    • @motordragon1975
      @motordragon1975 Месяц назад +1

      I liked the structure as well since I could play the game a few missions at a time instead of needing to save manually before doing something else irl. I can’t say much else as I haven’t played the other two instalments, but something lots of people say just nags me. Perhaps you or someone else can share thoughts about it.
      But I do always see people say that you should just be able to play through the mansion as a whole, which is justified as some of the mission endings you’re taken back to the lab for seemingly no reason. For example; literally the first mission, the ending of mission 1-A has Gadd pull you out with no explanation.
      Then in others they do provide a reason yet it feels a little forced, for example the end of mission D-3 traps you in the final room with a (in)conveniently placed mound of snow.
      But there are some missions that just aren’t possible to link together for many reasons.
      Example 1: in mission C-2 and E-1, unlike the other two games, you adventure so far into the unknown without a way to return except for the pixelshiftelator.
      Example 2: every toad mission ends with a security snapshot that can only really be examined in the bunker.
      So it’s not possible to put all the missions together without major changes to the narrative and trimming out C-2 and E-1.

    Steve, the 3DS was roughly analogous to the Gamecube. Luigi's Mansion 1 was PORTED to the 3DS, it had nothing to do with power constraints! The mission structure was because it was a game on a portable system. It was a design choice based around the idea people would be playing this on their bus rides. Kid Icarus Uprising was divided into smaller chapters for the exact same reason. This isn't some big secret, its how Nintendo approached portable gaming for decades.

    When I was a kid I could never get into the original Luigi's Mansion. It was too dark (like literally the lighting was too dark) while also being a lot more open ended in how you advance. Dark Moon on the 3DS was actually the first time I enjoyed Luigi's Mansion, because the mission structure made it a lot more clear where you were supposed to go, but adding in the gems in each level gave an additional level of collectathon feeling to it (and I'm a sucker for the N64 collectathons, since I grew up with DK64). So you still got rewarded for exploration and experimenting with things that looked out of the ordinary, but your gameplay wasn't throttled because you forgot to use one of your abilities in a specific way. I was also amazed at how cinematic the game was. Luigi's characterization is so good in all of the little cutscenes, and when you compared it to Mario's 3D games, it was just a completely different flavor. And having the mission structure and constant cutscenes actually opened up more of those moments. I did eventually go back to the original on the Gamecube though, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I did the first time (partly because at that point I was much older and actually had a functioning brain).
    Looking back on it, I can understand the criticisms about how the mission structure takes away from the game by ripping you in and out of the levels constantly. But I can also appreciate the gradual changes in the levels between missions, sort of like Mario Sunshine, which is another game I grew up with.
    Luigi's Mansion 3 hit a really strong middle ground, having clear missions and objectives to follow, optional side collectibles, but also keeping the exploration open. But 2/Dark Moon I think will still always be my favorite, even though some of that is my bias towards actually liking one of the most contentious points of criticism.

    I think the multiple mansions approach is actually better than the hotel from LM3. The hotel was not coherent at all, the floors felt completely random and disconnected from each other. The multiple mansions of LM2 allowed for good variety without sacrificing consistency

    • @SuperFirstSecond
      @SuperFirstSecond 5 месяцев назад +15

      I love the idea of a haunted hotel, but after a few floors it gives up all pretense of being a hotel and is just random levels. The first 2 games have a Scooby Doo level of spooky theming, but by the time you get to the museum level, LM3 just loses any sense of mood or spookiness, and its such a huge bummer.
      I am not asking for Eternal Darkness or Amnesia here, but I'd like a future game to at least pretend it has a spooky, cohesive atmosphere.

    • @Stratilex
      @Stratilex 5 месяцев назад +6

      This. 3's attempt to correct things from 2 ultimately made it a more lackluster experience to me. The floors should have more in them, more rooms with more ghosts. The rooms themselves can be a lot smaller, and the themes should be more toned down to match the desolate feeling of 1 or the eerie abandonment of the ones in 2

    • @bretginn1419
      @bretginn1419 5 месяцев назад +9

      This is exactly what I feel. The Mansion in 1 felt like an actual haunted mansion. The places in 2 felt like various spooky locations, and had a firm identity. The hotel in 3 felt like a mix between the two games, and it took the worst aspects of both. There's no coherent identity, just a Scarescraper whose areas are far too short to be properly memorable, and goes on far too long having nothing worthwhile to show.
      Also not helping matters is how I feel they made the game easier. Luigi's Mansion has never been particularly hard, but 3 feels like I have to actively try to get hurt, or just not stunlock ghosts.

