    Amisdt the insane amount of work I put into this video, I now recognize that I failed to include some more concrete examples of how a commonplace book can work in real life. If you're interested in a follow-up video on that, please respond to this comment!

      First of all, mad props for the cinematography and quality content of this video. Great information breakdown, cited sources, beautiful delivery, and thoroughly useful ideas, especially for the daily struggles of creatives, which can often get in the way of achieving our vision. I can see this becoming one of the great channels on RUclips; it already feels like one :) That being voiced, I'd definitely love to see concrete examples! I think this would also solidify the concept in people's minds. Practice beats theory, right? 😊 Subscribed and looking forward to your knowledge-sharing! Great stuff, Boom 🖤

    The editing in this video is beautiful. The visuals, framing, and timing is great and your script is so well planned. I have ADHD so it's difficult for me to focus in a lot of videos that may feel more like a lecture, but this was an experience. My brain was able to focus to what you were saying thanks to all the different shots. The parts with you in nature filming yourself from your bike were also very beautiful. They gave a sense of rawness and being grounded, almost coming off as impromptu, even though you were still going off a script.
    Absolutely incredible work put into this, I can't wait to see more.

I stumbled upon this video and decided to click it because i'd never heard of Commonplace books - My mind was blown that there was a name for the type of 'Everything Book" (as I have been calling it) which I had been doing! I've been keeping Commonplace books since I was a teen, without realising that they were an actual 'thing'!! Love them! So helpful, so fun. Such a great place to be yourself in. I fill mine with Childhood memories that pop into my head, passages from books/films, I made collage poetry, dreams, to do lists, scribbles, doodles, colour swatches, shopping lists, I paste in found notes, ideas, thoughts... literally everything :)

    Just my thought...
    The Bible is a compendium of various folks' commonplace journals...66 authors who wrote their thoughts ...experiences, observations and knowledge/wisdom gleaned from living in their age...
    The past merges with the present to produce the possible that's on the horizon in their vision...their prophecies are written in Logos to be voiced in Rhema...spoken word being more living and active...powerful to break down the strongholds in my mind that stop me from thinking with my own mind...reasoning through scripture with God... deducing...discerning through the process of analyzing, considering, contemplating and concluding for myself what "I think..." regarding what others say.

      It's from Leuchtturm1917: www.jetpens.com/Leuchtturm1917-Reporter-Notepad-A6-Black-Squared/pd/19210 It's meant to be used vertically for reporters but I rotated it halfway through and started using it horizontally as I found that to be more conducive to the way I write :)

    How about something like the ReMarkable 2? It’s designed to feel like real paper.

    • @boomshiddang
      @boomshiddang  8 месяцев назад +1

      While there's one research study from Norway (that I didn't get to fit into the video) that supports that writing on a digital screen is still better than typing, in my own personal experience writing on an iPad or digital tablet doesn't create the sense of "tangible permanence" that the Japanese study talks about. I've found myself with tons of files of digitally handwritten notes that I've taken that I've completely forgotten about. Once I witnessed that, I realized the true gold is in physical paper. But that's just my own experience. I know plently of people who swear by their ReMarkables. Hope that helps!

    I had watched videos about Zettelkasten. This probably popped in my feed because it was similar.
    From what I understood, a commonplace book was essentially a spellbook for ideas.

      They are very similar in principle and pretty much identical in intention! I have yet to try out Zettelkasten myself but will probably do a video on it once I am able to form my own opinions on it 🤓

    Why are we calling journals and diaries commonplace books now? Is this a rebranding?

    • @boomshiddang
      @boomshiddang  4 месяца назад

      Hey John, that's a great question and good topic for a future video. My short answer is that journals and diaries are time-based, freeform, personal, and introspective. A commonplace book is more like a structured catalog of ideas and thoughts you've collected from others as well as your own, and entries are organized into an index. It's the index that really distinguishes it from a journal/diary. Definitely not a 'rebranding' in my view as both have their proper place :) Hope that helps clarify!

    What, deep thoughts and insights are only for men?? I was enjoying this until “the man you are becoming.” Respectfully, that’s insulting.

    • @boomshiddang
      @boomshiddang  8 месяцев назад +1

      Obviously deep thinking is not the exclusive domain of men, and that's clearly not what I meant with that line. I made this video specifically for men because they made up an overwhelming majority of my audience at the time when I wrote the script, and the point you are referencing comes at the end of the Marcus Aurelius section, an historical figure who many men in particular find to be an inspiration. There is an overwhelming abundance of content on commonplace books, a lot of which is targeted to women likewise. That's another reason I wrote my script the way I did, to bring in my own male perspective and balance the scale a bit. Personally, I've watched countless hours of videos that I wasn't the intended audience for, yet still gained value from. I never took offense to the creators of said videos that they didn't take me into mind. I think you would benefit greatly from adopting a similar mindset.
