On my last 2 trips to Disney World I carried a Passport TN as my wallet with a blank insert inside. That way it was always with me if I wanted to record a memory or sketch. In our hotel room I had my Standard size TN and supplies and I did have time to do a little writing and memory keeping but nowhere near enough to justify the amount of supplies I brought. One thing I did was make a "form" for every day of our trip the size of a 2-page spread in my TN. The form had things like "morning activities", "what we ate", "best/worst moment of the day", "funniest moment of the day", etc. I filled those out either at the end of the day or in the morning before we left our room. Those turned out to be the most useful things I brought. Later, when I did my memory keeping for real, I just stuck those forms right into my TN onto a page or as a tip in and and decorated them. Speaking of decorations, I found that I enjoyed embellishing my pages with brochures and actual ephemera from the trip rather than anything I brought, but it was fun to add some travel-themed stickers and die-cuts here and there, too. Every summer our family rents a house on a lake for a week. We have lots of time to relax on that trip so I bring a whole tote bag of TN supplies. Even then, I only use a fraction of what I bring. I really need to pare down!
Love all the tips. Keeping track of brochures and receipts is really important. Receipts mostly for the dates on them. We went to Sedona a couple of years ago for Thanksgiving and rented a house there for about five days. I brought tons of journaling stuff with me and never used it. So now I keep track of brochures and receipts and jot down in my calendar what I did each day. Then I can go back and look at my calendar and the receipts and brochures and it will jog my memory as to what I did each day and I can fill out my journal and put the brochures and pictures in. I filled out an entire travelers notebook size insert for that trip. I had collected so much stuff. :D
I love your journal style. I too always bring more than I need when I travel. I’ve been able to really figure out all I need is one pencil one pen an eraser and a small watercolor palette. I used to bring stickers and tags and stamps and all kinds of things only for them to take up space in my bag lol! If I’m visiting someone’s home then there’s room for extras because I’ll have more down time. But if I know I’ll be in a hotel it’s an “essentials only” supply kit. Thanks so much for all your tips. I never had a travelers notebook before I started watching your channel and it’s become an everyday part of my art journaling.
Lovely video! Last year we went on a three week vacation with two children aged 5 and 3. They both got a clip board with a paper pad and they shared a set of thick coloring pencils by Lamy. The older child got a set of smaller coloring pencils with a sharpener for 1€. This meant that they were entertained in restaurants, on the plane, in the mornings while everyone else is making plans. All I needed to pack then was a good pen and a journal. I also took some small blank stickers with me for corrections, making my own decorations or marking where I wanted to stick a photo in later. Also worked well for taping in napkins, cards etc.
Recently went to England and Scotland for 16 days. I challenged myself to bring the bare essentials. I had one carryon suitcase. (If I’m honest, I could have removed at least one sweater and two pairs of pants!) But that was much, much less than I usually lug along. I also brought a backpack. My friend convinced me to try it-I usually cart a purse. Never again. I fell in love w/ the backpack. I brought a 5x7 Stillman and Birn watercolor journal and a Dr. Ion small pouch with a water brush; several travel brushes; a long child’s watercolor tin filled w/ my watercolors; a sketching pencil; an eraser; a sharpener w/ an attached container for shavings; a size 05 micron and a size 01 micron; a small rag; and a card with a little washi tape. I did bring my Sprocket which I had purchased for the trip, but next time I’ll leave it home and use it when I get back.
A friend of mine went overseas with her young kids and she put a pen case and a journal in the backpacks they carried and when they were sitting waiting for meals or other things they journaled
I have been pairing down my journaling stash along with what I’ve been packing my clothes in. The watercolor tin is beautiful! I’ve actually bought a Daniel Smith watercolor sample card and cut it down to fit within my TN, so that way I have more colors to use, but I agree that only the primary colors could be very useful. I do take the reg TN, along with paper clips, for holding all the pamphlets and receipts. makes it easy to journal later and everything is in order. Thanks for sharing and can’t wait to see your pages.
