
What a legal battle that was . I just love that song !
Dam 20 years with no money from that song? Ik I would’ve been pissed af SMH
Not technically the touring off that song made them ALOTTTTT
There's a special hole in hell for publishers! Like Jagger and Richards needed that shit anyway....
I'm going to listen to the Rolling Stones' song but you already said it was obscure. The Verve turned that riff into a total classic. That really gives props to The Rolling Stones and shows genius and attention to detail for The Verve. Great video too. 😎👍
Today i found out Richard ashcroft is my second cousin
Also, it’s the label’s fault for not getting the clearance in the first place
Oh yes they did get a licence to use it. After the song became a smash then The Stones record company boss came calling with a legal team.
I listen to this song at night before I go to sleep. It’s soul moving in my book.
Damn that's brutal.
The sample didn’t even add that much. It was in the background and added ambience. The song still sounds great without it.
When I was still on active duty and stationed in the Middle East, this song played multiple times a day, every day. Not sure why.
Why is Jagger dancing to his lawyers tune? He could have overidden him
Verve is my fave ❤
Richard Ashcroft just did a live set that's on RUclips and the set is INCREDIBLE

Alan Klein!! The Verve should have asked Paul McCartney for assistance in dealing with him!
One of the most recognizable track of ALL TIMES
I've got dirt on my Reeboks from staying up all night.
Wow, I didn’t realize this song was that old. Interesting story
One of the best bands of all time
That's sad. I was jamming this last night.
One of my favorites!
A most excellent tune...! 🌼
The Verve live onstage are unbelievably good.
Love The Verve and The Rolling Stones!
Complex issue. What would Jesus Christ ultimate rockstar say? I know him personally. He said that the Stones should have workedout a deal where Ashcroft got some kind of profit sharing. He said they should have all gone to a Pub for a pint, or two…or three and figured something out. Then shake hands, tell douchebag Klein to write it up and make it legal. No kidding, thats what Jesus said. 😊
😂😂😂😂
Verve needs to thank PUBLIX SUPERMARKET for the Revitalized great song
Thanks for letting me know
The Rolling Stones “bumped” into Richard Ashcroft!!😂😂
My favorite song ever
Atok kaKEK
Aka tokek 😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks for your video
GOD bless everyone
Barakallah fiikum 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
How gracious of the stones…
They asked Richard ashcroft, what he thought about the song nominated for a award ,he said it was the best stone's song from the last 20 years
In other words F... ..f to them
For the band, sucess of this song would've been Bittersweet. I'll show myself out😂
I bought the album and was a little bit disappointed that the rest of the album didn't sound anything like it but it does have good songs on it mostly about drugs and how bad they are
This song is EPIC One of the best songs of the decades. Alan Klein karma will come bite you.
Thats pretty sad.
They would’ve gotten artist royalties, but not publishing, so they have made money from it
That song was inspired!
From my understanding they didn't steal shit......they got permission to use 6 seconds of a beat done by Rolling Stones and then completed the song lyrics themselves!
Listen to the original.
The worst production decision ever was the use pf this sample...without the prchestra bit, this is prpbably the greatest song ever written... with it, it is a headache
The rhythm and melody come from the last time by the Andrew Oldham orchestra.
Too little too late
Un himno nacional esta canción beatiful 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Poor Jagger didn’t have enough money😅
I love that song
F*ck it. They have so many great songs.
I just saw them perform in Springfield, MA, 2 days ago. They didnt perform this song. I wonder if they still have to pay royalties for playing it?
I just found the song im 63 2 weeks ago
Waiting till 2018 is a bigger spit in the face than if he just never gave the rights back at all
Is this why I don't see them in yt search?
I liked the video
File: Mick Jagger
Education: London school of economics
Questions, anyone?
Meanwhile Vanilla Ice:
Richard Ashcroft & The Verve were undoubtedly going to be millionaires with this song....and The Stones should be ashamed they waited so long to relinquish the rights....Alan Klein wrong to be so ruthless..
Mick & Keith gave them the rights to it as soon as they could. Everyone had to wait for Allen Klein to die and go to hell.
That's nice the Stones gave the rights away to The Verve. They probably thought this poor little band compared to us, they need the royalties more than us. 😂
WOW! 😮😮😮😮
Mick and Keith had to wait until after that slimeball Allen Klein died in order to make things right with Richie Ashcroft. Besides relinquishing the publishing rights back to him, they literally gave him $2.75 million, which is how much Richie and the band had lost out on because of Allen Klein's ruthlessness. No matter what else you think of Jagger and Richards, they proved, right then and there, that they are indeed and in-fact stand up guys, and they definitely did the right thing here.
F the stones for this. The verve was a far better band although no one in America ever got to find that out. The verve made art the stones made pop, with maybe 10 good songs as exceptions.
Симфония и экзистенция. ❤❤❤
Greediness of stones, poor Verve very sad it’s ruined their wonderful band (
took them long enough
I didn't think you needed permission to use a 6 second sample??
Another reason to hate the stones
It's a gamble you don't know what song will be a hit. This is a perfect example of don't use a sample.
Yeah hands em over now it aint making change. 😢 That's a bittersweet symphony. ...work like a slave all day ...working for money Working until u die 😢
Too late, damage is done.
“Jayger” ?
Wait they stole the sample from decca and the stones to start with. They are lucky they ever got the rights . . The only time I remember hearing this in the 90 was on soft serve🍦rock stations and elevator music. Seriously folks. And the euro crowd thinks this is the best r r song ever?????
Great song wow the music business is money hungry not good
They wonder why rock died, rappers reuse their stuff all of the time
If it was the stones filing lawsuit for original song sure. But a cover!??? Get bent
C'mon keef what were you hurting for money? Tighten up.
..... bummer
Stones = the rolling stnuC.
Sweet
It's unfortunate, but that's what happens when you take other people's work instead of creating your own.
Greed is real 😂😂😂
Very interesting bubbie...thank you
YES SIR
Fuck the rolling stones idgaf about boomer millennial nostalgia
Wow ,just wrong