    • @Dragular
      @Dragular 5 месяцев назад +6

      That's fair, but I honestly loved the floors with distinct themes from LM3. Each floor was fun and memorable in its own way, and the ideas at play I thought were brilliant. The floors also had distinct atmospheres and managed to be pretty suspenseful, too. Honestly, I think I'd love the multiple mansions from LM2 more than LM3 if it weren't for the mission structure. I still had fun, though.

Once the remaster was announced I actually just went ahead and played it on the 3DS for the first time because it didn’t seem worth the price tag. And I am pleasantly surprised given all the negativity around the original. It is a great “play a mission or two before bed” kind of game and is brimming with the exact same kind of charm that I loved 3 for and the visuals are probably among the best on the 3DS, which is already my favorite Nintendo console of all time.

    @C_Arson 5 месяцев назад +4

    Putting aside the price point of this remaster for a second, I always felt that Luigi's Mansion 2 was a pretty darn good game. I played it before the 1st game, so I didn't have much of an attachment to that game's style or structure when I first played 2. Especially now that I've played 1, I can definitely see that the 2nd and 3rd entries have a bit of a different vibe (the ghosts' behavior in particular), but they're still quality games in their own right, and I honestly like them more because I think the level design and puzzles are more interesting (even the mission structure in 2 didn't bother me since the game was designed around it). One thing I liked about 2 (that even 3 doesn't do) is that the gold can also upgrade your vacuum in addition to improving your rank, which personally made gold a lot more rewarding to collect.
    With all that being said, it irks the crap out of me that Nintendo is charging this relatively basic remaster of a 3DS game at the same price as a new AAA release when it clearly does not have the quality and effort of a new AAA release. I'd like to recommend Luigi's Mansion 2 to people, but I know that the HD version's price point is gonna understandably turn some away, and that frustrates me (though I suppose finding a copy of the original 3DS version is also an option).

    1. In Luigi's Mansion 2, you are not stuck in either 1 hotel or 1 mansion.
    2. In Luigi's Mansion 2, you can unlock upgrades to your poltergeist 5,000 to make the game not only easier but my enjoyable.

    most likely no 2 wasnt designed like that because of memory limitations because the boo mission lets you explore the entire house, as well as the last mission in the game where most of the mansion is available, and we got luigi mansion remake years later on the same hardware, its probably just designed like that for the portable aspect

    Floors were cool and all in LM3 but still felt a little disconnected almost like they were separate levels. I’m still waiting for LM to return to one giant mansion that feels super connected almost like a stellar metroidvania.

    Only reason people dismissed Luigi's Mansion 2 was because it was on 3DS instead of the Wii U.
    I'm glad people are finally giving the game a proper chance.

    Apart from the graphics, I prefer LM2 over 3. The gameplay is far better, the level designs are more intricate and fun to explore. 3 just feels like a puzzle game, when the original game never was one. 2 has way better combat than 3, and while yes, it has many puzzles, they feel like an added bonus instead of the whole game.

    Visually 2HD is actually pretty impressive, everything seems to have been remodelled and retextured, the polygon count definitely is higher on pretty much everything and the textures are extremely clean, the lighting has also been entirely overhauled, it doesn't have the same depth as the light in 3, but it is definitely pretty and the way it bounces differently off of different surfaces like the plasticky couches or metallic objects is quite nice.
    Really, this game is suffering from the same problem something like Twilight Princess HD did, people misremembering the original and thinking it looked better than it did, and thus giving far too little credit to Tantalus for the update.

    The commentary hear reminds me of the reaction to 3D World and Skyward Sword when they were released on the Switch. A lot of the criticism they got at the time was from fans worried about the series going in a specific direction. But after Mario and Zelda got more open and exploratory entries, the uniqueness of the previous games are easier to be appreciated.

    I find it incredible that you all didn’t like this when it came out. The first one is incredibly charming, and perhaps stands alone in it’s mix of family friendly scares and lovability, but NLG’s take is funny and lovable in it’s own way, and most importantly, sees the gameplay and content evolve so far beyond the original that it’s kind of shocking.
    Glad people are changing their minds though, this is a really fun game. Currently having a great time playing it all over again.

