St George's University is one of the universities in London which offers a whole array of medical courses, and today I am interviewing Jack on his experience of studying biomedical sciences as well as giving you a tour of the campus, the student unions, library, hand out spots and a tour of the hospital itself. I also studied biomedical sciences at newcastle university, however my course was not accredited by the institute of biomedical sciences, where as Jack's course was. So here I ask Jack a bunch of questions about his university experiences, accreditation and what studying at st. george's was really like!

Hey Atousa, I recently came across your channel and find your videos very interesting and helpful. I wanted to ask for your advice on how biomedical science was structured, the different ways you learnt and possible ways to organise your learning materials (notes, handouts etc). I start studying biomedical science at Northumbria university sometime in the next few weeks and don't know how to plan around how I will learn at uni xxxx

That's a really good question! I will make a note of this and make a video answering this! thank you for the comment :)

He actually did in the footage, but I was like 'no dude this is so weird' and edited it out hahahah - clearly a mistake for the hard core St George's fans!

Oh I see hahaha, well on the plus side, you wouldn't want to give away too much of the cool stuff!

Hi Anthony I’m not sure if you are still studying Biomedical science since your comment was made a while ago😅but I was just wondering, as a student who plans to study Biomed at St Georges, are there any textbooks you recommend I look at, or a public specification for BSc I can have before I start? :)

@@dohanara Hi Didi, no worries! 😄 I graduated in 2019 and I'm studying medicine now, but I'm happy to answer your question 😁
I didn't use textbooks that much during the course. Usually the lectures cover what you need to know for the exams so I recommend using the lectures as your main source of information instead. However, textbooks are useful for clarifying things you may not understand or for getting more details about a topic. The ones I found particularly useful are:
      1. Molecular Biology of The Cell, by Bruce Alberts. You'll get a lot of cell biology teaching, and the lecturers referred to this book a lot throughout the course.
      2. Physiology, by Linda Costanzo (there's also a shorter 'revision guide' version named 'BRS' but I prefer the full version).
The curriculum changed quite a bit since I was there so I'm afraid I don't have access to the current specification. It probably wouldn't be that useful anyway though because the learning objectives at university are more vague than what you get in high school (they don't tell you exactly what you need to know). So I wouldn't worry too much about pre-reading before starting the course because essentially the lectures themselves are the specification. Biomedicine is very broad so you'll need the lectures to know what to focus on.
Also, most of the textbooks you'll ever need are available to borrow at the university library for free (they have multiple copies available), so you don't need to buy them unless you want a copy to keep for yourself.
Let me know if you have any more questions :)
