Emma, I have also dealt with terrible periods my entire life. It's so debilitating and I don't even want to know how many days I've lost to severe pain. I really hope that you can find something that will help you and that the doctor is able to diagnose or find a solution. Some things that I use that might help are lemon balm, chaste tree, and dong quai. I found these ingredients through a website called Flo that sells period gummies. Maybe you could try adding those to your vitamin regimen? I bought the ingredients separately in bulk because it was cheaper, but having it all in one vitamin would be more convenient if you don't mind the cost. I also have what is basically a small tens unit for cramps called Livia, which I don't think I could live without now. I got two as a gift and switch them out when the other one dies. I wish I had had it all throughout high school. If you look up Livia Period Device, it will pop up, I think. I hope this helps you and gives you some options. I love your channel and your book suggestions, by the way. So many things on my tbr are from you. ^_^
*emmie* if you're ever in Jacksonville FL (until sept. 2022) allow me to show you Chamblin bookmine. :D
So glad you're going to the doctor, regardless of the reason for your period pain. I found out last year that I have endometriosis (and likely adenomyosis). Although there's no cure for endo, had I known about it I might have been able to delay the rapid development of the disease, which is now a lot worse than it was. I'm 34, and have had bad pain since I was 15-16, and last year was the first time a doctor even mentioned the disease to me. It isn't normal to lay on the floor in excruciating pain whilst on your period, and yet women are told that it is. I hope you get the help you need and that you are taken seriously by your doctor.
Barnaby Rudge is my fave Dickens by the way, the descriptions of the Gordon Riots are incredibly vivid and powerfully written. And I feel like many of the characters in this are a lot more nuanced than in many of his other novels, and that the moral isn't as black and white.
I love Barnaby Rudge, too!
yes! it's taken me so long to think it mattered enough or that it was 'painful' enough to make another appointment - especially because I wasn't taken that seriously at the first one - I hope the diagnosis helps you, I'm almost certain I have endometriosis based on everything I've read about it but it'll help so much to know. sending you so much love and YES to the Barnaby thoughts
@@emmiereads periods should be slightly uncomfortable at most. Any type of pain is not okay, and I can only commend you to go see as many GPs/doctors as you need until someone takes you seriously. It’s so sad that they don’t already do this, but there will be a doctor out there waiting to help!!
That intro was like a nature special. So mesmerizing. That quiet is something else. It almost makes you feel like you're not on Earth.
hello :)
I never actually write comments on youtube, but I finally got the courage to do so here because I feel like this comunity that you created Emma is amazing and so supportive, I love reading other people thougths here.
Just wanted to let you know that your videos bring me so much comfort, motivation and inspiration. Recently I'm having a hard time but your content is helping me immensly, it calms my mind and I'm able to sort my thougths better. Also lately I'm having some problems with my brain and I appreciate you so much for sharing your experiences too, it really hepls to have someone to relate to and see how your dealing with it.
Mainly because of your channel, last year I came back to reading after a long time and I'm so happy about it, watching your vlogs makes me want to grab a book :)
So again, thank you so much, I hope you're having a wonderful day ^-^ I hope your period cramps will get less painful I know how difficult everything they can make. Sending much love
Yes I admire your courage in talking about period health and seeking medical attention - knowledge is power! I've always had terrible cramps but suddenly last year started to have mid-cycle spotting and cramps. I went to my doctor who got me transvaginal ultrasound, a polyp was found. I was then referred to a gynecologist who did a hysteroscopy and removed them. Throughout I have been recommended hormonal treatments, oral or implants, but I really don't like the effect they have on my mental health so so far I have resisted. I do wish things like this was discussed because while I have felt very safe and respected by the health professionals I have encountered thus far, I also felt like I have been navigating this entirely on my own because no one talks about it. For comparison when I had my wisdom teeth removed none of it was really unknown or new to me it's so openly discussed it's a shared experience that so many people go through I could discuss it with a complete stranger. Meanwhile I feel like I have to use coded and vague language for anything to do with period health.
