We use washed construction sand in our coops. Not the play sand. The construction sand is more coarse. We use a kitty litter scoop to scoop poop out daily. The poop gets saved in a bucket and when full gets dumped in veggie gardens in the winter or in the compost. 2 X 4 lumber is used for roosting boards and the boards are laid flat for a bigger roost area. Chickens dont roost normally where they curl there feet. A flatter surface allows them to roost comfortably and cover there feet with there body. We did roosting shelves with a 2 x 4 on the edge. The roosting shelf has sand on it and use a rake to pull off the poop and sift with a kitty liter scooper. We do a deep liter method in the run area and it gets dug out every spring to add to the veggie gardens.

Thank you for the information, I haven't heard of roosting shelves before. It sounds like a good idea especially during winter. Thank you for watching and for the information. Hugs
