With over 30 years of history there have been a lot of video game consoles and while most have been great some have been huge failures. Most of these were actually ahead of their time with impressive features but they all ended up doing badly for one reason or another.

where's the Wii U ?
This is failed consoles the wii u hasnt failed. it sells and has been on shelves for a couple years. nintendo just didnt make many games for it until recently.
2 years are passed: 6,5 millions
Gamecube is called a pretty much disaster in sales, and 2 years at the time sold 10 millions.
Wii U is close to a failure, just Nintendo is trying to save it (which is a good thing).

What actually sunk Sega was the Saturn, not the Dreamcast. The problem is that the Saturn was extremely hard to develop for so there was a lack of games for the system and the ones that did come were of lower quality than what it should have been able to produce. That was all fixed with the Dreamcast, however the damage was already done. The Dreamcast started it's life rather well, but once the PS2 was released it became extremely over shadowed and it lost all of it's momentum. So with the failure of the Sega CD, the 32x and then the Saturn as well, the Dreamcast would have had to be intensly successful for Sega to stay in the hardware game, so unfortunately it was pretty much set up to fail. So no, I don't see it as the top failed console ever especially since initially it sold fairly well and much better than everything else labeled on your list. I was expecting to see the 3DO, but I was happy to see the Apple.
While I agree, I think started going downhill with the Sega CD, the the 32X....
The saturn was not all bad, saw some good success in Japan , Just peolpe lost confidence in them by that time because of the flopped sega cd and 32X

I don't know about the Dreamcast being on this list. The Dreamcast sold seven million units which was not bad, but Sega ignored the wants of the American market, and failed to rebuild brand loyalty in the Japanese market after two failed 32 bit consoles. I also think omitting DVD drive was a mistake along with not enough ram. I would replace the Dreamcast with Panasonic 3DO instead, high price point, and sold less than 2 million units.
3DO? No, the Sega Saturn deserves to be on this list.

Please, do not confuse company failure with a gaming console failure. Sega Dreamcast was in my opinion (and not only) one - if not - THE best console ever created. The first who had 128bit processor, the first with 1.2Gb GD-ROM, modem, online gaming, fantastic revolutionary graphic (remember Shenmue and even DOA) and tons of games (720 to be exact) Sega didn't stand a chance against a giant like Sony, they didn't had the funds for publicity so yes, they had to pull the plug.
To conclude: company failure? perhaps. Overall, yes.
Video game console failure? Not Even Close.

To All of the idiots out there who think they know what they are talking about: The Wii U is an amazing console, it is extremely underrated. Also, just because it is not selling well doesn't mean it is a bad console. It wasn't marketed enough, thus the consumers thought that this was an add-on to the Original Wii Console. Next argument: "No Games," ugh no that's not even a problem with the system. The Wii Has Windwaker HD, Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, Pikmin 3, Nintendo Land(UNDERRATED), Super Mario 3d world, Super Mario Bros U. Also it is getting many more amazing titles, Super Smash Bros 4, Zelda U, Bayonetta 2. I can keep going about this console but this is the internet. Opinions are not allowed☺

I think the first console with a modem was the Famicom. Modem hardware was released in 1988! Nintendo was quite innovative for the time~

heidi de haan i think a huge problem with the dreamcast at the time was also the prices. the games, controllers and add ons were way overpriced when it came out. i have one myself now, had i for years actually and it still plays fantastic. i was fortunate to have a gaming store in my town go out of business and they sold all of their dreamcast stuff at ridiculous prices i got controllers and memory cards for a couple of dollars each and games for 5 and 10 dollars :)

cutemimi25 I agree, Dreamcast shouldnt be on the list. I still use mine now and my kids still love playing the games. The graphics were WELL ahead of their time. Their ONLY downfall was NOT hardware sales it was Software sales. Once it leaked out that you can download ROMS and burn them directly to a CD-R and play them on a stock DC with a Boot Loader, ALL sales hit he dirt. That was the only downfall of this console. They make their money off software and accessory sales, not console sales, and at the time, the consoles were only around the $150-$200 price range, and even in the market at that time, it was VERY reasonably priced. This console should have lived longer. Long Live Crazy Taxi!!!