I nearly leapt out of my chair when I saw Spiritfarer on the screen! Such an absolutely gorgeous game I was obseeeessed with it when I first played it! I cried while playing multiple times, it's so so so good and beautiful and poignant. Wow. As I was playing, and honestly, I wished that there was a novelization of the story of Spiritfarer, complete with the spirits and their journeys and everything. Holy cow.
watching you talk about books makes me so happy 🥺
Absolutely
Thank you so much for making this vlog; I enjoy watching it on quiet weekend days and having it on in the background while studying; your visual style and the way you edit clips together really creates a fantastic sense of narrative for the viewer - and the community that has sprung up around your channel is so incredibly wholesome (watching you respond to fan mail at your desk in this one is inspiring me to maybe reach out as well lol)
thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad! I'd love to send you back a letter :)
It's Emma's calm demeanor that keeps me hooked to her videos and the content ofc
I love your study vlogs like this. They’re always so relaxing and motivating 💜 just what I need to finish my next chapter of notes ☺️
". . . and I don't really care" is pretty much my mood in my law courses right now haha Hope the essay is going (went) well! I just turned in my first piece for my writing requirement and it was so refreshing to get back to a more English writing perspective!
I'm also loving Barnaby Rudge! I just met the executioner yesterday!
oof all the luck and love to you, that sounds gruelling - also ooh what was your piece about?
@@emmiereads I wrote about identity and memory in "On Equality as the Moral Foundation for Community" by Wilson Carey McWilliams. I loved the essay! It was very philosophical and the last paragraph gave me major To the Lighthouse vibes. I only had 500 words to explain the essay and connect it back to my own life so we'll see how I did!
Ahhh I love it when stuff I'm reading for school links up with random stuff I'm reading for fun! It happens surprisingly often, and it makes the universe feel very cozy and kismet-y. 🥰
I've been feeling so tired from school and I've tried to make myself do some work all day but seeing this video has motivated me to go do something productive, even if it isn't school related!!
Literally found a copy of the handmaids tale in an outside library this afternoon and started reading it on a bench in the park by the water while the sun was beaming down on me. It got up to 15 degrees Celsius today, spring has officially sprung here in the Netherlands.
(I didn’t just take the book, I left four of my own books there, so dw)
I've discovered you a few days ago and am already so addicted. I've been wanting to read more for years now and suddenly I'm reading tons of pages, bought books I didn't have the money for (including Letters to a young poet!), and looking forward to your reviews and recommendations...
Anyway! Thanks a lot for those cozy vids
In regards to the hot chocolate, I've always had it with just hot milk and chocolate. It just makes the hot chocolate creamier in my opinion, and also a little easier to drink right away. But there is something super special about getting specifically a Tim Hortons hot chocolate that's done with water, on a very cold day, and feeling it burn your tongue almost immediately.
yay! just what we all needed, so happy right now! as always when watching your sweet cozy vlogs. the lake is soooo magical it honestly looks like you are on another planet with is so cool, the terrain mixed with the snow! ❄️ makes me miss our white covered homes and buildings and roads LOL here in NYC I don't think we are gonna get anymore "Narnia feels" until next winter since spring is upon us. (and omg your hair is def growing I know you mentioned in a past vlog how you want it to get longer) 🥰 you got this emmie best of luck with the essays and exams! BIG EXHALE when they are all done 😊 hahaha girl good for you doing the hot chocolate with water, it's way healthier, but yeah most people I think use milk, but since you use oat milk that sounds awesome too!
yes, it felt like an icy planet somewhere far away! today was 15 degrees here so all the snow melted, I hope we get more haha - it is! thank you love
I hope you continued to feel better 🌻. Things Fall Apart was one of my favorites from school. The ending sticks with you.
ive never seen snow or felt real cold in my entire life so the intro looked like another planet. what a mood setter for the rest of the video
growing up my mom would make hot chocolate by heating up chocolate in a pan with a tíny bit of water (so it doesn't burn i guess?) and then add milk and bring it to a boil. we also had powdered hot chocolate that you mix with water, but i can't drink hot chocolate any other way than with chocolate and milk now, i've been absolutely spoiled! lovely video, as always
The frozen lake is like nothing I've seen in my life. Amazing view. As for chocolate, definitely with water, but you may glug some milk after the chocolate powder is totally dissolved in the hot water, to give a slight touch of creamy flavor.
