First of all, mad props for the cinematography and quality content of this video. Great information breakdown, cited sources, beautiful delivery, and thoroughly useful ideas, especially for the daily struggles of creatives, which can often get in the way of achieving our vision. The editing in this video is beautiful. The visuals, framing, and timing is great and your script is so well planned. I have ADHD so it's difficult for me to focus in a lot of videos that may feel more like a lecture, but this was an experience. My brain was able to focus to what you were saying thanks to all the different shots. The parts with you in nature filming yourself from your bike were also very beautiful. They gave a sense of rawness and being grounded, almost coming off as impromptu, even though you were still going off a script. Absolutely incredible work put into this, I can't wait to see more.

Hello, I'm a 61 yo female who really got a lot out of this video even though it was geared to men. I'm going to start a commonplace book or two for myself. TFS.
This video is soo beautifully made!! I stumbled upon this video and decided to click it because i'd never heard of Commonplace books - My mind was blown that there was a name for the type of 'Everything Book" (as I have been calling it) which I had been doing! I've been keeping Commonplace books since I was a teen, without realising that they were an actual 'thing'!! Love them! So helpful, so fun. Such a great place to be yourself in. I fill mine with Childhood memories that pop into my head, passages from books/films, I made collage poetry, dreams, to do lists, scribbles, doodles, colour swatches, shopping lists, I paste in found notes, ideas, thoughts... literally everything :) Thanks again for this fun vid! Can't wait to watch more of your work!! Have the best day!!

I've had exactly that on my mind for a few months now so thanks for chiming in, Miguel! It's super helpful to know there is indeed real-world demand for it. I've thought of doing a Good Notes-friendly version but I didn't know you could load any old PDF into Remarkable or Kindle Scribe and write into it digitally. Very well-produced video. I think you underemphasized capturing quotes in the commonplace book, though. Originally they were like a patchwork quilt of ideas.
While there's one research study from Norway (that I didn't get to fit into the video) that supports that writing on a digital screen is still better than typing, in my own personal experience writing on an iPad or digital tablet doesn't create the sense of "tangible permanence" that the Japanese study talks about. Hey Hunter! I am a bit obsessed with various pens :) Stabilo fine liners for the colored markers, Lamy fountain pens, and for the calligraphy in the chapter markers, I used a set of markers from a company called Ooly. Hope that helps!
What is the name of the song if you don't mind me asking? P.S. I also love the whole video the editing is great and the entire video is beautiful and interesting and kept me encapsulated throughout its entirety. @@boomshiddang
Hey John, that's a great question and good topic for a future video. My short answer is that journals and diaries are time-based, freeform, personal, and introspective. A commonplace book is more like a structured catalog of ideas and thoughts you've collected from others as well as your own, and entries are organized into an index. It's the index that really distinguishes it from a journal/diary. Definitely not a 'rebranding' in my view as both have their proper place :) Hope that helps clarify!
Very informative . Your notebook looks great, but I am really put off by the gilt sword, enough to pass. I hesitated to comment, but as an artist, I know that honest criticism is one of the hardest things to get. It's meant in good spirit.
I had watched videos about Zettelkasten. This probably popped in my feed because it was similar. From what I understood, a commonplace book was essentially a spellbook for ideas.
They are very similar in principle and pretty much identical in intention! I have yet to try out Zettelkasten myself but will probably do a video on it once I am able to form my own opinions on it 🤓
Obviously deep thinking is not the exclusive domain of men, and that's clearly not what I meant with that line. I made this video specifically for men because they made up an overwhelming majority of my audience at the time when I wrote the script, and the point you are referencing comes at the end of the Marcus Aurelius section, an historical figure who many men in particular find to be an inspiration. There is an overwhelming abundance of content on commonplace books, a lot of which is targeted to women likewise. That's another reason I wrote my script the way I did, to bring in my own male perspective and balance the scale a bit. Personally, I've watched countless hours of videos that I wasn't the intended audience for, yet still gained value from. I never took offense to the creators of said videos that they didn't take me into mind. I think you would benefit greatly from adopting a similar mindset.
Love the storytelling in this video, definitely had my attention from the start! I found you via Frame x Frame, love finding other creators like yourself 🙂

Wow it takes 11 times before you will even think about to lesson and 128 times reading thinking ex. Old Timmer on books and repairs...good job.
what does this even mean
What pens are you using?
Hey Hunter! I am a bit obsessed with various pens :) Stabilo fine liners for the colored markers, Lamy fountain pens, and for the calligraphy in the chapter markers, I used a set of markers from a company called Ooly. Hope that helps!
Oh my goodness, I can't wait to become a better man! ;)
LOL, or a better woman ;) !

That is a cool song indeed, it's why I picked it, and glad you enjoyed it!
What is the name of the song if you don't mind me asking? P.S. I also love the whole video the editing is great and the entire video is beautiful and interesting and kept me encapsulated throughout its entirety. @@boomshiddang
@@leeellis47 Thanks Lee! It's called "Marvel" by Ryan Taubert. An epic listen on its own in its entirety, too :)
Why are we calling journals and diaries commonplace books now? Is this a rebranding?
Hey John, that's a great question and good topic for a future video. My short answer is that journals and diaries are time-based, freeform, personal, and introspective. A commonplace book is more like a structured catalog of ideas and thoughts you've collected from others as well as your own, and entries are organized into an index. It's the index that really distinguishes it from a journal/diary. Definitely not a 'rebranding' in my view as both have their proper place :) Hope that helps clarify!
Was this an Ad?
Nope! I'm just passionate about writing things down with physical pen & paper!
6:07 wtf did you just contextualize the meaning of my life in a fucking RUclips video? You did, didn’t you?
Haha, I guess I did!
I have yet to try out Zettelkasten myself but will probably do a video on it once I am able to form my own opinions on it 🤓
Sorry but you insult me with the $50 notebook.
What, deep thoughts and insights are only for men?? I was enjoying this until “the man you are becoming.” Respectfully, that’s insulting.
Oh, awesome to connect with other FxFers, Monica! Thank you for checking out my channel!
