  • Welcome to another video with the Audi A8.
    If you are watching us you know we end up stuck with this A8 after a repair that we carried out for customer. We already ran out of options so we decided to go step by step and send components for testing instead of replacing them and hope that the fault will just go away at some point. We also finally purchase odis and the HOPES were HIGH .... this is how it goes
    Thank you for watching If you want to know what's going on daily follow us on instagram

    we replace hundreds of these starter generators a month at my dealer. its a recall campaign now, at least in the US, 27BQ. No need to drop the subframe. I remove the wheel arch liner and longitudinal member, drain the coolant, remove the boost pipe and the little inlet for it, its 3 T30's, disconnect everything from the generator. Remove the nuts, take the studs out with an extractor socket, take the bottom bolt out, loose the top one. That way you can rotate the generator forward to get better access to the hard coolant line on the back. I disconnect the engine mount actuator so the connector isn't in the way, then use a ball-ended T30 bit in a very skinny bit ratchet to get those bolts out. Pain in the ass, but doable. Then replace the studs with the same 13mm bolts that hold the front of the generator on. Once everything's buttoned back up, you close the charging contactor for the 48V, i believe this is done through battery management or central electronic but cant remember. You need 100A charger, but then you can monitor state of charge of 48V battery. They pretty much flat out refuse claims for replacing the 48V battery, I've only seen a couple techs try and do that, usually its not necessary and it holds a charge fine after that. Hope this was in some way useful.

    First fix the communication issues with the gearbox etc. The comm faults might also be the reason the alternator isnt switched on. Get a wiring diagram and check the powers/grounds on gearbox / power steering. If thats ok put a scope on the can wires, if you dont have one measure the resistance from canbus hi to canbus low. Should be 60 ohm (battery disconnected). With a active can network you should measure around 2,5V on the canbus wires.

    @qingyumu2986 4 месяца назад +5

    Hello, I'm from Audi After-sales Service Center in China. Regarding the problem you encountered, I suggest you check whether the 48V generator has a fault. If your 48V generator has been repaired, it cannot be started directly when installed on the car. You need to use a high-power charger to charge the 12V battery. When the 12V battery is fully charged, it will charge the 48V power grid through the on-board DC-DC. When the 48V battery power exceeds 25%, the 48V power grid can be reset through ODIS, and then the generator needs to be encoded before the 48V power grid can be put into use again.

    So, if you close the charge contactor in the voltage converter (DC to DC) does the vehicle charge the 48V battery when you have a battery maintainer connected? you gonna need a charger maintainer that can handle 100A load though. I have had similar issues with the RS6 48V system when the 48V generator has an inverter issue.

    Sadly this is the perfect example of why more mechanics are leaving the profession. Cars with high level electronics are now becomming like mobile phones - very disposable. I wish you guys luck with the A8, a lot of folks have suggested on various forums that it almost always comes back to the starter-generator impacting the whole electrical system, and that the system, particularly in the USA, has been an absolute nightmare with recall issued. I guess Europe really doesn't want to issue a recall.

    I will tell you my story. I went on holiday from the UK to Lithuania and I had a problem with the generator a few months ago. I just connected a small refrigerator to a 12v socket and the generator just burned out. So I thought I would have a big problem, I had to dismantle the engine, it was very difficult until we pulled it out with a generator, the only problem was the rear water pipe. I bought a new generator from an Audi dealership for €1100 and we took the old one back and gave a discount. So we installed the generator back, but the problems did not disappear, the batteries did not charge. we started looking for information on why the 48v battery is not charging. there was not much information, but we tried to charge a 12v battery, then we made a circuit from 3 batteries and a 12v charger and got a 48v charger 😀. so we charged the 48v battery with a load of 10A, put it back and the problems disappeared. I've been driving for a few months since April and everything is fine. I thank my father that he understands electricity and we were able to solve the problem together

    This will allow 48 V battery to be able to charge again. It is on when 48 V battery reach 10% SOC.

    Recently a lot of 3.0 V6 TFSI and TDI the starter generator has been going bad I’ve seen being an Audi tech. Normal check for 48v coming out the generator and normally have a fault stored ‘replace control unit’ in address 00CC or invalid data from stater alternator stored in the engine ECU. Hope this might help😊

    Adding all this hybrid junk to an already over complicated product has IMO become a joke. I’m staggered that anyone would buy these cars. Buy new ones on PCP and hand it back to Audi at three years max. The stress this is causing you cannot make this type of job worth taking on. Good luck.

  • @mustaphaessahihi1762
    @mustaphaessahihi1762 4 месяца назад

    The minimum voltage for a fully discharged 48V lithium-ion battery is typically around 40V to 42V.
    So I think if the battery in the back is discharged below that voltage, the BMS will lock itself, and it might not send the correct command to the alternator generator to start charging again.
    I had an Audi a3 with a 48v system. The car came from another shop. The battery didn't give any output voltage even with the car running. Took out the battery and checked the wiring. Everything was good. We installed another generator and activated it with odis and generator start charging again. But the voltage at that moment was around 43v and started to climb slowly.
    I don't know how long that car was setting with this problem, but you need to check that battery and make sure it has the minimum voltage ⚡️

    If your having no communication codes you need a topology of what modules are off line. Then you’ll have to check that specific bus with an oscilloscope to see if the communication network is corrupted, if it’s a corrupt signal you will have to disconnect each module one by one till the bus restores, if it’s a good signal you’ll have to see what module has lost power.

  • @richardgreen364
    @richardgreen364 4 месяца назад

    Just a quick ‘Q’ on the modules showing fault codes. Are they saying they are not there (not on the DB)? or saying there is a BIT issue? As some modules have a return line separate to the DB. I have come across similar issues working in the aerospace industry where pins in the connectors are pushed back when connected and therefore have no contact. Without seeing the tech docs can’t suggest anything else :( good luck as it will take time to go through everything.

    This type of problem will be more common as cars become "smarter" in their systems. I personally suspect this is not a wiring issue, more a communication bus issue with certain modules. The battery issue is likely related to these modules sleeping would be my guess. How you wake them up is the issue (I expect you have already disconnected the respective modules and reconnected them). I am very interested in what the resolution is. Any possibility of talking to the Audi support in Germany?

  • @ivanfletcher4671

    Is there a way to test the software interlocks for the sw system? In some systems like this there is an eprom within each CU module that all feed into the main controller. If an eprom in any module has a bad command in it's code you can get interlocked condition like this. You may have been thru these bits already....looking forward to seeing where this ends up.

    You did not have to remove the subframe at all. just use an extractor on th3 studs and then replace with regular bolts. All these generators are having a recall also