Emmie, your vlogs are so good for my mental health. The only thing I'm genuinely looking forward to nowadays.
I grew up drinking two versions of hot chocolate: one is hot milk with cocoa powder and the other one is just letting pieces of chocolate melt into hot milk (this was a real treat growing up, and still is). Hopefully you're having a lovely day
I have endometriosis and Xulane has helped a lot with my periods! Thank you so much for talking about periods on your channel as it shouldn’t be a taboo topic!
I'm currently planting trees on a former scottish bomb factory. I was in use for more than a 100 years. The spent years clearing it of ordinance, now half of it will have a new village called Darvel and the other half will be a nature reserve.
I appreciate you being open about your experience with your period! Really happy to see the stigma around periods starting to end and that there's a lot more medical information out there. I hope you finally make your doctors appointment and hopefully find something that'll make your periods much more manageable!!
It´s so great that you talk about your period, i had some of the same problems, i got so sick every month that i had to stay home from school two days every month. I am no on p-pills and it is the biggest increase in life quality i have ever experinced.
love the ice lake footage, you're such a talented videographer! so sorry about your period pain. i don't know if you watch harmony nice, but she talked about how her period pain actually triggered her spiritual healing journey. in one of her more recent videos she mentioned how she kept ignoring her pain instead of healing through it, so she journaled about it and found that the more she paid attention to her body while it was cramping, and tried to figure out how to solve it, the more the pain would ease. i totally related because i feel like the pain just doesn't go away when i try to ignore it. i hope the doctor will help you too! also: my hot chocolate recipe lol, i microwave a cup of almond milk for about 1:30-2 minutes, add in the cocoa mix, and voila. i used to make it with water, but i realized it's so much richer with milk! also, i know this is a month late but i hope your essays went well! i just finished my master's in english about a week ago. derrida is my all time favorite philosopher :~) best wishes
I have really bad periods too! It’s always heavy and painful! Hope you’re feeling better now😊
You'r VLOGS are like the ICING ON THE CAKE. SO GOOOD....
ahh, always a delight to watch your reading and study vlogs! That intro, in particular, was so peaceful - living in a sunny, more tropical corner of Australia, I can't imagine walking on a frozen, snow-laden lake. Is there ever danger you might be stepping on unstable or thin ice? Currently, we're having lots of flooding, but your video is making me want to be productive and calm, despite all the stress around.
If the hot cocoa has powdered milk in the mix, then just add hot water. If it’s just cocoa or cacao, it’s usually put into steamed milk with sweetener but folks do also drink it with hot water depending on the region of the world.
That moment of you and Eevee on the ice was gorgeous.I hope your essay turns out to your satisfaction!Loving Barnaby Rudge!❤️
I find great comfort on your videos 🌼 thanks for being that friendly smile in this very confusing time. I genuinely appreciate you ❤️
Warm milk a sprinkle of cinnamon, chocolate bar and a splash of vanilla is how we do hit chocolate…no powder or water
Oh and whipped cream and marshmallows!!!!
i had a very bad sleep last night so i was absolutely delighted to get the notification for this video. you know how much i love you and your long vlogs, they always make life better ♡
also, i'm THRILLED you're enjoying barnaby rudge. i'm so excited to hear your thoughts ♡
You can do just water or just milk for hot chocolate, milk tends to make it taste better as it’s not watered down and it’s thicker.
Thank you so much for making these videos, I love watching them and I always feel inspired by you!