Yes it changed up the gameplay compared to LM1 but I do think the fights, the story, the mansions and the puzzles are well though out! I'm super happy to play at this game again and I will definetly 100% it haha

    Excellent video Steve! 7:36 I was thinking this reminds me of Mario 3D World: way less appreciated when it was the only 3D Mario on a poor selling system but once you have the Switch and Odyssey plus an improved version... it allowed people to enjoy 3D World for the truly incredible game it is. I wouldn't want every 3D Mario to be like 3D World and I'm happy it exists because it's SO GOOD. And similarly though I don't want every Luigi's Mansion to be like 2, it's nice having one with a different flavor and a better ability to pick up and put down 😊

    I think Luigi's Mansion 3 is not an open exploration game like most people say, 2 and 3 are level based if you really think about it, 1 is the only one designed like a metroidvania. The thing with LM 3 is that instead of manually selecting the mission or level from a menu like in 2, you go to a themed floor in the hotel, you beat the boss, it gives you a key to the next floor, you go back to the bunker with E. Gadd, then you go to the next themed floor again to repeat the process, it's really levels disguised as an hotel you can walk through, but there's nothing to do in previous floors after you beat them for the most part.

  • @BramTheDemon

    I've loved this game since its release. While it's not as open as 1 and 3, I find the mission-based structure makes it a lot more palatable for those who may be constrained for time. I remember grabbing the original back at launch and playing a level or two before college classes would start. Also, the characters were far more expressive here than in the original. Not to rag on it though, it's still a fine game, but imo 2 and 3 had a lot more charm to their animation.

    I could never get past the ice boss on 3DS. I’ve been on the fence about this, but I think you just tipped my hand towards giving it another shot. I think I’ll leave my 3DS version where it is and start fresh on the Switch.

  •  5 месяцев назад +12

    I don't think LM2 has its mission structure due to any hardware limitations of the 3DS. Evidenced by the fact that each mansion is explorable in their entirety, if not close to their entirety, in some missions and because they ported LM1 to 3DS, which you mention in the video. The entire mansion is not held in memory the whole time, the game loads in new rooms as you go through doors or look through windows. The mission structure is instead a design decision made to make it easier to digest in a portable format. Even a relaxed playthrough puts each mission at about 10-15 minutes.
    I think Nintendo did later realize when making games like BOTW and Mario Odyssey that segmenting games don't necessarily make them more portable friendly, especially if the system can sleep. They instead pivoted to more seamlessly designed games that allow the player to jump in and out as they see fit. Probably partly why 3 wasn't designed the same way apart from feedback from fans.

    This reiterated the same topical sentiments reviewers had when it came out for the first 6 minutes... 2 tried to innovate properly where 3 was imo an uninspired twist. I guess the mission structure is too high a wall to get past??. Clearly nintendo sees 2 as a charmer, imagine youre sitting late at night next to a roaring fire in an old house which Luigi's mansion game would you want to play

    I’m a massive fan of the original and super happy that has a fresh coat of paint because, even on the 3DS, it looks beautiful and it’s great that more people can play it now. But why on earth is this full price😭😭 This has no business being $60 and I find it surprising that no one is acknowledging it

  • @juiceala

    4:42 oh I get it, when it comes to expectations "it's not a triple A experience so it's okay if it's not good" but when it comes to pricing " wdym it's not high quality? It's a full price first party title".
    I'm sorry I still think Luigi's Mansion 2 to be the weakest entry especially now when we have a better sequel available on the same system at the same price (could be cheaper if you get it used) I see no reason to get this especially when Nintendo could have either ported Luigi's Mansion 1 instead or even the arcade title over this.

    I have loved LM2 since it came out and I'm glad you have changed your mind on it! I think you can argue about the difference in vibe and style between LM1 and 2, and the structure of the games. But I think where LM2 is way better than 1 is in its much more creative level design and engaging combat design. Mansion 3 and 4 are especially well designed when it comes to layouts and puzzles. The combat feels much better in 2 (and 3). The controls are tighter and more intuitive and the new mechanics like the strobulb and charge meter add another level of strategy and complexity to the combat, which the different ghosts are all designed to play around with. My favorite fights are those where the ghosts make you decide when to pull back and when to let go in order to evade attacks. Its also always so satisfying to line up multiple ghosts with the strobulb.
    This does ultimately make 2 win out over 1 in my opinion even if I don't like the mission structure. I would like to see Luigi's Mansion 4 do multiple mansions again, but do each one in a more seamless, lock and key design as LM1. If they could take inspiration from Resident Evil 2 on that front, that would be incredible!

    I don't think the structure of Luigi's Mansion 2 has anything to do with memory limitations, that would be a big assumption. I mean, they managed to fit Luigi's Mansion 1 on 3DS.
    I believe it was just designed this way purely to be friendlier for portable play in short bursts. It is also overall easier to design and produce a game with bite sized missions.
