  • I fly off to the Indonesian city of Pontianak, also known as Equator City due to its location on zero-degrees longitude.
To stand on the equator has long been on my bucket list and, in Pontianak (incidentally, named after the vampire witches who once resided there) I finally got the chance.
As well as the Equator Monument I see the following things:
    Kapuas River Cruise
    Landak Bridge
    Digulis Monument
    Alun Alun Kapuas
    St. George's Cathedral
    Kadriah Palace
    Rumah Adat Radakng Dayak
    Grand Mosque

I've been living there for 5 years, a city of diversity. Malay, dayak, thiong hoa, and the others ethnic living in harmony. People smile at each other.
And the sun right above us. It's extremely hot sometimes but since kalimantan is a green island and known as the lung of Indonesia, you won't feel the burn.
One thing I also remember about this place is the smell of rubber from a factory in "Siantan" area

When the Chinese were brought over to Kalimantan in the 18 and 19 century, Indonesia was a Dutch colony. Meaning they were most probably brought over by the Dutch. Thank you very much and kind regards, fsw

At minute 2:05 duh.. There's "Bonjol" The Equator monument on "Pasaman" regency of West Sumatra.
But, if you're a city person, the area and surrounding are less interesting for city lovers.
    It's more for nature lover.
Natural beauty of West Sumatra and the whole Sumatra, Borneo, whole Indonesia are astonishing.

the original monument is not exactly on the equator because back then the measuring technology that was used wasn't very accurate...
the real equator is actually across the monument, follow the green path out of the monument to the blue globe..

13:13 yes, traditional meeting house for traditional ceremonia events of the "Dayak" tribe.
In fact every tribe in Indonesia has such building.
Why don't you try visit "Taman Mini" in Jakarta.
It's mini version of Indonesia, a little clue about Indonesian provinces and islands was built in late 1960's and one of my favourite places in Jakarta since I was born.

First time there was late 90s for me, I don't think they had seen to many Westerns at that time, they were queuing to have a photo with me.LOL. Friendly people but you need to be more careful walking back to your hotel by yourself at night, that was very dangerous thing to do in that part of the world especially for a western.

In Indonesian mythology it’s called Kuntilanak. In Malay it’s called Pontianak, and that’s actually what the city is named after (because Pontianak is a Malay Sultanate territory).

Hi i am from west borneo. Maybe i can explain a little bit. Most of the native borneo are the dayak people most are Catholic. They are converted by the Ducth missionaries during the Ducth colonial era. This Cathedral was build not long ago to replace the old catedral building by the local governor which is also a dayak.
Btw, the best from Pontianak is the culinary, one of the kind. 😁