I just wanted to say something quick about your periods: in my family (I have 3 sisters) we all have pretty heavy periods with severe pain, so we have tried a fair bit and been to several doctors already. What I personally noticed is that when I am stressed they are much worse than usual, and regular sport helps a bit as well. If you have always had very severe period pain you should ask your ObGyn about endometriosis - it is difficult to diagnose but very common among women and causes heavy, very painful periods. I hope you can find a solution which lessens your pain! All the best to you!
there's something simultaneously scary and soothing about the sounds made by frozen lakes I love it :l
Definitely advocate for your own health, especially when it comes to your period. I have had similar experiences with my menstrual cycle and recently got diagnosed with PCOS. I’m finally getting treatment and don’t feel crazy anymore, not only validated but physically better too. Hope all is well❤️
my period pain used to be excruciating before i started taking birth control. i was lucky enough to get along well with the one that was prescribed to me at first, it took the pain mostly away, regularised it and actually did wonders to my skin!! i hope u are just as lucky and im happy ur deciding to get help
I have the same with my period. I can't do anything. I finally got on the pill and it's better. I can actually function. I had to skip class in college because of it. I would just stay in bed all day feeling like my insides were killing me. I wish I had gone on the pill earlier. I had run out of the pill at one point and omg it was so bad...so, I do know the difference! I wished more women would talk about it. I would have done something about it earlier too.
I make cocoa, and coffee, and tea with hot water and milk, and sweetener (optional). I have made these like that all my life Emma, so you are doing it fine. Some people prefer just hot milk, but this can be too creamy and leave a horrible taste in your mouth-depending on the milk. It's really just what you prefer! Do whatever you like, really!
I always make hot choco with water, mostly because when i was younger my mother told me that boiling milk makes it lose its nutrients. But my friends find it weird, they all use milk to make hot choco. I've also made it with almond milk(I don't drink regular milk anymore) and it tasted pretty good.
It’s really hot in my city so seeing you enjoy a view of the frozen lake is so weird! But I love your vlogs a lot, it’s fun and calms me
Yay another Emmie video - just in time for me to enjoy whilst I wash the dishes! Also the frozen lake at the beginning was so beautiful 😍
Hi Emmie!! Hope you get answers for your problems with your period. I feel your pain literally. I had an ablation done so I didn't get it anymore and it's great. I don't miss it at all. I love the footage of the lake and the dog that Evie met looked exactly like my Bobo!. I feel your stress pain too. Been going through it lately and trying to get back to reading and self care myself. Sending lots of love and hugs from one stressed lady to another. We got this girl! Much love! 🥰😘❤️💪
Love the shots of the frozen lake, so beautiful and other-worldly. Hope you are feeling a bit less stressed now.
i have always used water only as well , since i was little. And still do .
I can't believe you've never read handmaid's tale!! It's a quick-ish read and one of my all time favorites. Super intense but a necessary read I think.
I know haha I've had it for years, I'm scared I won't like it but maybe next month I'll give it a go!
@@emmiereads I read it at least once a year to be honest. I think the writing is so impeccable. I tend to start reading it again when news come out of women's rights being at risk or taken away somewhere in the states. It's just a strong reminder of where things can go and how far things have gone in history. Atwood didn't write about anything that hasn't already happened to women somewhere in history.
A frozen Cananda lake is your aesthetic. ❄️🤍❄️ Hope you’re feeling better. And your candles are so cute! 🤍🤍
I loved Barnaby - what a sweetheart he is! It's so special to have a true hero who is so clearly neurodivergent - perhaps autistic. And a pet raven - it doesn't get better than that :)
If your roommate is comfortable being on camera, it would be fun to have him show what he's reading once in a while :)
Love your vlogs, Emma, they're so joyful! It's always good to see Evie, she's adorable. Good luck in your essays and lots of love to you! 💖😍✨
Hi from Bermuda! Thought I'd comment since you mentioned the poems you are studying (which I actually studied during my English degree too). Thanks for another wonderful vlog as always :)
I am so sorry your period is so debilitating, and I appreciate you being open about it. I have struggled with really intense periods that make me sick with pain, and it’s something I’ve struggled to talk about for a long time. I have PCOS. I’ve tried so many different birth controls- combination pill, mini pill, the implant, and I’m on the ring now. It’s worked best for me and I’ve been the healthiest I’ve been in several years while on it. I hope you can find a doctor to help you find something that works for you, and that you get relief soon. Here for you!! Thank you for your content, it’s really comforting❤️
ahhhh idk even though its snowing where you're at but your videos make me feel so warm and cozy i love these sm
I was so excited to see Bunny by Mona Awad on your shelf, it's one of my all time faves!!