Why does everybody equate "failed" with "worst"?
"Top 5 failed game consoles" means commercial failure. It has absolutely nothing to do with quality.
Dreamcast was perhaps the best and most advanced console of the time, but it still failed commercially. It's quality is not the issue here.

just about every sega console has been a failure in one way. I think the dreamcast was picked instead of (lets say) the saturn, which was notoriously hard to code for, was because the dreamcast made sega pull the plug on console development.
Honestly I would have had the #1 spot for the vaporware classic, the Phantom gaming console.
the virtual boy was more of a failure than the dreamcast, it didn't even sell 1 million units. The dreamcast sold at leas 10 million. Also the Virtual boy had a game library of like 10 maybe 15 games while the dreamcast had hundreds.
The virtual boy was, no question, but it also didn't have the impact on nintendo like the dreamcast did with sega, being a side console if anything. (and we are talking decades apart here, the term failure has to be relative to it's competition imo)
To make a company withdraw from the console industry is a big deal. Though really it wasn't the dreamcast's fault, it still gets the blame.
I love my dreamcast, I have a few backup units to boot. But when compared to it's contemporaries at the time, the ps2, xbox and gamecube the dreamcast really fell short in terms of sales and popularity.
Which is why it is seen more as a failure than lets say the 32x or sega cd. Which were add ons to a successful console. They are more comparable to the virtual boy honestly than the dreamcast.
well, if someone gets a headache by using the 3ds it's their own fault, nintendo gave advice not to use the 3d effect too long because it uses 2 top screens and 2 top screens = 2 times the light, i never got an headache by playing with the 3d effect because i know how to stop...

Hey, Woah Woah. The Jaguar wasn't Great. But the 3DO was Way ahead of its time. Gex was amazing, and it was one of the first Consoles to include an Adult rated game, Neurodancer. The fact that they spread the resources thin, and it was challenged by the PS1 made it hard, but it really was a Great console. Also, mine still works... My PS1 however.... Not so much.

The list isn't about BAD consoles (granted most of these are bad), it's about console FAILURES... and the Dreamcast just ended up getting the short end of the stick because of the past failures that were the Sega CD, 32x, and the Saturn... again Saturn wasn't bad but come out at a time when sega put bad tastes in people's mouths with the 32x.

The Dreamcast was great! Still have mine, but it is collecting dust. It has got some seriously great games, and for its time the graphics were astonishing, particularly Shenmue 1 and 2. Gutted that game never continued :(

The Atari Jaguar should be on this list too. The first '64 bit' gaming console... which was really just two 32-bit processors running side-by-side. Pitiful graphics, limited hardware, and painfully designed controllers pretty much sealed this one's fate.

Don't agree with dreamcast in fact mine is still in use and connected to my TV. There are still amazing games out there that even today are very playable. I also own the Virtual Boy.... I feel this should be No1! Back strain, headaches & eye strain were not good

I have a virtual boy, it's worse than how he described it.
The Atari Jaguar sold horribly in my Country. My parents' company was the one distributing it throughout Melbourne, Victoria, and they can't decide whether they sold 3 copies, or 0. Doesn't help that my dad had to do all the advertising himself (They didn't even get the TV adds, not that they would have helped), with a hand painted wooden Jaguar-64 banner that is about 2 meters across. I wonder how valuable that sign would be to a collector given that it is 1. Technically official Jaguar-64 merchandise and 2. The only one of it's kind.

Another vote for the Atari Jaguar. The 2 main flaws were the expensive cartridges, and the poor quality of games available. Only Doom and Alien v Predator were any good.

Ouya.... after a massive kickstarter and a splashy debut, it pretty much died away since people weren't interested in underpowered consoles that were outdone by smartphones in terms of performance. The company has since been bought out and the Ouya brand discontinued.

