  • Curious how ‪@calgarypolice‬ are working to improve transit safety?
Data shows that increased enforcement and visible presence does have a positive short-term impact, but it is not a long-term solution and often just pushes social disorder caused by mental illness and addiction into other parts of the community.
Only 5% of the people police deal with on transit have caused harm that warrants charges. The other 95% are typically vulnerable people in need of supports.
The Service recently presented to our Commission on how they are working to better address "high system users" on transit - meaning those who have frequent interactions with law enforcement, social agencies, healthcare and other social services.
The first step was to improve the data available to frontline officers. The next step is to continue collaborating with ‪@thecityofcalgary‬, ‪@AHSChannel‬, and other community supports through a joint management team.
The team is working together to both address immediate transit safety needs and find long-term solutions to help those struggling with poor mental health and addiction.