I did a research paper on grave robbing in Canada for a history class last year and it was a super interesting topic omg!
Thank you so much for making this vlog! I love watching them on quiet weekend days, and having them on in the background while studying. Your visual style and the way you edit clips together really creates a fantastic sense of narrative for the viewer - and the community that has sprung up around your channel is so incredibly wholesome (watching you respond to fan mail at your desk in this one is inspiring me to maybe reach out as well lol)
watching your vlogs is like being bathed in sunlight, so comforting!
I love your little highlighter sticky system. I think I need more stickies in my life 😱
Mad at youtube because I did not get notification of emma's video and i am watching it 17 HOURS LATER, ARE YOU KIDDING ME.😤
anyway love you emma
I used to have periods like this ever since I turned 19 I think. It was a very stressful time in my life and that stress must have triggered it. The only thing that helped me was getting a hormonal IUD at 22. It didn't help right away but now after almost 2 years I'm finally pain free 😩
Good luck with your appointment!
I make my hot chocolate on the stove, by heating up milk, and adding plain cocoa, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Cardamom is great with both chocolate and coffee.
Omg I’ve never seen a frozen lake before. That was magical! Glad you’re going to the doctor I was in a lot of discomfort before and wouldn’t go cause I thought if it wasn’t actual pain than I’m overacting. I’m on my way to getting better now so it’s really helped. Also, I make Milo (Australia’s version of hot chocolate) the same way you make hot chocolate. Thanks for the vids :)
Well, now you've done it! Gotten me motivated to actually continue writing on my paper. The outfit for your dinner date with friends was so cute, too. Really loved that 💜
I've been trying to get through Paradise Lost for nearly a year! As someone who isn't an English literature student, I would love to hear you talk about it so that I might understand it better and want to pick it up more often :)
Hey there again, I use water to make my hot chocolate... I have a Japanese style water boiler, I put a spoonful of cocoa (organic, no additives)in the bottom of a 16 oz Mason jar, dispense hot water, (208 F) add hazelnut milk, use an aerolatte stick to mix. 👍
LOVE the shots of the frozen lake!
The lake is so beautiful! All the lakes here are covered in 2-3ft of snow, not wind-swept like that.
perfect timing, i was just wanting something to watch while eating lunch 🍝
I really loved The Girl From the Other Side series so much! It is now complete and I would absolutely love to get a tattoo inspired by the series. 💜
My periods are the same, I just want to lay down and die during the 2 days 🥲 + I get extremely emotional PMS and my skin breaks out 😭 I’m also experiencing pain during ovulation. you’re not alone and I’ve heard it’s not okay for periods to be this way! However all gynos I’ve consulted were saying I just need to either have a child or start taking pills :/ I think it would suppress the symptoms rather than solve the problem. Still looking for a solution! Thank you for sharing this x
Have you looked into a holistic or functional GP? They are so much better with period stuff than gynos I've found! The pill or childbirth are not the only answers to all period problems, despite what they say lol! Even Chinese medicine and naturopathy really helped my sister, who used to be completely bedridden for 3-4 days a month
@@theodorapantelich2535 I haven’t even heard about them 👀 thank you, I’ll look into it and see if there are any holistic GPs where I live. Thanks so much 🌷☺️
@@katyreadsbooks1531 No worries! Hopefully they can help
@@gdaym8y hi! Actually it’s not so bad now - I started taking magnesium supplements and using painkillers two days before my period; it helped with cramps and stabilising emotions during the pms :) I still get cramps but they’re not as bad as they used to be xx hope this helps!
Hot chocolate for me has always been JUST milk. I've also had it with water but I think it tastes gross like that. Milk makes it much thicker and richer. You heat your milk in a pot on the stove so that it's just simmering (NOT boiling) and then you add your chocolate!