Nintendo's unfathomable decision to put games on cartridge instead of CD, made the most powerful monster console of its time equal a Ferrari with a shot glass size gas tank. Worst of all, the effects of that fatal decision is still felt by Nintendo today. They never quite recovered, and no 3rd party developer will ever trust Nintendo with their biggest titles again.

I've read a lot of comments that say PS4 sucks. I don't have it but I love my PS3. Why exactly does the PS4 suck?
It isn't. all 3 consoles are good. I'm more of a PC Gamer, but I have sat down with all of them and there are lots of fun games for both. I can agree on the n64, Sure it was revolutionary, but the cartridge was the biggest face palm to ever come out of the 90s. But, to be honest I don't quite understand how the 3rd party developers won't trust nintendo with their biggest titles. I'm intrigued to hear your reasoning.

It has been that way since N64. Every month I read about upcoming multi-plat games and most of them excluded the current Nintendo console, be it N64, GC, Wii, or WiiU - unless they're kids oriented. I think Nintendo would have loved to continue the diversity of the SNES, with a variety of games that spanned all age groups. However, the N64 failed because of the choice of storage format. The low storage capacity of the cartridges lent the console to almost exclusively low detail, skimped graphics games... such as cartoony kids games... Kinda like those that Nintendo puts out most of the time.
Which.. I think, brings me to the point. 3rd party devs think Nintendo consoles are for kids and stay-at-home moms. That's how they've marketed themselves, and that started with their failure of N64, with a brief intermission with the GC, and continued full-force on the Wii. Time will tell how the WiiU turns out, but I have my suspicions.
thebbeenn Ohh, I see now. Yeah, that does make sense. I bet they might have something eventually that'll revive trust. Besides, they still might do something with some of the other abandoned/sell-out characters. Like Pac-man, or megaman possibly, considering they were brought to the new smash.

Actually comparable to today. Maybe not as a console but some headsets back in the 1990's were really cool and allowed a modern Oculous Rift-like experience, with lower quality games of course. But you could still play Doom and some other games with it. The exact names of them I forget but you can find it on SiliconClassics' channel.
For all u wii u haters that say it should've been on the list its selling more every week after mariokart 8 and super Mario 3d world, but that's nothing, wait till super smash bros comes out, it will beat the sh*t out of othe good games on ps4 and Xbox one! But ps4 is still good but not that much for the Xbox.

The Wii U has one of the most Comfortable bulky controllers ever. It's Surprisingly light, fun to play games with it, and most Importantly, the gameplay ideas can go off the charts. Imagine a multiplayer survival horror, like DayZ or something.

I’m pretty sad the Dreamcast failed, considering it was the first 6th generation console and brought so many new features it’s kinda sad that it happened. I kinda blame the 32x, Sega CD and Saturn for its failure.

True story. One year for Xmas, maybe around 94 maybe, we went to a party and one of the boys got a game system for a present. It was a Jaguar. I'd never heard of it. He was kinda disappointed cuz he wanted the Nintendo 64 I think. So They plugged it in and started playing. He liked it and seemed content. On New Years Eve we went to this same families house. I asked him how his game was. He pointed at it, shook his head, and said "I told my mom she should have stuck w Nintendo". He was around 7 yrs old at this time. He is around 28 now.....and is in prison. Makes me wonder.......

I STILL HAVE A Dreamcast and over 30 games. They are all still good,and my grandkids still play them alot. My favorite game for SDC, Resident evil Code name Veronica. It still works well,and when im not on my xbox i still play on it for time to time. It was ahead of it's time.

Atari Jaguar, Atari's last chance in the home console market, got it ass kicked by Genesis and SNES. 32X, Genesis is the greatest video game system of all time, 32X was the first nail in the coffin for Sega. I still have my Dreamcast... Great system... It's a shame it didn't last very long, it was a whole 2 generations behind the GameCube, and it's graphics were still better.