If you do want to travel with a bunch of watercolor colors, check out Peerless ... they are papers loaded with color. I cut out 1.5x1.5 squares and glued them into a mini Manila folder with a piece of acetate (protection plus palette) taped between the two pages of colors. That and a water brush and you’re ready to color!
We travel to Malaysia every year for three weeks (only 46 days until this years trip-ha not counting much) and I take a regular size TN, i also take a teeny tiny black ink pad and about 5 or 6 food related acrylic stamps as they are flat, the most important thing i have found that i use is a little 6 inch plastic ruler, i also use it to mount my stamps. Our children are adults so its usually just the two of us and i get to spend about an hour each evening playing in my TN and there are now quite a few stationery/craft stores there so I buy heaps. xx
i love how real u r and ur journals r... i have a young girl too and i can totally relate. theres no time to chill at the cafe and journal and draw while relaxing with a cup of coffee, not even during normal days let alone holiday with kids...
Love your tips! Very handy, and you're right, we don't need to weigh ourselves down with a huge amount of supplies. Less is always more! For me, I love using phrase stickers or day stickers. If it can save me a few minutes from lettering 'thursday' or 'today was so fun', for example, then it's a winner!
I have been taking a big pouch of items on my road trips and I preprint my pictures. I do need to down size especially because my next trip will be on a plane. Good idea on preprepping the pages. Thanks for sharing.
On a recent trip long weekend to California, I packed too much art supplies that I didn't use. Next trip I will definitely slim it down. Thanks for sharing.
glue stick, in addition to washi sample card (s). I bring everything and the kitchen sink - but you are inspiring me to bring a lot less on my next trip [Summer 2019 - 11 days - road trip to Indianapolis, IN!] Thanks for showing your kit!
This was so good to hear as we are traveling in a few weeks and I'm realizing that I don't want to bring my full size TN as I agree that I probably won't pull it out and use it. I am bringing a passport size one with an empty notebook just in case I want to jot down some thoughts or notes. I love your channel!
Ha I just got back from a short 5day mini Vacation and I brought EVERYTHING! OMG the only thing I used was my Sprocket and a pen! Yes I ended up having to buy another suitcase just for all my goodies that I never used hahaha! EPIC Fail on my part! After watching your video I am certainly going to do and bring the bare necessities! And not 4 planners, 3pallets of watercolor, stickers, washi, 3 pouches of assorted pen/pencils/colored pencils,Tombows, and mildliners... I never got the chance to do any journalling at all after the 1st day! Lesson learned!
Oh Mitts, I’m the worst I always take three times the amount of things I need. 🤣 It’s actually a huge problem. I have a massive fear I’ll need something and won’t have it with me. Even in my handbag that I constantly carry I have extra of everything it’s a touch crazy, but that’s me, it makes me feel more secure. 🙄🤣
I have a Zip printer and extra paper packet, a battery and cord, teeny tiny tin of watercolors (artisttoolkit), permanent inks in a regular pen, fountain pen with archive black, & a dual sided brush pen (for grey or black). Pen for titels, Waterbrush, a syringe to refill the waterbrush, teeny tiny correction tape, magnetic bookmark ruler, adhesive stamp/tape roller (refillable), a binder clip or two to hold pages open in the wind, and a pair of small scissors. I may get the pen style scissors like you have, to replace mine. Everything but the electronic stuff fits in a pencil pouch. I don't do photo printing while I am out an about and I usually leave all of it in my big bag unless I am siting at a desk anyway. The only thing I take to draw with is one of the permanent black (or the black and grey pen) pens and the journal. I usually do the painting at a desk or on the bed too anyway. Napkins are everywhere so I don't need a paper towel to clean my brush off either.
compared to your Osaka trip, you really didnt bring a lot Mits! i probably would fill my delfonic pouch with a lot of stickers and washi samples, along with pens!

Simple and Minimal
Traveling with children definitely has its challenges, but I'm glad you were able to write some things down.

I prefer watercolor pencils and a brush like yours to travel. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Mits, for your inspiration! I love your selection! And the pink/brown/pencil-pen would be perfect for in your box! 🙏🏼😍😘

so nice to have ideas like this for supplies... I always bring too much... I think I will try using a little tin that way for watercolor!
I really enjoy your videos. Very informative.
I always overpack I’m trying to streamline like you 💝
Definitely bring my Hobonichi stencils& some one pack of felt pens & one pack of roller ball. 🤔 This is difficult!
