I agree on the weight issue. I carried the sitka on a 6 mile hike and my shoulder was killing me. Did not have that much weight in it either.Sold it on ebay the next week. I now use the monsoon , it carries very well and can take more weight with less fatigue. I am giving up the pockets but thats ok. I have a med kit and a pocket maxpedition for other stuff. I am thinking of adding a Janus to the side of the monsoon.
I bought this bag a long time ago and haven’t used it. I count this as sort of an instruction manual. Thanks. It’ll work for what I want, but understand its limitations. Wish you were still making vids. Hope things are going well.
Howdy.I happen to have this bag and love it.Use it for fly fishing all the time.It was uncomfortable at first.but I rigged up a 1.5" waist belt .This make all the difference in the world. There's already a hole on the left side,I make a slit on the right side and ran a belt thru.Put a couple of squeeze rivets each side.Works good. Also cut stitches at bottom of water bottle holder to slide in my fly rod case. When not hauling the case it still holds a nalgene bottle securely.Good vid keep it up.tks
KevinDufflev I like your mods to the pack. That's the great thing about possessing those skills - you can personalize gear to your specific needs or desires. Thanks for watching. -Krik
To preface, Im a security officer at a high security facility and we all have personal packs that we basically live out of for 12 hour shifts. Ive had the Monsoon pack for a few years, and for the most part I like it but Im giving this a go since it feels like time to switch it up a bit. My only gripe about the Monsoon is the goofy shape makes it a bit tricky to pack about 90 percent of the time which was tolerable. Hopefully this one negates that. I do like that Maxpedition is very thoughtful about these things, although I do usually take a knife to some stuff when I get one (I do that to boot linings too. Weird habit I guess). Some of the straps and tags and rotary girders are just a bit overkill. And for anyone thats wondering, it just makes sense to take these damn things off to access them. Sling packs honestly arent super high speed to use while moving - which realistically is fine for most of mankind, pipe dreams excluded. One big tip is to buy electrical tape, roll up the excess straps, and tape the excess into a roll. Im sure theres videos that depict it better, but it cleans stuff up alot. Sling bags do help when wearing rifles and ammo pouches IMO, because you can unbuckle the pack and flop it off easier, which is why I default to them. Regular packs make me feel claustrophobic with all the horsesh- we wear.
wow thank you so so much for pointing out your issue with the weight distribution problem. i am skeptical too about how the sitka can support weights like laptops on just a single strap. this video has really addressed my issue. many thanks !
I have a cheap Wal-Mart version of this bag. (Lower quality material, zipper etc.) But pretty much identical layout. I do have it set up as my edc bag so I am not wearing it for long distances but I believe that is really the plan for this bag. With the pockets laid out the way they are I think the idea was for frequent access not long distance comfort. My cheapy also has a longer tall on the strap so I can extend it before I rotate it around so it hangs lower for ease of access. Nice review.
I just want to caution that depending on how much weight you plan on carrying, the bag can be very uncomfortable if worn for extended periods of time. Granted, wearing any type of bag for extended periods of time will cause some sort of fatigue, but this sling bag causes discomfort pretty quick. And if you saw from the video, I didn't have too much in the bag. Any more weight and it wouldn't have been tolerable. -Krik
I've used this pack for short day hikes. Great pack to carry essentials and pistol. I've had no problems with shoulder but I do not recommend more than 15lbs in it.
I am thinking this may be your best review so far. I like your attitude and approach to things. Completely agree about those sling packs and ergonomics. Lots to like about that bag though.
Thorough review.Need to list the pros and cons instead of all the items you keep in it.I've been searching for the right bag, preferably a gearslinger on Amazon and still haven't found one.Mayby I should go with a backpack type,
I have a Maxpedition Versapack Mongo and really love it for day to day carry. I really don't like taking it into the woods because once it has a load, my shoulder tires much quicker than with a backpack.
I have a 5.11 rush 72 for a BoB / camping bag but have been thinking of something like this for edc. I always need Kleenex's or other gear and never have it with me... especially with my daughter.
So in your opinion, is there any pack on the market that has the same form factor, durability, etc, but doesn't have the ergonomic problems of the sitka?
Damn outstanding pack! I have the red rock sling bag. Not bad for what it does for little bit of money. However the life span on the redrock sling bag won't last more than a year due to I pack them with lots of stuff for work such as lunch and other necessities. But, this bag will full fill my expectations and needs!
I have the same. Good enough for very short trips. You can't put comfortably much incide because of the bad incide organization. And you can't carry more than 5kg weight in it because of the sling construction. It's ideal for lightweight urban EDC kit.
You do a fine job reviewing the bag, but it is a "sling" type bag and not a backpack. Your complaint about the bag not having a waist belt etc. is because the bag is not designed to carry a lot of weight. I would not review a Corvette and complain that it can't pull my camper or run in the mud.
Yes, I understand it's a sling bag. And that it's not comfortable when carrying a lot of weigh. But I don't understand why you'd make a bag that's large enough to carry a decent amount of gear, but when you have it full, it's uncomfortable. That's where I'm coming from. Either way, thanks for watching and commenting. -Krik
I had it once it's okay, I would say is more for traveling or sight seeing while your on vacation or morning jogs that you don't need a fanny pack that you put your wallet, house keys, snacks, your cell phone, eye glasses, your hat, a towel, a light jacket or your headphones.
I had it, it's a good sling back, but for me it was made more for light carrying items, spring and summer use or an emergency use like place it in car 😊
Maxpedition should bring out a version of this pack with a zipper pocket on the side in place of the water canteen holder because the Sitka has room for a 3 litre water bladder and I think a large pocket on the side would be handy for extra mags when I'm at the range or out shooting Roos (Kangaroos)
Thank you, nice review. I don't think this is meant to be a "hiking" backpack or a load bearing pack. I feel it is more geared toward EDC i.e. commuting to work and bringing some essential survival gear JIC ;)
We checked them out. Dang, those are expensive. Everything we've reviewed so far has been purchased by either Stony or I. A Goruck bag is just too expensive right now. -Krik
Oh man dont get me wrong but your main complaint is actually reasonable since you packed literally your whole house in your bag :D ... I am really into this bag for school and police academy style purposes .. and by the way really good video!!
Yea I think the mongo is too large in relation to the hip belt being used on the bag. The Jumbo versipack is much better suited for the 1 inch hip belt. I still believe that the weight of any bag should be held with the hips. A single shoulder strap is fine to just stabilize the bag. -Krik
I have the big brother to this bag, the kodiak, and I have always felt it was the perfect bag from an organizational standoint, but it wore uncomfortably. if only they had made it a two strap backpack.
if you haven't already, check out our playlists to see all of the videos we've done so far. it makes it far easier than wading through the uploads. and fear not, we have a bunch more video ideas planned to shoot. Thanks for watching! - Stony
to carry all the weight on one shoulder prefer my little noatak's more. and to carry more weight my condor. Sorry if my English is bad but I am using a translator.
Great review and I think you a lot of great reviews; but I think the concept of the 'sling bag' type of pack you're not getting. Basically, it's man purse. It's a light duty pack that can be access many of times during a trip with out taking it off. It has a lot of compartments to help organize items. I do agree with you on a lot of things you said about it, but just think man purse. lol (Peace)
They also should have centered the back strap so it does not flop on your back on the opposite side of the strap. The Malaga does not do that for example.
check out Everything-out-there in eBay stores. They make an excellent copy of the Maxpedition sitka with 2 straps. It is better quality than those cheap $20 packs.I have to say after owning a sitka, the mono strap was uncomfortable after wearing it with any weight in.Comparison and quality between the 2 bags is minimal, and of course there is the price.you can buy 3 of these for the price of one maxpedition bag because It sells for $49.99 with free shipping!
It is a shame that Maxpedition would use cheap plastic buckles. I may replace mine with a steel buckle. However, I must say that I will in no way endorse or recommend Maxpedition. I will have no other choice but to tell anyone in my industry that the buyer should be aware that cheap parts are in no way. supported or covered. I will not buy Maxpedition again. It just is not worth the money. Cheap parts and no support.
Yes and no. Ive never liked being a company billboard, but Maxpedition packs that Ive had have always lasted years of daily use. Youll go through a few others in the same timeframe as material and stitching craps out. Sometimes it pays to shell out a bit extra at the getgo.
yes i understand what your saying chap, however what with so much really good surplus around these days there is no reason to blow a lot of cash on a bag, not when your on a tight budget anyway, Regards, Bob
OH I wouldn't say priorities chap . I'm just tight fisted at a genetic level but i know for the price of some of the "Branded" gear (one item)you can kit yourself out pretty well allround