Love your videos, Emma! They're so wholesome and calming and you have made my otherwise sad and tired day much better. Thank you!
You may wish to try chocolate with oat milk. I guess you have instant chocolate so maybe you can mix that with cold milk but hot milk is the best. There's also a more healthy option: mix cocoa powder with 1/4 cup of milk, scald the rest of the cup and when it's hot, pour mixed cocoa into it, add some honey and stir till it's blended. Enjoy! :)
I love Winter, I love snow, I love your videos. 💗
I’ve always drank hot chocolate with milk and sometimes with whipping cream also. I just boil the milk and the cream with chocolate powder. It’s so delicious! If you have Godiva chocolates shop in Canada, try their hot chocolate. It’s amazing! :)
yess the frozen lake vlog
Hi Emma! Just wanted to let you know that you are my life mentor and you have been since i first found your channel. Now you know:-) thank you for sharing your passions and love for life. You are like a breath of fresh air through my bedroom window. Take care and I hope you will never end youtube
that is EXACTLY what i needed for today! hahahah i have a few things to do and i need a little encouragement!
thank u Emmie :)
i just had to finish things fall apart for school, and we had to study it with the motif of fate vs free will, so i thought it very interesting how the cycle of father vs son persevered throughout okonkwos life even though he tried to detach himself so completely from his own father.
i really love The Girl from the Other Side. read all the volumes and the ending is a bit confusing to be honest, but the whole series was worth the ride in my opinion. love the dark drawings, and love a certain place that you will get to see around volume 5 or 6 - not gonna spoil it, i promise haha. I also heard there's an anime adaptation coming soon and i can't wait 💙
Emmie’s vlogs are THE BEST! And I love the snippets of when she cooks too…😂
Ive always done my hot chocolate with water for kosher reasons, but I know that the proper and more fancy way is to heat milk and mix that with the cocoa
I will never have it in my heart to color highlight a book that possess so much beauty and grace. I use an F point pencil to mark or write over- which is lighter than HB so you see what I'm saying when i say i can't imagine using a color highlighter. You miss are bold. *Accept my virtual bow*
God I loved the intro it was sooo beautiful to see snow and the sun
So excited to watch this when I get the chance!! I've been so busy and a bit stressed lately and your videos just always make me feel more at peace (and make me wanna read and not stop until it is absolutely necessary) 💕✨
The chocolate redemption arc 👏 Back home ( 🇫🇷 ) only milk is standard and water is « emergency » only, it’s the equivalent of instant coffee. It does the job but it doesn’t satisfy any cravings. 😃 There’s also a few different types of powder, wether you want to drink hot or cold chocolate. The fanciest choco drinks are also made up of little rocks of chocolate that slowly melt in your liquid-vessel of choice. Happy drinks !
BGM is very good, I feel happy 😊
“A hot flash doesn’t come when you want it to” had me DEAD
please look into endometriosis, the symptoms sound very similar to what you were describing with your periods. it effects 1 in 10 women/AFAB people but it’s not talked about enough and people live in excruciating pain without even realising the cause. it’s more talked about here in Australia but I have literally never heard anyone from the US and Canada talk about it
I'm sorry you deal with mensuration. I do as well. It's not as much with pain as with an extremely heavy flow the first couple of days.
Congratulations on 250k, Emma. 🤗 💕
thank you Mae!!
good luck on your essay!! i'm a little behind in my school work and know next week is gonna busy!!
Omg that owl shaped glass/mason jar is the cutest thing I've ever seen!!! Where did you get it?
Glad to hear you're enjoying 'Barnaby Rudge.' If you're feeling stressed considering the amount of work you're putting in for the essay, then you should probably give social media a rest. Relax the mind and the body :)
In my family it was common to make hot chocolate just with milk. Over the years I switched it out to 50/50 oatmilk/water. 🤷🏽♀️
You're doing a great job Emmie!! I appreciate these videos, and you, so much. I hope your essay goes well and you have a good week at school
thank you so much Wynnie