very informative review. You touched upon all the things that I wanted to know about this product that other reviewers didn't. Thank you.

thankyou so much for mentioning your height. no other review i've seen has done that. great review.
good vid. nice topics for discussion and pretty good work by the camera person also. its the same color I'm thinking of buying as well. thumbs up.

I love the idea of these bags, but had some of the concerns about distribution of weight. Thank you for the review
Good review. Can you attach a Maxpedition Janus pocket to that?
I have a 5.11 rush 72 for a BoB / camping bag but have been thinking of something like this for edc. I always need Kleenex's or other gear and never have it with me... especially with my daughter.

nice video quality & color adjustment~
Outstanding review... great job guys
Nice review. look forward to every video
This videos look amazing. What do you guys do for colour correction because I can't seem to get the same feel...
I really enjoy your videos, you should do a review on the Goruck bags you should be able to find their website online
Cool pack... Nice review
nice setting for the video and thanks for comparing the size of the bag to your 5'9 height. really helpful

Torn between this edgepack and vanquest javelin 3.0 can’t make up my damn mind 🤣 which one I built to last? Opinions?
Should have gone with the falcon or condor?
Would you recommend this or the javelin slinger

That may be the case. And I think the bag itself is designed great. It's just not comfortable where ever someone decides to wear it. -Krik
Hey do you think this can hold a text book and 2 binders?
Can you fit a Klean Kanteen wide-mouth 40oz bottle in the pouch ?
Maxpedition should bring out a version of this pack with a zipper pocket on the side in place of the water canteen holder because the Sitka has room for a 3 litre water bladder and I think a large pocket on the side would be handy for extra mags when I'm at the range or out shooting Roos (Kangaroos)

How is access to your firearm
I think this bag is more kind of Urban EDC Bag. For the bus, subway, park, beach...than for a wilderness hike.
to carry all the weight on one shoulder prefer my little noatak's more. and to carry more weight my condor. Sorry if my English is bad but I am using a translator.

hard to watch with your camera person, too much zoom and movement
Black owl...yet there is a penguin for the emblem, I don't get it

Its not a hiking bag. Its really a EDC carry bag, but really for the range. If im carryingz itll be on my person
Is that Ken Susi from Unearth? lol

too many zoom ins and zoom outs, Love the pack
Why does this look like the beginning of a slasher movie
I cant hear you, turning off now.
far too expensive for what it is

A fair point, sir. I know all too well what its like when change is trim. Cant fault someone with sensible priorities.
OH I wouldn't say priorities chap . I'm just tight fisted at a genetic level but i know for the price of some of the "Branded" gear (one item)you can kit yourself out pretty well allround
Walmart has their fieldline sling pack which is just this but cheaper
